I am in need of anyone in the business administration field interested in writing research papers with me, my interest is in climate change.

Climate change in Business Administration??

Is that a new area in Business Administration? I really will want to know about it

OK...But corporate sustainability goes far beyond climate change (uni-dimensional proxy of external environment)...I guess you intend to do an exploratory research if that's the case I look forward to read the research and tap from your wealth of knowledge.

Hello all,
I'm glad to have stumbled into a thread like this, quite frankly if I had engaged in this thread earlier this year, who knows I would've been on a scholarship.
I'm a civil engineer with MSC in Environmental Engineering & Project management.
I'm not into academics, but I work in d oil and gas sector. I've been trying to get a research topic for a PhD that solves a problem in my job area.
"PURIFICATION OF CRUDE OIL CONTAMINATED UNDERGROUND WATER USING NANO MATERIALS"
This is my proposed topic, but here are my challenges:
- it's more of chemistry than it is environmental engineering
- I have seen some companies use zero nano valent irons, in that area but I need to use a different nano material
- I haven't seen much literature on this topic.
- even to prepare a proposal has been an issue for me coz of scarcity of materials

Pls I need ideas on how to approach this topic and a proposal that is worthy.

Thanks

Actually, my focus is on a smaller unit, I just gave you a broader view. My dear a lot of businesses would fold up because of the upsurge of climate change, if measures are not taken to adapt and mitigate its effect. I could give you examples of such if you so desire but I won't. Just keep your fingers crossed until I send you my research findings.

This is a lovely thread!

Dear wip7, many thanks for your kind contribution and assistance.

Well, I'm a prospective MPhil student at the University of Cape Town (as I have been offered a firm offer to study there come 2019).

However, I'm in dire need of fundings (both for research et al).

Prof wip7 and other scholars, can you kindly suggest any funding organization(s) I can apply to for support?

For your information, I just finished my national service (NYSC) last month (July, 2018).

My research interests are nested in Plant-insect interactions and conservation biology.

Currently, I have 3 Co-authored publications, 2 currently under review, and 8 published articles in the book of proceedings of several conferences hosted by the Nigerian Young Academy/Nigerian Academy of Science and the Entomological Society of Nigeria.

Please Prof wip7 (and others), kindly advise me accordingly.

Regards.

Kindly read many pages back, I have explained how to search for grants, I have provided links, sites and where to search. Follow all the tips, links and directives given.

In particular, I have mentioned among many outlets to check for funding is TWAS.

TWAS:
TWAS funds several programmes that provide grants to researchers in some developing countries for specialized equipment, consumable supplies and Master of Science students. Grants are awarded to individual scientists and research groups.

ARIPD:
serves as a focal point for academicians, professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and associates pursuing research throughout the world. You can check their website for various worldwide grants.

Your case is quite simple. However, I can perceive you lack research skills and experience, cos irrespective of the field you can find the info. But dont worry, this thread is opened to support you. To succeed in this project and my write-ups you must be ready to learn and take some research. Let go.

PURIFICATION OF CRUDE OIL CONTAMINATED UNDERGROUND WATER USING NANOMATERIALS

The first thing you need to do is, you need to do an academic search. Read some of the pages in some of my write-up you will find where I stated how to find academic stuffs and links to use. Google will help you but an academic search will be more specific.

1. Look for Nanomaterial (NM), what it is, their make-up, brief synthesis (preparation) of the NM, why are they important, their physico-chemical properties that makes them unique and general use.

2. Search for published work on CRUDE OIL CONTAMINATED UNDERGROUND WATER. Know the mechanism how this contamination occur, the character of underground water, environmental and ecotoxicology impact of crude oil contaminants.

3. Search for various treatment of crude oil water contamination. Specific focus should be directed towards the published paper on physical treatment (adsorption, filtration, membrane separation, desalination), biological methods (bioremediation, biodegradation and biodetoxification), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and hybrid treatment technique. I will include one paper here for you then try to find more.

4. Understand basic chemistry, all environmental engineering has standard chemistry and chemical engineering principles and courses.

This is my proposed topic, but here are my challenges:
- it's more of chemistry than it is environmental engineering
Unless you did not do many related courses during your MSC. Where I teach, at master level, we have environmental chemistry, analytical and separation chemistry for all our environmental engineering and science student. So do more reading, the major chemistry in that is the preparation of the material you will need and the characterization of the prepared material.

