dsuperhero001: Uniport...... There are factors that determine how fast you go, not necessarily the sch. Factors such as the speed of the student & colleagues in the dept and the dept itself. Economics dept in Uniport will run with you if you are running and walk with you if you are walking. But dept like accounting, management and pol sci are quite slow to me. I also saw someone in geophysics who is graduating 8years after. Its necessary to get information on the dept you intend applying to so you can make valid decision. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

dsuperhero001: Thank you and it’s a nice move to start your PhD. If you go back few pages, you will find where I had explained how and where to publish your research out put and also how to search for emerging research topics. Searching for topics; you or anybody can do that directly. First, do you have any research area that interests you? Any challenges or issues around you, your country or global that you wish a solution can be created? Do you think some problems or specific stuffs are underrepresented or may lead to bigger issues if not treated or not propagated? PhD is about providing a solution to an issue via research. After lots brainstorming and you can use academics search engine (I have listed them few pages backward) as aid, then come up with atleast 5-10 research topics. Show it to senior colleagues, you can write it here or weigh friend. Then people will assist you in refining the work to suit your interests. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Nice thread.very informative. B.sc human physiology Pgd education M.sc educationsl administration In fact the thread has made me consider going for Phd Pls sir, what areas do u suggest. Could u pls shed more light on articles, citations and publications.are they pre requisite for the completion of a phd program How many of such publications must one write and submit to be legible for the award of a pHD degree Are there scholarships, grants. That are readily available locally. Or international sponsors Tnanks |

Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 10:25am On Aug 12, 2018 |
candygirl4real: Quite impressive and you can go for your PhD, we need more women holding an academic doctorate and conducting research. You have also asked very good questions regarding articles, citations and Publications. Could u pls shed more light on articles, citations and publications.are they pre requisite for the completion of a phd program In international contest: PhD is designed for research to find solutions to global and national issues, to advance known facts, to challenge known theories or develop new things based on extensive and significant original research in any chosen field. Articles publication in Reputable journals/books: In many developed Western and Asian Countries, quality and reputable publications are required to graduate from a PhD program. For instance, it is a Must in Universities in Cyprus, America, Sweden, Finland and many other European countries and now China is making it a must. I believe is also compulsory for some universities in Africa as well. So for instance, in Cyprus, to graduate a PhD the student must publish a minimum of one SCI/SSCI (Science citation index or social science citation index) articles as a graduation requirement. So imagine, if the university graduate 100 PhD per year means they will have 100 reputable articles under the university name, hence, increases their ranking and reputation. To get jobs in many western countries, the name of your university or country you graduate from contribute not as much as your numbers of reputable publications, citations and quality and contents of your publication. In the majority of the advertisement for a job, it is often stated that candidates should have a demonstrated track record of technical, academic (excellence, or promise of excellence, in teaching and scholarly research)....So you can only proof scholarly research through publications, citations, projects and supervision. See the attached job offer from Namibia University, the box section indicates that the need at least 20 publications before they can consider the application for evaluation. Citations: The reason for citations is to credit the author and publisher for their original work and to enable your readers to consult the same sources. However, in the modern 'publish or perish’ academic environment, citations have become a form of currency traded between researchers; as a proxy of research quality or impact, citation counts and related metrics are increasingly used in funding, promotion and tenure reviews and in national research assessment exercises. Grants: I have mentioned in the previous pages on the same thread, how grants can be accessed and what the funding agency look for to provide a grant. You may search for that. In brief, there is a bunch of advertised sponsored PhD program abroad, however, applicants will need to meet their requirements and compete with thousands of other applicants. Hence, your CV should be highly competitive with unique and emerging skill-sets, scholarly activities. Locally, I don't know about much of the grants in your local context. Please consider checking researchgate, Nature, Mendeley websites etc for PhD grants and advertised sponsored positions. If you have any concerns regarding your PhD research and support, please dont hesitate to come to this thread to gain and share with others. Best wishes! 2 Likes 2 Shares

bilal4riid: That is nice but I have some concerns. What is overlime? I have not heard that before. Will you be isolating the S. Cerevisiae yourself or you will be using cultured strains? If you will be isolating, it will be from which fruits? Also, which nucleotides? In one of my researches, I had isolated 3 different S. cerevisiae nucleotides, however, we found that Candida tropicalis F0-5 exhibited rapid catalytic activity compared to the commonly used C8-5 . Also, you said unifactorial. I have used so many DOE but I have not heard unifactorial before. Or do you mean factorial designs such as fractional, simple or full factoria? if is factorial design, then why? Factorial Designs (FD) Factorial designs are very good, however, have some disadvantages. If you have more than two factors it is impossible to study the curvature effects w.r.t to factorial design........you have to consider quadratic or higher order regression models. Also, in FD no degrees of freedom are available to estimate the error sum of squares and hence, the obtained model coefficients cannot be statistically tested for significance. Hence, to obtain deeper insights into the effect of each independent factor on the response, it is necessary to use a DOE with complex nomenclature design (Central composite designs, dohelert, box-benhken etc). Unless you just looking at the main effect and significance of each factor. 1 Like 1 Share |

Chynwe: I would encourage you try North America if you are thinking of studying abroad. The basic things you would need is a good GRE score, good undergraduate/masters GPA, and good references. In order to sell yourself, I would suggest you first find out your research interest, look for professors in that field, read their papers and related papers, find where you want to lend your voice in research, and then approach your professor of interest. What this does for you is to present you as a good potential student and also, would guide your statement of purpose. I wish you great success in your exploit. 3 Likes 1 Share |

mymzo48: Following what wip7 suggested, I would also suggest you define what in Quantitative Economics you want to do. Is it at a Micro (more like big data analysis) or a macro level (like stochastic process, time series) that you want to specialize in. This will help guide how you approach your objective and spell out your career perspective properly. 3 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by GboyegaD(m): 6:58am On Aug 14, 2018 |
Dawudski: I know this is very possible in the US however, from my experience, a Masters in Economics in the US would do you more good if you are considering a PhD in Economics in North America. The reason is that the Nigerian curriculum do not include enough Mathematics needed to excel in coursework for a PhD in Economics in North America thus, a Masters would help you bridge the gap. During that time, you may choose to also audit undergraduate Mathematics classes in Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Numerical Methods in the least. I wish you the best in your future pursuit. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

wip7:I'm grateful sir for the time you have taken for enlightenment. Im not used to DOE to some extent, but with my intention and the information you have given i would like to consider CCB {Central composite design}, I look forward to it. I used to Unifactorial Method which is manual, where one factor is varied keeping others constant. I will be using cultured strains sir. Glad to know that Candida tropicalis F0-5 exhibites rapid catalytic activity. "Overliming" I refer to the use of Ca(HO)2 for the detoxification. Thanks 2 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 1:20pm On Aug 14, 2018 |
bilal4riid: Oh I thought as much that you may be using Calcium hydroxide. Its good! The manual DOE is time-consuming and you may also waste some of your precursors. The CCD is nice as you can fit as much as 8 independent factors and have even up to 5 responses. Also, the flexibility of the software matters. If you are not good with MATLAB, I will suggest you use either Quantum XL or SigmaXL. The Quantum XL allows you to define independent parameters that are not numerical but qualitative in nature and quite easy to extract the results with an explanation. Best wishes and if you need further help dont hesitate to post here. 3 Likes 2 Shares |
