A closer look at the Umkhonto IR, I'm actually surprised by it's size (if this is the actual scale). 4 Likes

All the Denel missiles on show. There aren't too many pics of the Impi missile publicly available, and it was developed virtually in secrecy compared to the other missile programs. Mix & match of other Denel missile components. 1 Like |

One partially unrelated news... ROSOBORONEXPORT, the main export arm for Russian hardware is under US sanction for propping up Assad. What are the possible implications if Nigeria goes to Russia for weapons while we're still awaiting Tucano jets? |

Then there's the Denel Badger IFV Mortar Variat, I don't think we've seen this in public before. That's about 6km of mortar fire range.

Another mortar carrier in a form of the Hornet RDV for the SASFB. For the uninitiated, this is mostly a behind the enemy lines SF RD-ATV (hence the small size). So one can use it to sneak into concealed positions and launch mortar shells on an enemy target. Eg fuel stations, enemy aircrafts as soon as they leave hangers, communication centers, etc. Also, you can use it to cover retreating oparators or simply playing routine disruption on the enemy then vanish into some thicket. 2 Likes

They sacrificed range for warhead size. It's about twice the weight of its competitors. You need lots of HE to kill some of the giant Russian anti-ship missiles out there. That's why they wanted to modify it for surface-to-surface targets like small boats etc. I'm not aware of any naval missile that can also take on surface targets. The Raytheon SM-6 can ,but its the size of a exocet. GreenandGold: 1 Like |

Problem with using the Ingwe motor from the parts bin is that you wont be able to hang 2 missiles next to each other. The rocket burn will damage the one next to it. I guess they'll use it on smaller UCAVS and market the one based on the Mokopa on bigger ones. ssaengine: 1 Like |

ssaengine:Yep. The Seeker Snyper carries 2 on opposite hard points. Fun fact: what's the name of the "Saudi armed UAV" that's suspiciously very similar to the Seeker and has been using Impis to take out HVTs in Yemen ? Brings to mind this story, which I think is the most note-worthy to come out of AAD2018 (apparently AAD as one of the top 15 military shows on the planet is comparable to some shows held on the continent ): a potential game-changer for the SA Defence Industry if this come to fruition. http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53184:saudi-arabia-turns-to-south-africa-to-bolster-its-defence-industry&catid=7:Industry&Itemid=116 |

ssaengine: I actually approve of our peace-time practice of sending 2 Squadron Gripen pilots down to the various schools to work as instructors, leaving 9-12 pilots at 2 Sq. The top command element of the air component currently here in the DRC, for example, are all 2 Sq Grip pilots. Where I do quibble however, is that the 6 months they're supposed to go back to 2 Sq to maintain currency, is now 9 months . |

GreenandGold: The mortar system on Hornets is currently being upgraded to the Scorpion system which was acquired in 2017. Details: The Scorpion mobile mortar system is now ready for production and can be delivered to the South African armed forces. The mortar system and the onboard fire control system was fully developed by Thales South Africa. 61mech doesn't like the automatic loader and neither do the Recces. They're only opting for the automatic laying and aiming, which is why the project isn't yet complete as Thales SA now has to rejig the fire control system.

61mech: Yep. What I still can't puzzle out is why they're sinking so much wonga into prototypes with no prospects of orders. Unless they've inflated their R & D costs in some sophisticated scam to launder the $500m that the dictator Erdogan accused them of embezzling out of Turkey. They're seemingly exactly the sort of investors our defence industry doesn't need! PICS: SANDF unrelated 2 Likes
