Are Women Preachers Allowed In The Church? by Nobody: 4:43pm On Sep 05, 2018 |
This seems to be a highly controversial topic in the modern day church, as there are acclaimed scriptural references as to why it should not be. However it is imperative that while understanding this, we need to remove the spirit of ignorance and insecurity out of the equation and in an unbiased way look at the Bible in determining the answer. A lot of people fail to realise that the Bible is not only a spiritual text but it’s also a historical text that must be analysed very carefully. Firstly, one of the most regularly quoted scripture that references against the practice of women preachers is found in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church”. Now if this scripture is taken literally, this would mean that women are not to speak in church under any circumstances. That would result in women not being allowed to pray, worship or give testimonies in church and that seems a bit unusual, especially since in another verse Paul mentions “But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth…” (1 Corinthians 11:5) This leads us to conclude that there is a deeper issue here than what meets the eye. Looking at the spirit of the chapter in which the former verse is written, we can see that Paul was talking about having divine order in the church. Now, according to religious traditions prevalent during those days, it customary for men and women to sit separately on either sides in the church. Evidently, women in the Corinthian church were calling out to their husbands on the other side during services, thus causing much confusion. Also, women normally in those days were not students of the law and were not allowed to go to the synagogue to get teaching, so it was only their husbands who were educated of the law.Consequently, in response to the confusion, Paul administers a word of discipline to the women stating that they should ask their questions at home in order to avoid interrupting the meetings. Another scripture popularly quoted is 1 Timothy 2:11-12) (Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence). Some interpret this passage to mean that a woman should never teach in a church, which is wrong . In interpreting this verse, it is important to remember that the Greek words for “man” and “husband,” as well as the words for “woman” and “wife,” are the same. So with that knowledge, we can see that context of the scripture shows that Paul is speaking about divine order in the home rather than order of ministry. What Paul is stating for all intents and purposes, is that the woman should remain submissive under her husband and that she must not manipulate or “usurp” the authority given to him in the household. This is because God has issued man as the head and the priest of the home. Of course, a man who is not a believer is not equipped to lead his household in the way of the Lord and the responsibility sometimes falls on the wife through default. However, God’s divine order is for the husband to lead his family in spiritual things and he is able to do this properly only to the degree he is submitted to the Lordship of Jesus in his own life. The Bible is replete with scriptural references showing women in leadership and ministerial positions. One example in the Old Testament is of a young Jewish girl by the name of Esther (a basic “rags to riches story”), we see that by the favour of God on her life she was able to be Queen (2nd in ranking) over an entire nation for the sole purpose of the deliverance of Israel (Esther 4:14). While in the New Testament, we see women such as Priscilla (Acts 18:24-36Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)), who taught Apollos alongside with her husband. It is interesting to note that when she is mentioned in Romans 16:3.her name is placed before her husband’s which indicates the importance of her ministry. Then there is Pheobe who Paul describes as a “servant of the church” which comes from the Greek word, “diakonon”, meaning “deaconess.” In Romans 16:2Open in Logos Bible Software (if available), he calls her a “succourer of many,” which comes from the Greek word, prostatis, meaning “overseer, one who has been given spiritual authority over others.” It is evident that Paul was not opposed to women in the ministry, for he says in Philippians 4:3. “Greet those women who laboured with me in the Gospel”. In conclusion, God commissioned both men and women to preach the gospel but because of improper research and incorrect Biblical interpretation, this commission cannot then become one-sided. In fact, the focus should be placed more on the message than the messenger. What are your thoughts on women preachers? 4 Likes 3 Shares

Let's read the 1 Corinthians 14 forward Verse 36 (from where you stopped) OR did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached? Praying and prophesying is not the same as talking in the church, you pray by talking to God and prophesy when you are under the control of the holy Spirit. If we are to judge by all the photos attached to these post the people have modernized the teaching which shouldn't be so because the law as the teaching must remain the same. What Apostle Paul wanted the church to avoid is immorality and dis-order which has eventually found its way into the church because you have allowed women to control the Church affairs. 1 corinthians 2-10--- Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Why would you as a man stand in front of a woman that she place her hand on your head? What kind of blessing are you hoping to receive? Let me add. 1 Timothy 2:9-12 New International Version (NIV) 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. 11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet. 16 Likes |

