I have always been worried about the security of USSD banking until I got this message from my bank.

"Send money to loved ones & friends from your FirstBank account. Dial *894*Amount*AccountNumber#. For enquiries, call FirstContact on 01-4485500. You First."

This transaction can be done by anyone that has access to my phone.

Nairalanders is their any clue on securing my account

Before a successful transaction you will be required to register your details and create a four digits pin to secure your transaction. Unless you're tricked off your pin by social engineering, i see no reason to panic as the USSD banking remains a secure gate way couple with daily transaction limitations.

sadthe guy above me though

anyway, back to post. There are two level of security in Mobile networks (in this case GSM)
1. AirInterface Security
2. Core Network Security
For the AirInterface (Radio Interface between MS and BTS) it can be encrypted or unencrypted (depend on network setting)
To cut a long story short,
You must have avoid the following for a safe and successful USSD banking: Do not reveal your PIN or BVN to a third party. Do not repeat a transaction delayed or interrupted by the network. This is because the transaction might have been processed. If you repeat such transaction your account might be debited twice. All you need do is to wait for an hour or more for a notification on such transaction.
Also, password protect your phone, use antivirus mobile app, and don't install unofficial apps(which could monitor your Keylogs in the long run)
Case closed...

Hi Nairalanders i have a question to ask before purchasing some items (Chinese Yuan)

- ¥ 1 = ₦ 52.7009 while

- 1 NGN = ₦ 0.0188342 to Chinese yuan

Now if i want to purchase an item which is
E.g ¥ 50

Will bank change it this way ¥ 1 = ₦ 52.7009 x 50

OR

Naira to yuan which is 1 NGN = 0.0188342 x 50

Thanks

At the point of confirming the transaction PIN CODE or the last 4 digits of your ATM CARD will be required.

I feel it's kindda secure.

Nothing will happened to your account (it is safe) provided u didn't save your 5-digit password u used to activate ur mobile banking in the phone. I lost my phone more than 3 time, even with first mobile banking application installed and activated. But some one with ur lost phone can recharge your line in the phone with d ussd *894*amount#. He can't recharge another number because it requires password.

if your recharging for yourself, it won't ask for your pin because your line is attached to your account. But if you want to recharge for a third party, it will definitely require your Pin.

There is no way to fully secure your account if you use ussd codes for banking. Of course there is an acceptable level of security provided by the service providers but as has been proven numerous times, criminals always device a way to bypass this security. The safest way is have an extra bank account that that is not linked with any of the banking app or ussd code services. Meanwhile try to use a unique password/pin for your banking transactions. Never use this pin/password anywhere else or on any other app or saved anywhere.
