Buhari’s 800-metre Walk, Not Parameter For Fitness – Doctors by Omooba77: 10:38am On Aug 25, 2018 |
Some renowned medical practitioners have come out to clear the air over the recent 800 metre walk by President Muhammadu Buhari and the controversy it is generating. Among the medics is a professor of Community Health and Consultant Public Health Physician, Bayo Onajole, who said that the walk should not be seen as yardstick to measure the president’s fitness or wellness. He made the clarification yesterday when he spoke to our correspondent on the telephone. The physician described the controversy surrounding the walk as unnecessary as, according to him, someone could walk up to five kilometres but that doesn’t necessarily imply that that person was healthy. Onajole, who is also the vice chairman of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN), said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) defined good health as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” He said: “A lot of us have one ailment or the other; some of us are lucky, they cover their ailment with their skin. Some cover their ailment with their clothes. “Others when you see them you will know that they are sick. The fact is that death is not determined by age.” He said though the president walking 800 meters could probably to repel the rumour that he was very ill, and had visited the United Kingdom for 10 days to seek medical treatment. “The walk was to show that his health condition was not as bad as many people claim. But for somebody of his age, people should not expect him to be like Cristiano Ronaldo, the footballer.” While saying that the 800 metre walk was not a parametre to determine the president’s fitness, Onajole said the Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, is 92-years-old, but that his mental faculties is very functional. “The President of Tunisia is also on a wheel chair, but that does not imply that his mental faculty is not functional,” he said. Also speaking on the issue, the chairman of the Association of Advanced Family Planning Nigeria (AAFPN), Dr. Ejike Oji, said the walk could actually be interpreted to mean that the fellow has some reasonable level of wellness. This, according to Oji, is based on the background that President Buhari had been ill and many had claimed that he cannot do anything. He said: “The only way is to run a comprehensive medical checkup for the president. But, if someone is gravely ill, even without running a medical test, the ailment would show." https://reubenabati.com.ng/index.php/component/k2/item/12377-buhari-s-800-metre-walk-not-parametre-for-fitness-doctors/news |
