OfficialAPCNig:nice one op, I can relate to all except that of top level position. I once saw a CV with primary sch included in it, I was like what for? She doesnt want it to be more than 2pages, yet, she includes primary sch, 2sec schs and her Uni, but excludes all voluntary works she did in sch and nysc(about 5 active volountary post/membership) I dont even take hey, xup from people on social media on first meeting. I once tried talking to an old sch mate about a professional exam, I got his contact through a mutual friend/class mate, I sent him "hello, good day, this is Sam from So so, i need you to help with this this" The guy replied later that what kind of msg is that, I cant even create a form of familiarity before proceeding to make a request. op, I think you should add these two; 1; Address, if the company isnt one having branches in almost every town of the state and there is no plan for accomodation, dont use an address far away from the company location, no company wants you to be the last to resume and first to close just because of your distance from home to work. Social Media; if you are the type that's too lousy and informal on social media, ensure your contacts(email and phone number) are not linked to your social media account. Also, avoid friends that tag you on irrelevant or obscene post, you can delete yourself from such post if tagged. btw, I'm not into HR, but I know these things. cc: OfficialAPCNig 1 Like |

We Have Our Own Season Before I complete Tell Us About Us, I would love to address this first. I know a lot of applicants don't know this but that is the truth. We have our seasons like footballers. The first quarter (Jan-March) usually see the most recruitment activities, then towards the second quarter (May-June) recruitment activities are also high but not as high as the first quarter. From July, there is usually a decline in recruitments, down to the fourth quarter which sees the least activities. But during this 4th quarter a lot of companies will be sending out openings for next year and but only few of those positions are usually filled. So if you apply early first quarter, then expect likely invite within Jan-March but if it late first quarter, then you might have to extend the expectation to 2nd quarters. But if you apply around 4th quarter, expect invite early next year and also expect to see many people at the interview venue. Any application within 3rd and early 4th quarters are usually for replacement and usually urgent and the competitions tends to be low. This is not is a most, but it mostly happens. This is a trend we noticed out of experience working in Nigeria. We just exited the 2nd quarter, so most of the vacancies now are for replacement and usually urgent. The competition is also low compared to 1st and 2nd quarters. In our organisation, we focus more on training now and preparations for annual staff appraisals. So you need to have patience. |

We Pay Attention to Address This is the 5th criteria we use in eliminating applicants: First: Spammy emails. We don't like chizzy4luv@gmail.com Second: Email Subjects. If the advert didn't specify the email subject, just use the position you are applying. Example: Senior Accountant Third: Keywords. For instance if we want ICAN certified accountants, we might programme ICAN or Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria into our software, once it couldn't locate that on your CV it would filter it out. Fourth: Age. Our software does this so well. All we need to do is put in the range of the years we want. Something like 1990 - 1995. People whose birth year doesn't fall within that range are filtered out. Fifth is Location. For certain positions, we recruit only from certain locations because of proximity. This is not for every position. But in Lagos, we don't look at location. Once you are resident in Lagos, you are good to go. We don't try that in PH or any part of other part of the country. If you want to work in PH, you must live in PH or ready to move down to PH. But our software don't filter position. Once you attend the interview, then you passed that criteria. For this criteria, applicants are given the choice that is why we don't reschedule interview on the basis of location for entry level position. If we have openings close to your location and you acknowledged our invite properly we will transfer you to that location. All we need in your acknowledgment are the position, time and venue of the interview and whether you are coming or not. If you are not, then why. Something like: Good day Mr OfficialAPCNig This is to acknowledge the receipt of your mail inviting me to an interview on xx/xx/2018 for the position of a Bleep at 18 Bleep, Lagos. I regret to announce that I would not be available for the said interview because I am currently resident in Abuja and I would appreciate if you kindly reschedule to a new date and time convenient to you. I am looking forward to your co-operation. Best regards, Lekan Idris Company policy, we don't reschedule on the basis of location for entry position, but our company offers us certain level of discretion for intelligent applicants. So we will definitely transfer him to Abuja, but if we don't have opening there, he would be places in our Replacement List. It will not take us more than the next first quarter (Jan-March) to offer him a new position and it is automatic, no interview just briefing and few trainings all expenses on us. Yes. We are that good. We reward passionately intelligent people. 5 Likes |

