Limited residency spots across the country and Canada’s outdated residency matching system. It affects both Canadian and International medical graduates. Things can get better If the provinces can increase the number of residency spots.

I believe she can go to the nearest International Airport(with a CIC department) or the closest Land Border to where she lives to get it resolved. Both options seem to be the most efficient way of resolving this kind of issue from what I have heard so far.

Hello good people of naira land! Arrived in Ottawa last week, landed in 2016. Flew Royal air maroc and I'm shocked at the negative reviews I read online before I set out. Crew members were polite, plane was comfortable, didn't have the latest movies on their entertainment systems but too busy with the kids to even watch anything. Was a bit annoying that they kept seating hubby away from us but wasn't so bad ultimately. The layover at casablanca was just over 7 hours and they provided a nice lounge with free food. The only downside was the super stinky toilets! We ended up using the toilets near the cafeteria which were super clean.

Oh back in naija, Naija immigration threw out our palm oil then agriculture said it's now legally required that we pay 2k per bag for every bag containing foodstuff. We had 3 =6k. We gave them 4k.

Where was I? ... landed in montreal, RAM forgot one of our bags, filled a form, arrived the next day. We left montreal to ottawa by train, the luggage train was cancelled so we had to lug all 8 of our 23kg bags onto the train with our 3 kids - nightmare!

Okay so now in ottawa house hunting. Ottawa people what is happening with 3 bedroom rentals biko? Prices we are seeing are from $1900 to $2200 for 3 bed houses -townhouse, detached, terraced etc. Ogini? On top of that getting a place for August 1st has proved challenging so far. Many landlords say they have more than 1 application for a rental. I've checked kijiji ceaselessly, somebody, ANYBODY please help a sister on info on how to find an AFFORDABLE 3bed house in OTTAWA for AUGUST 1st.

I'm surprised this issue doesn't come up more often. From my experience, it is extremely difficult to find accomodation as a new immigrant. The best thing is to have family you canneither stay with when you arrive or to sort it out for you before you arrive. To be frank, your chances of getting a rental approval as a new immigrant in Ontario especially in the GTA are close to zero. People more established in the Country or Province are more likely to get approved over you because just like a job, there are usually tons of applications for every available rental. The price of rentals has also been increasing astronomically recently. In the 2 months I have searching, a 1 bed condo in Mississauga has increased from an average of $1650-$1750 up to $1900-$1950. Also, unlike in Nigeria when apartments or houses are listed around the time they are available, most houses here are listed as available when the current tenant has given notice which is usually about 2 months to the date the apartment actually becomes available. In my experience, all of the rental sites are jokes. About 90% of what is listed on them are unavailable. You are better off on Kijiji where Landlords or rental companies personally post. For apartment complexes, it's better to find those around where you would like to stay and call them up to ask about availability or visit them.if you are looking for a townhouse, you most likely would be dealing directly with landlords. A typical landlord would require the following.
1. Credit report
2. Proof of income(employment letters, pay stubs or bank statements)
3. References from past landlords
4. First and last months rent

In most cases, when they hear that you don't have some of the requirements because you are a new immigrant, their countenance immediately changes and its game over. If you can pay 4-6 months upfront, a few landlords may listen to you.

My suggestions would be as follows.

1.Realistically, find a short term rental and pay for a month or two( Airbnb). Now start looking for places that would be available in 1 or 2 months time.
2. Don't be choosy. As long as the area isn't sketchy and transit and shopping is closeby, the apartment may not be exactly what you are looking for but you don't have that luxury of choice at this point.
3. As stated earlier offer multiple months upfront for landlords. For apartment complexes, get a cosignor who has been here for a long time to sign the lease with you.( I have heard this may affect your ability to access credit in the future, but I'm not so sure)
4. Get an agent and explain that you are a new immigrant and let them know what you can provide of the requirements.

For those that plan on coming in the near future, if you don't have family that you plan to stay with when you land, I would advice you find a place on airbnb a few months ahead and book up to 2 months. This way, you can get a price that is only 200-400$ higher than a normal rental which isn't too bad since it's fully furnished.

This post is based on my experience in the greater Toronto area. It may be a bit different for other parts of Canada and indeed Ontario

The POF that you present with your application is funds that you are expected to come to Canada with. You are required to have funds that would cover 6 months worth of expenses in case you are unable to get a job immediately. That said, please be informed that the cost of your flight is not to be sourced from your POF. While you are to use your POF to pay for rent in Canada, you are not encouraged to pay for your rent from outside Canada. Aren't you supposed to inspect the house you want to pay for and read the lease agreement you would be signing? Given, someone can inspect the house for you, but I don't know if someone can sign a lease for you. I stand to be corrected.
Long story short, have the required POF for your family size with you whether in cash or evidenced by bank statements or cash in card when you land. You may or may not be required to show it at the port of entry.

