We have a Toyota 4runner 2007(V6). 1GRFE with the following fault errors pulled out from the pcm

1) P0016- crankshaft position-camshaft position correlation (bank1 sensor a)

2) P0022- camshaft position 'a'- timing over ratarded(bank2)

3) p0012- camshaft position 'a'- timing over-retarded (bank1)

4)P0456- evaporative emission control system leak detected (very small leak)

Symptoms exhibited by vehicle:

1) oil light flickers
2) so much internal engine noise
3) sluggish movement

Diagnosis:

** Since oil light flickers, an oil pressure tester would be used to determine oil pressure from the oil pump using an OTC oil pressure tester. After this is done a comparison would be drawn based on what the manufacturer recommends

N.b oil pump is an internal part within the engine

To carry out oil pressure test. The oil pressure switch has to be loosed out inorder to get right fit for adaptor attachment.

After idling the ride . Oil pump pressure falls below 3psi after 5mins of idling as against 4psi recommended by Toyota

No you do not need to loosen out the oil filter. Oil filter remains

@ 3000rpm as adviced by the manual. This was the result

Please note this engine cost a million naira in the local market so we need to save this baby

Next step is to collect radiator coolant for reuse. This would be done by loosening out the pintle on the engine block as seen in the pix below

Variable valve timing intelligence (VVTi) solenoid would be inspected and tested shortly

Let me guess with the engine noise and fault timing chain might be loose from broken guides and bad tensioner lacking lubrication.

From the test carried out on oil pump. There is an oil pump failure. With this timing chain, timing tensioner and dampers wouldn't be getting expected lubrication hence the timing jump. But let's take out those things to inspect them physically. Car owner has been using 5w30 full synthetic. Last service was done together with polytron

The culprit. Heavy sludge on the bank 2. Timing chain has some slack already.a reason for the heavy engine noise. This is gonna be real good

Toyota motor oil 5w30 when the vehicle was first bought. Currently using duramax fully synthetic oil. From the record the Toyota motor oil caused this. That oil is not fully synthetic and cannot be overstretched. If 20w50 engine would have been locked up by now

It's evident that the Toyota motor oil 5w30 is an engine destroyer. Which ever way we would get the engine back to life. Engine is 1million naira

Okay so I don’t believe that an original Toyota oil of correct spec for the environment that the car is used for is faulty.

That being said, a 5W30 viscosity is suspicious to be trusted in Nigeria’s harsh environment.

What was the oil change interval like?

What oil filter was used?

Consistently through the service life.

I doubt if Toyota motor oil is at fault.. I will say extended oil change with a non-synthetic Toyota motor oil caused the sludge

Toyota motor oil has synthetic 0W-20 which is labelled synthetic.. As for TMO 5w-20 & 30 without any label of synthetic or mineral.. I always assume it's mineral oil

You don't necessarily need synthetic motor oil.

Use synthetic oil when the engine has been built for such close tolerances.

What did Toyota say about oil for this truck? Did they specify synthetic oil? I would guess not.

I've seen many race engines that use non synthetic oil.

This engine failed (by looking at the internals ) due to burnt oil, abused oil system, extended service change internal on subpar oil.

PS: I peaked inside my 4Runners engine via the oil cap and I quickly closed it so I didn't puke I just pray it makes it for 7 or so more visits then I'll yank it out.