God created the world in a balance, where u have words and opposite. Everything in this life, both living things and none living thing has their own peculiar role to play. The very moment u start to distort or reverse this roles is when u start chaos in this world. If you truly believe God is omnipotent, omniknoweth and have total dominion over things, then things like this should not be questioned. In the beginning God created Adam and later Eve from his ribs as a support for him. If God wants to create Eve first or the two together at the same time HE can do it but the reason is best known to HIM cos HE knows what we don't. Men are naturally created to be the HEAD and women act as vice or support. This is because there can never be two HEADS in a household else there will be chaos. Aside that Man is physically and mentally stronger than woman (except in rare case) However, every man is born of a woman except Adam. To build a good family there must a Head and vice, the head goes out to look for food and shelter while the vice takes care of the home front. However, for a good leader to maintain a balance in the household he must gain the cooperation of his vice. Have u ever asked urself why God didnt send women as Prophets?? But every prophet was born of a woman. The bible has its reason for explicitly stating that women should remain silent in church while the other verse u quoted “But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth…”. was just stating women pray/prophesy and it wasnt lead. Or have u ever head of female pope? Why was there no women among the twelve disciples of Jesus but most of the people that assisted him were women. This is because men have their role and women too have theirs. without Woman Man can never ever be born but women can conceive without man in the case of Mary. 6 Likes |

higgs: Hole-ly BuyBull is a conflicting book which faithfools pick and chose verses from it based on his/her preconceived conclusions. this is why there are 30,000 Christian denominations. The Bible is the world's longest-running, most widely respected, and least reliable Rorschach Test. You can look in it and see anything you want to see, find anything you want to find, justify any pre-ordained conclusion you prefer, or validate any prejudice because the Bible has it all: love, hate; revenge, redemption; war, peace; slavery, freedom; humility, arrogance; kindness, cruelty; and, as Mark Twain observed, “upwards of a thousand lies”! 3 Likes 1 Share |

Your twisting of the bible amazes me. Women were fond of calling onto their husbands hence the need for " women should not speak verse" . What of single women. Were they also calling into their boyfriends? Nowadays some even twist the bible to support homosexuality 7 Likes 1 Share |

Humblechuks002: The modern Christian church goes against almost everything the Bible commands, especially with women shutting their mouth in church and covering their weave ladened heads. Now, the women too have joined the gangs of tithe demanding prophets and seers of fake visions. 4 Likes |

No The best moral book of all times, the bible, has taught us the morals that women are inferior to men, they are deceptive and should not be in a position of leadership. After all, woman was created out of man. The fall of man started with a woman, the strongest man ever fell to the deception of a woman, the wisest man was ruined by women. The bible taught us that women are just objects of satisfaction when the Lord told the children of Israel to keep women for them selves as spoils of war. And in conclusion, it was clearly stated in the Bible that women are unfit to open their mouths in church, they should remain silent. 4 Likes |

Christianity is the most confused religion ever! Before you start quoting me, just know that am neither a Muslim nor an atheist. Am a Christian, but that religion is confused. Islam on the other hand is not a religion, it's an occultic group. Everything that has to do with cultism (which is bloodshed) is what is obtainable in Islam. I wish there was a third and better option to these two religions in this country, I would have tried seeking this God there. Christianity that I was brought up in is not giving me the satisfaction that I want. Church self don tire me And finally, Christian girls are a disgrace to everything they represent 6 Likes 1 Share |

The verse is too clear to be misinterpreted. It's not talking about submissiveness of wives to their husbands at home; but about women ministering in the church which is the practice today. Op is labouring so hard to justify that. Christians have a way of justifying what ever they do using the Bible even when it's obvious they are going against it. If this was in the d Testament, Op would simply use that as a justification, even when some pastors still use favourable verses in the Old Testament to brainwash their naive followers. But this is in the New Testament and Op is just beating around the bush in an effort to misinterpret what is clear. If the verse had as well literally encouraged women preaching in churches, it wouldn't be subjected to interpretation but regularly referred to as a boost to women evangelism in the church. Whenever a verse in the scripture is subjected to laborious interpretation, it is always an indication that it stated what some persons do not want to observe or are simply not observing.A typical example is the verse being interpreted. There is much division in Christainity principally resulting from interpretation of the Bible, but not in respect of this topic as each denomination is apparently opposed to it. Only His grace can save us well 5 Likes |
