I feel happy to see my 2 years+ agm battery bank always at uniformed volt whilst charging and discharging . How do I know if batteries are of equal volt without day to day use of DC multimeters which can be stressful pending on battery rack type/design , thats the question most clients will ask me as am not really a fan of WiFi monitoring(which dosnt even entail individual batteries) neither do I really have extra time for that . I simply integrated a DC meter board to my system for easy individual battery monitoring purpose and its been doing its job i must say. This die-hard dc volt displays works 24hrs and don't fail easily . It gives one rest of mind and anybody in the house"even Madam or Ekaete" can easily view through what's happening amidst your inverter batteries .. The snapshot reading below displays uniformed volt whilst running an AC unit by past 12 midnite and sunny day whilst solar charging ! Who still doubt's if solar really works ? Feel free to reach me via number in my profile/signature.. Cheer's 3 Likes

CC_Zeestone99 I recently came across an online scammer using your install pics to make money. He claimed the pics because it wasn't encrypted /watermarked ! He replied me with all confidence that he did the installation at Delta state and when I went ahead to tell him that I know the exact setup location which I was physically present as at then, and even the USA trojan battery supplier, he was dismayed at the truth & blocked me ! Good I have few snapshots so most installers will learn how to work on their displayed pictures as others might be real busy making money with them 3 Likes

Long Batteries. As most of you know I have been installing 6V flooded batteries exclusively since 2014. We started with the Trojans and when we could not get them we started to use the US Batteries. The Trojans beat the US Batteries hands down in my opinion. We will revisit this later. December last year we installed 4 Long 200AH batteries for a client whom we sold Lithium batteries while waiting for them to arrive. They were installed with a Growatt SP5000 running an older version of firmware. The firmware limited charge voltage to 54 and allowed for a discharge to 42V. Two weeks ago we removed the batteries and I have been using them at my installation and WOOOOOOOOW. I run my freezer lights and fans through the night and wake up to between 49.3 and 50 V. The lowest we experienced was 48.4 V the first night it was installed. We watch TV at night run the refrigerator till 7pm and freezer 24/7. Today on a very cloudy day I pumped water while my fridge and freezer where on and the lowest voltage I saw was 50.4 V. I was pulling 1300 watts out and putting in between 600 and 800 watts as the conditions varied. I have ironed in the morning and not triggered a low voltage alarm. For a battery that endured 7 months of poor charging and discharge to still perform as well as this does today, I doff my hat to LONG. Well done. Bravo on a well built battery. They weigh a ton though. 6 Likes |

I will kickstart this since no one has commented so far. I have used US Battery personally and for clients - everything goes well in year one, with very little watering or maintenance required. Then all of a sudden the batteries (one or two in the bank) start to run hot and drop voltage and everything goes downhill from there despite all measures taken to fix - this typically happens about one and a half years into usage. The reference case is the L16 range For Trojans, it has been a mixed bag, they also suffer sudden failure which I can only explain as a bad batch being brought into Nigeria and foisted on us. Securing a warranty replacement from the source is nearly impossible at least in my own experience since the replacements were out of stock and stayed that way for a very long time. I have also read the sub par experiences of Ogas Chris, Saipro, Abunafiu on this forum as they experienced issues with their Trojans and made valiant efforts to revive them - hopefully they will chime in with their experiences. It is interesting that Trojans are priced at a premium relative to US Batteries in the US but here in Naija the prices are about the same no thanks to our local sellers. Much to my surprise, a similar FLA battery (Luminous) has performed pretty stellar when I used them as replacements for the failed Trojans and USBs - these have suffered some serious abuse yet continue to perform wonderfully - I am waiting for the 3 year mark to pass before I conclude on their longevity and ruggedness in service. NiyiOmoIyunade:We have a US 2000 that exploded at one of our customer installations. The getting hot and failing is so common with the US Battery. A more than 25% failure rate. I have yet to have any issues with the Trojan L16 and I have a few that have been abused. I will not recommend US Battery. The factory gives you some BS and blame the user. I told them that real life experience trumps whatever they can replicate in the lab.

