Magichand:
Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has expressed how saddened she felt about the backlash her question to Hillary Clinton, an American politician, generated on social media, particularly among Nigerians.

Speaking to a group of young Nigerians during a hangout session in Lagos on Saturday, Adichie said she was surprised about the reaction the question generated, noting that it made her sad seeing her parents read horrible things Nigerians said about her. In an interview with Hilary Clinton, the author, whose work has gained recognition, including winning the Orange Prize award, asked the female politician why she had described herself first as a ‘wife’ before other things on her social media bio.

This question, which Adichie said she considered harmless, brought backlash from Nigerians, including celebrities, many of which were premised on the notion that the reference in her question was a negative example for thousands of Nigerian women who follow the author religiously.

Adiche said she felt sad seeing her parents read the negative comments thrown at her. “watching my mother, I felt close to tears,” she said. Adichie, whose clapback at a French journalist who had asked her if there were libraries in Nigeria warmed her to the hearts of many, said the episode made her begin to rethink how she felt about Nigeria.

When I got back to Lagos and there is just all of this noise and apparently it’s just all of ugliness, people said to me: 'they are writing public letters to you. They said you are a demon; that you want to break up marriages, all kinds of things. I felt. Let me be honest, that is the first time I really started to rethink how I felt about Nigeria.

I have never done that before. Until then, I had been a very dutiful daughter of Nigeria and I am still at that phase where I am thinking about how I really, really feel about Nigeria.”

She however explained she had asked the question for political reasons. She said: “quite frankly, the reason I asked that is that it was a political thing, particularly in the contest of Hilary Clinton a woman who had to change her name and take her husband’s name because people would not vote for her husband if she had kept her name.

A woman that for many Americans they still need to see a woman in domestic terms before they can concede a little power to her politically. We don’t think that of men.”

fela wasn't a bad example 2d entertainment industry. If that's ur position, then u obviously no nothing about music. Fela was d creator of his own brand of music, afro beat music yet u say he was overhyped. U obviously don't no what it is 2 identify a key on a keyboard how much understand music in general.

For u 2 say fela was hyped is that u no nothing of felas fight against d military govts since 1977 during d obasanjo regime up 2d late 1980s, with d babangida administration.

What's ur basis 4 comparing chimaMANda & fela? Did they fight d same battles? ChimaMANda is in d US flexing. Do u no how many times fela slept in military prisons? Do u no his mother was killed by d military? Y bring fela into this conversation? Pls make a bit if research about fela if u weren't born as at d time he walked this earth and stop ur displaying ur tribalistic myopism.

Nobody is dragging feminism with chimaMANda. She is d one trying so hard 2 prove 2d world that she is a feminist and in doing so she forgot were she came from. If u say u are an Igbo man, then u should understand what happens when a person decides 2 forget his/her roots

They feel deriding them and bringing them down a peg or two will rile up Igbos protective of their accomplished sisters, and this is enough reason for them to have a go!

But Chimamanda should know that generally speaking, the average Nigerian is very toxic. If she wants to live long, she needs to stay away from Nigerians and focus on mingling with people who come from less toxic and misogynist cultures. Anyway, Chimamanda will learn.

lolz! You see this is why sentiment is bad, if you are saying all these about fela then I doubt you have read Chimamanda's books, e.g That Thing Around Your Neck. You better go and read it, I loved this woman's style of writing after Purple Habiscus but I wondered what she was teaching us in her other books, silent homosexual stories, she is trying to please an American audience while trying to be all Nigerian, I am not even a Christian and I found somethings in that book offending on behalf of Christians... I don't get this lady, I dnt even think she gets herself either. Let her remain in her Emelika! You are not speaking from a balanced place. Forget the fact she is Igbo.

Ask them o! Like I said many whether for or against her haven't even read her book! Trying to sell us stories of people that went to America and became somehow somehow! She wants to please Americans while still being all I am African and Nigerian. Madam shd choose one abeg. There was Chinua Achebe! Buchi Emecheta I dnt think they will be proud of her writings. This one she isn't rethinking Nigeria, who cares. We like our Naija o. I could never live anywhere else, it's not rosy but it's alright.

Igbo this, Igbos that!

A supposed Igbo woman who has lost her senses to the West wants to impose unwanted western lifestyle on us, so as to ruin homes and destroy our ladles' futures

And as a typical tribalist, you are narrowing it down to Igbo

FYI, I am more Igbo than you are.

If I see evil lurking around, I will attack it in toto

Adichie, who is married but still bears Ms., should keep her madness for her family and for Americans who enjoy it

I condemn and reject her feminism that seeks to ruin homes and end marriages with all my might

What will people not do for likes on nairaland, how dare you compare fela with chimanda Adachie, they are two different people, fighting for different things.
Fela came when Nigerians needed a mouth piece and he did his bid and can never be forgotten in history of Nigeria, today you are enjoying democracy and freedom of speech, just know that some people in the past fought for what you have today in their own way, unfortunately for fela his mother died, as a fighter, which didn't stop fela from his beliefs and and he was never tribalistic cos he knows every Nigerian was going through same treatment,so he was never hyped but recognized world over as a freedom fighter, and equally respected here by both religious leaders and commoners for his stance and ruggedity which will continue till we see some better, but for now no one as been able to fill that space.

But for Chidiman Adichie who I respect for her intellect and gifted writing style, and she's trying to create a niche for herself, but causing unnecessary issues in the balance of things, pls tell me does her stance actually depicts tribal or it just your own way of understanding things.

Why can't we discuss things the way they are,do we gave to always show the world how stupid and backward we are,in this modern era,we cant grow this way,we've had many and still more to come intelligent Igbo women who have done great exploits

You can believe whatever you choose, but just you know your opinion wont change the fact that
Fela is an enigma and nothing you bloody nobody can do about that, you can play and fool some people who believed in your deranged idealogies ,just like Bob Marley,Fela will always be remembered for the good fight he willingly fought,so ask yourself whta do you want to be remembered for[/s]?

Trash I am the truth that keeps banging in all you myopic dunderheads.
