To demolish illegal structures

The Federal Government has commenced move to rehabilitate the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu with plan to demolish illegal structures standing on the runway path.

As part of the planned rehabilitation, there are indications that the runway of the airport may be shut down temporarily as done in Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja last year.

Also, to make the airport operational at night, the government has procured Instrument Landing System (ILS) and airfield lighting system which would be installed once the right of way is acquired.

This emerged when a team of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) inspected the airport designated as one of the international airports in the country on Wednesday.

The inspection was coming few days after the Southeast Governors cried out to the Federal Government to intervene in the airport.

Though the Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Mukhtar Usman said the runway is still in good shape and meets international safety requirements, he explained that there is the need to improve the landing and riding quality of aircraft on the runway.

He said, “We came here by air and we landed except for the landing quality, there is a lot that can be done to improve on the riding quality of the runway and it is because of those failures that you see in some areas. Plans are on the way to carry out similar works that took place in Abuja runway to ensure longer life, better riding quality for the runway. We have some international flights coming to Enugu, some are three times a week.

“DREAMLINER lands here, Boeing 777 also lands here, especially for cargo. Generally speaking, we will say the runway is still very safe to operate. This is in line with the government policy to ensure that whatever is done is in line with the international standard. Arrangements are being made to rehabilitate the runway.”

The acting Managing Director of FAAN, Engr. Salisu Daura while giving insight on the planned installation of the ILS and airfield lighting system said a clear distance of one kilometre was required to carry out the installation.

During the inspection, the team visited Orie Emene market and Methodist Church Nigeria Central School in Emene which are parts of the structures that might have to give way for the installation of the improved landing system.

Daura, who is also the Director of Engineering of FAAN, said many structures and buildings would have to be demolished “because we only have 420 meters instead of the one kilometre we need.”

“Safety is very paramount in aviation. You can’t have aircraft hovering so low over a populated area. Definitely certain structures must go”, he said.

The aviation authorities are however soliciting for the cooperation of the state government to fast-track the acquisition of the right of way to be able to install the equipment.

According to the DG of NCAA, acquiring the right of way is not within the purview of the Federal Government as “it is completely under the control of the state”.

He however said talks are ongoing at the highest levels in aviation and the state to address the right of way and other germane issues critical to improving the state of the airport.

Christmas is round the corner, they have announced cancellation of flights to Enugu again this year, just like last year.

This never happened under GEJ.

Enugu does not deserve more than an airstrip. I haven't seen the justification for an airport.

Don't mind them!

So what exactly was done last year when they shut the airport over the busy Christmas period? So if the SE governors hadn't made noise about the decrepit state of the airport these guys wouldn't have known it needs a comprehensive work done and not all this ad-hoc/patch-patch measures they been doing so far?

One thing i've come to realise about this wicked gov't in power is that when there's a hue and cry about any injustice anywhere in the SS or SE they rush down with talk of plans to do this and that to wet the appetite, and when things calm down not much ever changes.

You think I write out of imagination. What is in Enugu that an airstrip cannot serve. Warri, an oil city is served well by Osubi airstrip. Onitsha strategically deserves an airport more than Enugu.

Okay, since the structures to be demolished are outside the airport such as markets etc, why are they shutting down the airport?

Also, if you are demolishing structures that are two miles away from the airport, but will not demolish other structures and classrooms built almost next to the runway by airforce, would that not be silly?

Buhari is having a nightmare that the AIIA, Enugu has continued to grow despite his wicked neglect. Thus, he wants to close it down indefinitely for good using one silly demolition excuse or another.

Everyone knows Buhari's evil intentions. If he really wants to improve the airport, let Buhari concession the airport to private consortium that will develop it sincerely like a business.

This is the ONLY international airport in Nigeria without a completed taxiway. Buhari stopped it in 2015 and everybody has since forgotten about the abandoned airport's taxiway which Buhari never restarted. Now the excuse to close it are masts and markets that are miles away from the airport. Meanwhile the airforce classroom buildings in the picture below which is illegally situated right on the edge of the runway are not even discussed at all.

Goodluck and Stella Oduah claimed they renovated this same Airport four years ago. This shows how corrupt and Clueless GEJ and his Government was. To even think that, Stella Oduah was from that region and She was the then Minister for Aviation yet, she helped in syphoning the funds meant for that project and a shabby job was done just to save face.

Later the Igbo's will be shouting that, they are marginalised.

Thank God for Buhari.

Enugu is dear to Ndigbo and well meaning Eastern regioners just as Kaduna is to every Northerner. Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state reminded Nigerians last month that Enugu remains the defacto capital city of SE and SS.

Statistically, Enugu or even Owerri airport records more domestic passenger traffic than Kano airport. On the international operations, Ethiopian airlines has been plying the route since 5 years making good profit.
Onitsha is not complaining about airport cos Enugu airport is there for them.

What Onitsha needs is a functional maritime port so that the traders can direct their consignments to the city as port of final destination.

Thus, what is in Enugu that Warri don't have is the political importance, urbanization, population and passenger traffic,

If buhari can do that, and the pdp fuxcks up with their zoning arrangement in 2019, I don't see why the east should not vote for buhari if he can promise to support an igbo APC candidate in 2023.

Politics is a game of interest after all, and some people in pdp are trying to kill the party by not including the east in the 2019 ticket.