Growatt: In December 2018 we took delivery of three Growatt Inverters and we did videos on them and at the time based on promises that had been made recommended them for purchase. The firmware version that we originally had was outdated. The new version we got was still not adequate. The Max battery cut off was 44 Volts and the Max battery charge voltage was 57.4. Needless to say we destroyed our lead acid batteries, because they never got to the maximum voltage needed to charge them. (Remember the LONG batteries they were also used on the Growatt we installed for a client). I was forced to use external charge controllers to try and charge my batteries. Early this week I wrote Growatt an email voicing my displeasure at promised firmware update that was not met and my next video will unrecommend them. They promised an update by weekend and this morning they did an update over the air. The max battery cut off is now 60 V. The bulk and absorb can go from 48 - 59V and the low battery cut off can be set up from 40 - 50 V. Enjoy your Growatt. They are quiet and a work horse. I have run a 2 hp water pump, refrigerator, freezer, fans and lights all at the same time with nary a whimper from the unit.

Please what is the delivered cost (to my Lagos abode) for a 5kw 48v Growatt unit? I would be glad to try any inverter that Oga Chris would recommend. Similarly, I have also been looking for a an Axpert type inverter without inbuilt solar - I am hoping to the price point on this will be friendly and I can give the brand a try again after my original dissappointing experiences. Any pointers please? chris81964: |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Continued with my trouble shooting, realized i made an error in the initial measurements. solar input wasnt disconnected. so i now disconnected solar input, 3 batterys appeared in sync @ 11.78v, 11.81v, 11.80v and the one am suspecting at 12.23v. why am suspecting the one with high voltage is that i hv seen similar stuff before with rechargeable radio , generator and car batteries. they would be reading normal voltage, but will not be able to carry any load. may read 12.6v without load, but when loaded will quickly drop to 10.3v or so. wish i had a handheld load tester, that would enable me test the batterys without having to disconnect each one. am all ears if sopmeone has a smarter n easier way of resolving checking this EDIT: Continued trouble shooting, with the 5kva inverter hooked up, load on 12% solar charging off, 3 batteries read 11.67v, 11.60v, and 11.61v, 4th one 12.23v. now turned off the inverter, and the 3 batts with low voltage now sprang to 12.40v range, while the single batt reading 12.23v, moved up to 12.30v, seems my initial theory was wrong, and its the 3 batts that have more problem, not the single batt as i suspected |

NiyiOmoIyunade: I have some theories why Trojan batteries sold in Nigeria often times don't live up to expectation especially when compared to performances from Indian Tubular batteries. 1 - Most of those batteries are poorly maintained in store. Flooded acid battery is very sensitive especially when kept in store. Due to it's high rate of self discharged. Because this fla are kept in storage for a long time, they lose lots of charge and suffer from surlphation due to long time in state of discharge. 2 - Most FLA are shipped dry without electrolyte to reduce cost of shipping and then filled with electrolyte once in Nigeria. The quality of electrolyte added to them in Nigeria is suspect. Often times the electrolyte do not confirm with the right manufacturer recommended gravity and this will in turn affect the performance of the batteries in their service life 3 - Tubular batteries are actually built for the indian market. They are designed to work in a tropical environement, withstand high discharge and above. My Mercury tubular battery procured sometimes in 2015 is still going strong without showing any sign aging, The good performance from the mercury has created a problem for me where I am unable to expand my storage capacity.. I can not mix new and old batteries and economics will not allow me to sideline the old one since they are still waxing strong. In all 3 years of having the batteries I have not experience them getting hot even when equalising at close to 16v per battery they stay mildly warm at most. |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Thanks for replying, and sorry I looked away too long. My Ritar RA12-105F's allow for 14.4-15V Absorb/Equalization and 13.6-13.8V Float, respectively, at 25°C +-5°C. (Snapshot attached.) About an hour ago, the ETEKCITY read 29.3°C on the body of the battery bank where it's usually most warm. (Snapshot attached.) The ambient (the floor around the area,) was at 27.5°C. Although my system is indoor, it's positioned such that there's a stream of outside air/breeze in from one side of the house, over the installation, and out an [almost] opposite side. I think my batteries are hardly warm to the touch chiefly for that reason. Eventually, I'll have to have a way of calibrating the ETEKCITY, or get a more high-end probe when the come comes to become. (Apologies K. O. Mbadiwe. ) ........ P34c3 ..... ...