OfficialAPCNig:Oga, leave dat side. 'Poaching' or 'head-hunting,' is something that still boils down to the employee's choice. And we do not prefer poaching, so please stop such insinuations. I am only telling you what happens in different places, and nobody can pretend it does not exist, unless you want to play the ostrich. You need to talk to top HR people who have conducted extensive recruitment for C-level staff, to hear their experiences. As an employer, treat your employees well, and very few people will succeed in poaching them. No employer can make an employee work for him for life, regardless of how much such an employer spends on training that employee. The best you can do, is to ask the employee to sign an employment contract with certain terms and conditions, as well as penalties that may be invoked, if there is a breach. Every contract has a term/period of validity. And there is no contract that cannot be re-negotiated. If an employee signs on for 5 years, are you saying he or she cannot live after the tenure is over? In some cases, an employee can even choose to pay off his employers with a month's salary in lieu of notice. If he does so, are you still going to force him to stay? I have not asked you to share any confidential information, neither will I ask you to do so. I am only citing examples of what goes on within the industry and the organised private sector. |
Re: Interview Etiquette 101: My Personal Experience As A Recruiter by LaudableXX: 3:50pm On Aug 01, 2018 |
OfficialAPCNig:I always choose my words carefully. From the little you wrote here, I can see that you are just brimming with youthful exuberance. I have twice your years of work experience, so I will let it slide. Humility is a great asset. Do not boast about your portfolio, until you have seen what others have. OfficialAPCNig:It depends on the organisation. In some firms, HR recruitment is seen as a tedious mundane process, so they would rather outsource it, probably because they do not have the required staff strength to handle it, or because they would rather focus on other areas in-house, such as talent development, compensation plans, medicare supervision, corporate succession plans, governance etc. In other firms, they would like to avoid a conflict of interest, on the part of their internal HR staff. In some global organisations, the recruitment process is actually domiciled internally, with each dept conducting its own recruitment in joint partnership, with internal HR. There are different structures in different organisations. With regards to training, no organisation has all the tools or in-house experts, to train all of its staff. So yes, this aspect can be outsourced due to the nature of the training requirements, or due to the demands of the workforce, for a specialised kind of training experience, or even due to certain job requirements where a demand for a specific kind of training is used to equip the staff, for a particular project. |

LaudableXX: Dude, you have never been a recruiter, there are other things people look for when they seek for the best people to occupy certain roles, its not just qualifications but also attention to details and such silly things like daft email addresses. You think its easy to read through 17,892 CV's? Whoever wants the the job needs to be better and sensible. |

OfficialAPCNig and LaudableXX , We are following. The two of you men dont want to bow for one. These are two HR professionals. Mr. OfficialAPCNig agrees Mr. LaubableXX has some valid points. At least, you have seen he is a professional too with many years of experience. Also, we learn from one another or each other. No man is an island. It is where someone knows reach that is where someone else starts from. The qualifications someone has is not nothing to someone else. This is how one Professor who has gone to germany and other countries humble one PIT guy who was bragging here. Lastly, President Buhari doesn't have all these qualifications yet he is the President of Nigeria. 2 Likes |

elwhizzy: I agree that there are many different things that people look at, during the screening process, when hiring people. So why add a petty thing like e-mail address, into the mix? Why not focus on the more important criteria? There are various HR softwares, for sifting through tons of CVs. If your own HR function is not automated enough to do so, then kindly get someone to install it for you, instead of using petty issues, to disqualify people. (sigh!) The way you people make noise about e-mail addresses ehn, it appears someone has paid you huge money, to do so. Guy, paying attention to details, has very little to do with your choice of an e-mail address. Unless a recruiter, has spelt it out previously right inside his job advert, that your e-mail address must be structured in a certain way in order to get to him, then he should not make your e-mail address, a criteria for hiring you! Are you hiring e-mail addresses or hiring people, like someone asked earlier? The best ITC software specialist I ever hired, had an e-mail address titled 'excalibur@drx.com.' If I had disqualified him based on his e-mail address way back then, I would have missed out on a great hire with a sharp mind, and a superior ability to execute complex projects, in a timely manner. |

EdoBoy90:Boss, believe me it would be too risky for any of us to give out any info that would be tied back to us. We will be filling some position for some oil servicing companies in SS in the first quarter, if I am assigned that task, I would create a thread and mention you. I will tell you how to make your CV get personally to me. I will only do this for you and the first guy I told. Once you guys pass the preliminary test, then we might work out something. I would do all these without you knowing me personally. LaudableXX can you help explain more why we are protecting our identity? |

