Lecturers who are not doctors ‘should no longer’ teach medical students Bodies of medical and dental practitioners in Nigeria say lecturers who are not medical doctors will no longer be allowed to teach medical students. At a meeting convened by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) in Abuja, the stakeholders said only medical doctors with degrees in basic medical sciences should lecture students. The medical practitioners also lamented the pass rate of foreign trained medical students, who sit for medical examination in the country. They said the high failure rate in post-graduate medical education is a reflection of poor training and assessment methods which needs improvement. “Medical doctors with degrees in basic medical sciences should lecture basic medical sciences in medical schools. Lecturers in basic medical sciences who are not medical doctors should be phased out over time,” the report read. “There are 42 universities where undergraduate medical education is taking place in Nigeria. Thirty two of the medical schools are fully accredited while 10 are partially accredited as at 2018. There are nine dental schools and three specialised universities of medical sciences. “About 3,700 medical students gain admission yearly. The pass rate of foreign trained medical students who sat for the MDCN exam has been reducing over time with the lowest being 15% in February 2018. “Undergraduate medical education in Nigeria is challenged by outdated curriculum, lecturers who are not medical doctors especially at the basic medical sciences level, insufficient or lack of teaching aids, sub-standard library, decay of infrastructure and laboratories, lecturers who are not themselves educators, and inadequately equipped clinics. “MDCN should ensure that graduating medical students have places to do horsemanship. It was suggested that private hospitals, general hospitals and some district hospitals can be affiliated with teaching hospitals and federal medical centres for the purpose of increasing the spaces available for house job.” Originally posted on Thecable https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thecable.ng/lecturers-not-doctors-no-longer-teach-medical-students/amp 8 Likes |

This is a wrong move. They will only understand things from a single perspective only. The world is embracing potpourri of knowledge and we shouldn’t be left behind to avoid victims of a single narrative. 11 Likes |

Bad news for lecturer who are not medical doctors but have PhD in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. It will be difficult to implement because there may not be sufficient personnel to fill the gap. 25 Likes 2 Shares |

Hmm, they might be true to an extent, but the plan might not be feasible now, Do we have enough medics in Basic medical Field?? When I was in 200level, we have docs and non medic taking us anatomy . I can still recollect majority of what the Medical Drs taught me in Anatomy like he when took embryology, he spoke of things he experienced during labor( according to his experience , in prolonged labor if the child is female there is more probability of survival than male.) 9 Likes |

ola12: Not necessarily, a physician's approach to pharmacology might be different from the pharmacist's. Most of the pharm you'll learn in a US medical school is taught by physicians...I guess it's different in Nigeria. Physicians can sufficiently teach pharm, but I think the PhDs are still needed to teach the early courses like cell biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, anatomy and physiology etc. Yeah, sometimes they teach you more than you care to know from the standpoint of a clinician, but no knowledge is a waste. I believe physicians could adequately teach everything in a medical school curriculum, but they'll have to surrender a lot of clinical responsibilities to do this. Of course, the medical student learns all about pathology and the management of these pathologies from the resident and attending physicians. 7 Likes |

miceroms: It is best and preferable for medical students to be taught the basic medical sciences by people who hold both a medical degree and a medical science degree. It does not mean holders of Medical Science qualifications only cannot teach, or are not good. Students need the basic medical science for clinical application, and that's the advantage the former brings to bear over the latter. That counts significantly, both in terms of precisely what the student really needs to know and the relevance of what he knows to clinical practice. That is best practice for medical education elsewhere When an anatomist teaches you the brachial plexus versus a doctor, you would know the difference. 15 Likes |

ola12: ha, this guy. wait.. so Y did u say so. before u answer, ask urself why the doctor is in the position to prescribe any drug and the pharmacist dispense thereafter. do u know the meaning of specialist ??. they av the final say as far as that area is concern except their fellow specialist says otherwise.. 7 Likes |

danilmo:I dont knw if u understand me or not. A doctor specialist is different from an actual pharmacist is all I'm saying. No matter how specialized he is in "pharmacology", dats still a pharmacist's domain. About the bolded, Pharmacists still scratch their heads daily wondering why, it isn't supposed to be so but it ended up dat way. Oh well 6 Likes |

ola12: because there knowledge of pathology , physiology, biochemistry, , Obstetric& gynecology, neuro, Medicine is scanty. so they can't, who told they scratch their head, that's international practice.. I guess ure mistaken production of drug to pharmacology. sorry , production is none of a doctor business, that production is valid in pharmaceutical company.(pharmacy specialist shine there) 7 Likes |

nervorum: exactly, 1. PhDs anatomy lecturer ll b asking their student to draw scapula, then to list all artery's forming anastomosis round it. then in one sentence for Applied anatomy. , while a a Medic Dr will ask u 1. in what conditions does scapula anastomosis become advantageous to both surgeon and the patient and WHY is it so.. .. now u ll see sweat dropping from ur body if u check the above question well, one look dry but the other major in clinical usage.. one of my viva question was what do I understand by rectal continence and the effect(I first shock ) .. PhDs may not even know this (sorry to say) I was taught the anatomy of the living why PhDs will only teach u anatomy of the dead.. ; D 29 Likes |

Racoon: Year one medical students are not medical students yet, they are called pre med students. In my second year and third year only one none medical doctor who taught anatomy stood out, Professor Anyanwu, he studied anatomy while in physiology, only a non medical doctor who is a professor could teach to ones understanding. Others were medical doctors who practice, bringing their clinical experience to the table, their teachings exceptional. In biochemistry sha majority were non medical doctors, some were good while others will just come and rant and go. Fast forward to post second mbbs class. Doctors teaching medical students make you think like a doctor. But they shouldnt ve phased out like that some non medical doctors can actually teach 6 Likes |