If the landlord is willing to take you on as a tenant after you have had someone on ground inspect and engage them on your behalf, it is possible for you to sign the lease and pay rent and deposit due before you arrive. We signed our lease before we landed in Canada and even transferred utilities to our name and sorted out rental insurance from Nigeria (these were the landlord’s conditions). A lot of agreements even within the country are done via docusign.

There's a Facebook group which you can join. You can also email the head of the Nigerian Canadian association of Ottawa to get more info about the association or community. Being around the community doesn't give you a lot of benefits. But you'll run into Nigerians by default. A lot are in the Colleges/Universities, as coming as an international student, to later on getting papers is the new hustle. You'll run into a lot of professionals as well, working for the federal government or private sector. Then people who just came through the express entry route. Then of course the Nigerian embassy is located in Ottawa. So Nigerian government workers as well.

Explain your sisters situation further. Why are people still going to the U.K when they clearly don't want immigrants ? As for your original question, it's not black and white. With a lot of immigrants coming into the country yearly, the gov't has to make sure he or she meets Canadian standards. Is their degree real ? Are they on the same level as Canadian trained doctors ?, etc. You'd be surprised how many witch doctors think they should be able to practice here once they land. Furthermore, like sal said, the system is outdated and associations which represent doctors like the shortages. It gives them good negotiating powers. Don't feel bad, I know Canadian citizens who had to leave the country for good, or go do placements in the states then comeback. Many Nigerian Canadians had to go to medical school in the Caribbean islands due to lack of spots

She's still based in Nigeria. Would like emigrate to Canada, but was told about the difficulty of foreign trained doctors practicing there. Was advised that if she practiced in UK for a while, practicing in Canada would be easier. Was that advice wrong?

I don't know if that advice was wrong. I've never been in her situation nor am I a professional. But my father always taught me not to use short cuts in life, as it will always comeback to haunt you. I've also learned that nothing is guaranteed in life. How long is a while in the UK ? How much "easier" would it be practicing in Canada ? How do you even know when she's ready to come to Canada they'll be an immigration avenue for her available ? If she can migrate through EE, I'd come here, then start the process on becoming a doctor here. In the meantime my stay in Canada would count towards my inevitable citizenship. I'd also know that the program I'm doing will go towards me being a doctor in Canada eventually. I don't like what if's, or 50/50. I need to know if I do X, I'll be guaranteed to get X. If that was my sister, I'd tell her to bite the bullet, come to Canada, and do what you need to do to achieve her goals.

My situation right now is that, my agent and i had a discussion on Canadian permanent residence for my husband, daughter and i, he said he would do it for 3.5 and we started the process, after a year and half i got a call from him for biometrics, we went to Lagos for biometrics, but when the visa came out, it was mine that got approved and guess what I got? Visitor's visa. The issue now is that my husband and daughter weren't given. He promised to do it and ask my husband to come for another biometrics but He's requesting for 3.5 million for visitor's visa. I'm think in of going to Canada first and if there's a way I can legally stay in the country and bring my husband and daughter legally. This is personal decision and it depends on your outlook on life.
When I moved to Ottawa, I applied to jobs in Montreal and even had interviews there. If I had gotten any of the jobs, I would have moved. Would it have been easy, no but I would have been forced to learn French (which is good in my own opinion). I would never let a skill I can acquire stop me from reaching my goals.

Can you move to other province in the future? Yes

na wa ohh. This Canada seems tuff and expensive. Thankfully, this forum is available to those living back home to give them insight. For those chasing professional courses like medicine , I would advise to train in the country that you plan to live in. Reason being is because the country is training their graduates to work in their own system. For example, even. though Canada and U.S are similar, it would be still hard for a medical professional from the US to go over to Canada because of all of the hassles that may not even be worth it.

Thanks, wish I had seen this before I got here. It was a shocking something. Most places we applied to already had lots of applications and we kept getting doors shut in our faces. But praise the living God, on Sunday I saw a listing on Kijiji contacted the guy and saw the place. The last applicants just withdrew so we applied and signed the lease today long story short. They took 4 months rent upfront and this was much better than the person requesting 12months upfront from us! Phew! Thank God the house phase is over. Thanks good people of nairaland that tried to help. All glory to the good shepherd who leads his own in the way they should go!

Even if express entry changes along the line,your Uk training is recognised also in Australia.
She can still get her pursue her PR in Canada then wait until she qualifies for a citizen then move to Uk and get her post graduate training there.All the best to her