- I have seen some companies use zero nano valent irons, in that area but I need to use a different nanomaterial

There are over 1 billion nanomaterials that you can synthesize. Not that difficult. Here, I will post you my recent papers, you can see the fabrication process. Read published papers.
You can use my recent nanomaterial (CoO/CuFe2O4) look for this paper online and see how Io prepared that nanomaterial. is very easy and have commercial application in various environmental settings. See this page (https://www.nairaland.com/2044554/thread-phd-students/45)

MOFs: Metal organic frameworks is quite impressive, very unique and have been used severally in various oil companies for wastewater treatment, CO2 storage and removal of many pollutants. I had prepared various MOFS (MIL-53) kindly look for my work here (https://www.nairaland.com/2044554/thread-phd-students/36)....search for the paper online and read how it was prepared. Also look that nanobeads I prepared (https://www.nairaland.com/2044554/thread-phd-students/38)

- I haven't seen much literature on this topic.

There are billions of literature. You did not search well or you dont know how to search. Kindly visit www.sciencedirect.com, type the keywords (like crude oil or petroluem wastewater treatment, nanomaterial for crude oil treatment, removal or adsorption) play with the keywords.

- even to prepare a proposal has been an issue for me coz of scarcity of materials

There are lots of materials. Do your search. After you have done, download all papers related to your search, the ones you cant download due to access, mention it here I will help you download and send to you. Summarize all, then write your proposal. After then post your proposal here for those gurus to help you review.

Best wishes!

My elders in the house, I greet you all. Please Prof Wip and others, please need your sincere advise on this very serious matter based on your experience and exposure. I have a brother that graduated with Bsc 1st class and Msc distinction in chemistry and he just secured fully funded Ph.D admission in Canada, at the same time he's being given a lecturing appointment here in Nigeria. Assistant lecturer to be precised and his take home is almost 350k monthly. He is seriously in a state of confusion and he does not want to make the greatest mistake of his life. Please which should he go for based on what you have seen and experienced out there?

Hi,

The decision can only be made by your brother, however, I can give my opinion. If I may ask which University offers him 350K take home monthly at assistant lecturer level? I don't know the assistant lecturer salary in Nigeria has increased this much, I have a colleague that finished PhD chemistry abroad with me and working as a lecturer I in Babcock University she does not earn near 350K. Anyway, I know most universities in Nigeria especially the Fed and State Universities do allow the employee to have study leave maybe 2-3 years after they start working at that capacity. And during the study leave the salary is still being paid and the person will be taking his/her PhD program.

In general, Ph.D. students will receive a minimum of $22000-25,000 if funded in the majority of Canadian Universities for chemistry. This stipend is conditional on academic and research progress or teaching performance if tied to a teaching assistanceship. In most cases, the stipend is exclusive of tuition which ranges $6500-8000 CAD. Depending on the province in Canada, accommodation and feeding monthly will range $1000-1800 monthly. So he can do the maths and see what is left. He will enjoy the training due to high and modern facilities and also lecturers that are well trained with a special focus on research.

If your brother is less than 25 years and since he graduated with First class both BSc and MSc as you said, then I may suggest he takes the lecturing if his salary is 350k monthly in Naija and take study leave after 2 years and he will always get funding due to his level of degree. During the two years, he should enhance his research skills and publication.

Best wishes in whatever decision he takes!

Thank you Prof. for your response and advice. It's actually a new fed university located in Niger Delta. Hazard allowance and Niger Delta factor are inclusive in the take home and that's what make the salary to be huge. its verifiable.

They don't do that in U.I. they allot students to supervisors based on discretion.

What is your advice sir?

Then, you wait to see the supervisor they select for you. If you are very smart, iconoclastic and active you can even beat the devil using his/her own formula.

As soon as you admitted, try to start majorly with your research by means of literature surveying and focus more on internationally published data not local. See how you can adapt your research interests to fit the supervisor field of research and don’t hesitate to seek for advise!

Since his PhD is fully funded, I would suggest he takes up the offer and do his PhD. If his concern is the pay which is what I could infer from your post, as a TA in a Canadian University, he is sure he will be comfortable enough during the program to live at least a reasonable life.

He can get a study leave without pay it will be approved faster than with pay. Let him accept the job oh..He can always get another scholarship.