Re: Interview Etiquette 101: My Personal Experience As A Recruiter by OfficialAPCNig: 9:09am On Aug 02, 2018 |
LaudableXX:There are different procedures for filling each position. Techy positions are specialized one and we don't expect to receive more than 30 openings from them and we don't run specialized positions through software. Elimination is manual. We know techy people are weird humans and we allow them that discretion. They have different procedures. A techy person can attend our interview on jeans, it won't affect his chances, but we automatically disqualify anybody on that who applied for administrative positions. We expect all our staffs to be on corporate unless on Fridays, but techy guys are exempted provided it is not native wear. But when you are dealing with generic position and people applied in thousands, we automate the entire process to prune down the applicants and email addresses are first hit. One thing we have learnt over the years is that Nigerian youths are damn good. If we reject Mr A, believe me there is a better Mr B waiting for that opportunity. My advice still is, Nigerian youths should use professional emails. |
Re: Interview Etiquette 101: My Personal Experience As A Recruiter by OfficialAPCNig: 9:59am On Aug 02, 2018 |
Tell Me About Yourself This is the point I hire my guys. Every other questions I would ask is to verify what you said here. My name is Lekan Idris, I am a graduate of Accountancy, I am a team player, I have the ability to complete tasks within deadlines and bla bla bla This is bullshit. The only thing that is verifiable in what you just said are your name and course of study. If you can make the recruiters go through your CV again while telling them who you are then you are hitting it raw. Everything you say here must be something tangible and verifiable. Tell us who you are, Just your Surname or First name would do, your qualifications including courses and certifications relevant to that position, your skills, experiences and what you would be bringing to the table. Find a way to put figures or statistics especially in percentage into what you just said. If you don't know any, please refer back to what you did during your service year and found way to extract a data from that. My name is Lekan, I graduated from Economics near on top of my class. I served in xxxxx, Zaria and was promoted to Senior Economics Teacher within 3 months. During the period I held that position our WAEC credit level in Economic grew by 31% and the school issued me a letter of commendation in that respect. Though I have not worked professionally before, but I have experience working in this position, first as an Intern at xxxx and secondly, as a Corp Member serving our dear nation. I am professionally certified in xxxx, xxxx and xxxx and I have knowledge doing xxxx (your skills now). I am a team player and I have ability to work with minimal supervision. Now tell us what you are bringing to the table. It should be quantifiable. You can easily deduce that from the percentage you gave above. If you are able to hold this conversation flawlessly, believe me you are good to go. Don't make it too short and too long. Moderation is the key. Before going to the interview please master this very well. Good Recruiters like me would definitely cut you before you finish pouring out that, so also prepare for that. Don't say anything you can't defend. If the Recruiter asks for a proof and you don't have it. Tell him you would email it to him. Whenever there is tension in the room, douse it by smiling. It helps a lot. If it is your first interview and you think you are nervous, tell the Recruiters with smiles I am feeling nervous. I just pray I won't disappoint. Oga, if you think you can't pull that through, don't try it. Cc: Akeusola93 5 Likes |

akeusola93:Believe me B. Agric (4.11) and B.SC (Accounting) are not the same. B.Sc Accounting are specifically trained to do that, the same way you would best an Accountant who appplied for an Agric opening. Since you know you have this passion, you should have done a professional course in Accountancy. ICAN is expensive but Tax accounting or Cost accounting are not that expensive. You said you are good, but how updated are you on industrial best practices, which accounting standard is Nigeria using? It will be difficult to convince a Recruiter that a B.Agric knows all these. 4.11 CGPA is something we rarely see. But have you been invited to an interview before? |
Re: Interview Etiquette 101: My Personal Experience As A Recruiter by OfficialAPCNig: 10:28am On Aug 02, 2018 |
sexiestharam:I am honoured, I wish you luck. 5 years experience? Ok do these: 1. Try using email signature 2. At this point you should have a professional profile on Linkedin, include it on your CV. 3. Try changing your CV format and try this font Verdana 11, on it. It is catchy to the eyes. 4. Change your professional summary to be tailored to that particular position you are applying. 5. Install Streak on your gmail to track when your CV is viewed. It is free. 6. Under each working experience, instead of specifying your roles, specify what you achieved under those roles. 7. Try changing the wording of your cover letter. 8. Try applying few days to the end of that opening instead of applying first. This won't work for us because we use a software to aggregate all our CVs, but for some organisations it would. 9. Make sure the companies you are applying for can handle your expected salary. Don't just apply. Good luck again. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Track Your Application Every time you send 3 CVs and didn't get even 1 invite please tweak your CV. Most people don't get invite not because they are not good, but because the CVs were not opened. So you have to track every CV you sent. Just install Streak and set it to automatically track sent emails. If you send a CV and it was not opened 24 hours to the end of the opening, please send another one immediately. But for recruitment agency you don't need to track your CV. They would acknowledge receipt within 5 minutes. If you didn't see yours resend CV few days later. If your CV was opened, always check your Spam folders any time you checked your inbox. When you are invited, don't forget to acknowledge pls. We acknowledged receipt of your CV so we expect you to acknowledge our invites also. 1 Like |
