The gearbox is one of the most complex and expensive parts in a car. If the gearbox is broken, you will have to pay a hefty sum of money to have it repaired, and at the same time, the repaired gearbox might still never make driving feel safe to you again.

The gearbox is one of the most complex and expensive parts in a car. If the gearbox is broken, you will have to pay a hefty sum of money to have it repaired, and at the same time, the repaired gearbox might still never make driving feel safe to you again. Let's equip some basic education about maintenance of this car parts with Naijauto.com

Reasons that lead to a damaged gearbox

Common causes of gearbox overheating and eventual malfunction include heavy loads, severe road conditions, or continuous starting and stopping in traffic jams, etc.

Gearboxes with oiling issues are more easily damaged

When operating at high temperatures, the gearbox oil becomes overheated and oxidized into layers of scales and residues inside the gearbox, therefore losing its lubricative characteristics. Other ancillary components such as rubber welds as well as the internal parts of the gearbox are exposed to constant heat, which makes them become brittle and some of the oil may leak out. It is therefore essential to check on the gear oil regularly. Too little or too much oil in the gear oil container can both cause substantial damage to the gearbox.

Symptoms of a gearbox with maintenance issues

Some of the most recognizable symptoms of a gearbox with issues include gear oil leakage, flickering engine light, hissing sounds or unusual engine vibration, rattling sounds of metal parts, or the gearbox taking forever to respond. If there is a lack of oil, the automatic transmission won’t be able to shift, which results in some pretty serious problems.

How to protect the gearbox while driving

You should regularly check and change the gear oil as necessary. Keep in mind that the only suitable gear oil for your car is listed in the owner’s manual. Using the wrong type of gear oil can damage the gearbox.

The lifespan of the gearbox depends on how the car’s owner treat it

The operation and use of the gearbox greatly affect its lifespan. Drivers need to shift the gears in a decisive manner. For manual transmissions, make sure to only shift gears when the clutch has been released and do not skip the gear order. For automatic transmissions, never set the gear to reverse (R) or Parking (P) gears when the car has not stopped completely.

You should not purchase a second-hand car with gearbox makeover

If you intend to buy a used car, you should carefully check the history of the car in order to avoid buying a vehicle that has had its gearbox replaced or repaired.

Check the history of the car and its gearbox carefully if you intend to buy a used car

There are cases where vehicles with overhauled gearboxes or engines might operate even better than the original. However, that entirely depends on the skills of the mechanic, which most of us won’t be able to reliably evaluate. Therefore, it’s best to avoid cases of gearbox overhaul when purchasing a secondhand vehicle.

Come to Volvo market close to daleko, you'll surely get it. I've stopped giving contacts of parts sellers to strangers cos next thing I'll be accused of being a thief else I would've dropped some here.

But if you get to that market, your problem is solved. Cheers

Generally speaking engine is more expensive than any other car part for all Toyotas, Honda's, Nissan etc Except may be for some super luxury brands.

I guess that maybe true for those inferior brands of vehicles.

Nice write up!

+depending on the type of vehicle, and the manufacturer's components locations, for instance, in the RX330, and some other American vehicles, the transmission system, at least on some I ha e worked on, have got transmission system coolers positioned at the front of the grille (at the condenser side), or the driver side fender(in the RX330).

The transmission system coolers are there to dissipate the excessive heat generates by the transmission system, during operations. If the transmission system coolers are unable to efficiently dissipate this heat, that leads to transmission fluid additives breakdowns, and subsequent transmission failure.

Always ensure the transmission cookers are not clogged with debris, and detritus, to help heat exchanges.

You could use an old tooth brush, and water to cleanup the dirts.

Do not use pressurised washing machines on the cooler.

That's my one cent addition.
