For me what makes Obiano the greatest Governor ever in Anambra is finally giving Onitsha a modern Referral hospital.
Onitsha is the ONLY city of its size in Nigeria without a modern tertiary hospital. Even Aba that we will love to mock has a fully functional Teaching Hospital serving residents of Aba.

In the past, people in Onitsha had to travel to Enugu or Asaba to get medical treatment from a public hospital. This was beyond shameful, but our people just didn't care about decent well equipped Medical Center of Excellence in Onitsha until they became sick or got injured in an accident. Many times, transferring them to Enugu meant that no family member could visit them and so many other logistic problems.

The present effort to upgrade Onitsha Specialist Hospital into a modern center of excellence is the greatest legacy of Obiano.

I personally know thousands of people who would have been alive today if we had a properly equipped and modern hospital serving Onitsha. But all the former Governors simply pretended it was not an issue until Obiano came. Posterity will be kind to Obiano for giving Onitsha a truly modern public hospital.
this isn’t true.

Boromeo in Onitsha, iyi enu at ogidi, anambra hospital at Awka, teaching hospital at Nnewi, missionary hospital at waterfront etc to mention a few hospital in anambra have always been functional.

People journeying to enugu for medical assistance do that for personal reasons and/or specialist reason I.e the brain surgery hospital in enugu.

Now anambra has a quantum number of hospital springing up..

What's this one yapping? ANSUTH is in Awka serving Anambra central, NAUTH is at Nnewi serving Anambra south and other parts of the SE region that do not have teaching hospital.

In Onitsha there are countless govt hospitals, like Waterside hospital, Borromew hospital, General hospital now being upgraded to Specialist hospital. There was never a time people were leaving the state to other states to get medic, rather it was the other way round. Though Obiano has added to the excellent medical facilities in the state.

When Iyi Enu hospital in Ogidi was established , there were no hospital anywhere else in the SE. Just like when CKC and DMGS Onitsha were established there were no other plaoe in the SE with Western educational institution. Anambra has always been the leader from day one. You guys should stop coming here to say what you don't know.

I still maintain my stand. It is you are not too well or you are a robot. You can never be more interested in your neighbors than yourself.

From the time i met you on NL you have never discussed about your own Delta state? Why? That you grew up in Anambra or anywhere else in Igboland is not a reason for neglecting your place. Spare some of the time for your own state. You like discussing other states and never your own state. Does it mean you loath your state and don't want the same development you profess for others in your own state? I don't understand it.
.
Open a thread about Delta state and start telling us about development there starting from when the state was carved out from old Bendel state.

Nwanne, you must be high on something. I don't need any governor to pay me to speak the obvious.
The ONLY reason i came to this site is to give and share ideas for the betterment of Anambra and Igboland Since the Governors are on the Driver's seat in these states, the governors driving in the right direction are applauded and those who are failing woefully are booed openly.

Yes, Peter Obi performed very well in office, but failed to improve the State's internally generated revenue system and failed in opening up new housing districts for Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi. Infact, Peter Obi placed a silly embargo on developing the Akpaka forest resrve which could have been a state of the art modern estate in Anambra. If he had developed the place very well, all the haphazard building that came up overnight could have been in a very well planned modern estate with underground drainage, tree lined streets etc. In terms of Housing development, Peter Obi failed woefully.

At the time of his rule, Peter Obi was the best governor to ever rule the state. However, Obiano has since surpassed Peter. My only anger with Peter is that he could have taken the glory that afterall he brought Obiano for the state instead of trying to undermine him.

Anambra is bigger than Peter Obi or Obiano, thus i firmly supported Obiano because i found no need for Peter Obi to attack him since he was still performing much above average.

Yes, Mbadinuju was the worst Governor in Anambra's history. Many Military administrator who robbed the state black and blue were even better than him. So, i really thought you were trying to re-write history to call a total failure , a successful governor which Mbadinuju was not.

In another matter, I was watching Enyimba vs Rayon sports on Tv yesterday. So before kickoff, the broadcaster decided to show a drone shot of Aba town, the areas around the stadium. It was a horrible sight to behold. Aba looked like a war-torn town which had been nuked and left desolate for half a century. DSTV ended up demarketing Aba and exposing that rot of a town.

Award winning author, Anambra born Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie advocates for the abolition of bride price in Igbo culture. Has she gone too far with her feminist agenda? This is what she said...

"When I got married, I felt very conflicted about the payment of bride price. And my father, a very lovely man, said he didn't want any money because we were not selling anybody. Instead he asked for something symbolic.

“And so he asked for 1 kobo, because of its symbolism. I think bride price should be scrapped from our culture."

Government has no business doing this and should never have be involved in the Agulu resort and hotel in Onitsha. Rather they can provide land to investors, developers and businessesmen and women at a discounted rate plus other incentives as 10-yr waive of property tax to build low-income stores for traders on a deeded development clause..the stores must be sold to low-income traders only. Anambra government have similar programs for large investors, industrialists and entrepreneurs in Anambra where they provide you free land and other tax incentives.

Government should regulate the type of commercial buildings constructed. Plazas should be modern or kept maintained with conveniences provided for like toilets, water, and parking.

The only tax reduction should be for large employment generating businesses.

About the poor, yes cities can provide a way for people to uplift themselves but you need a regulated environment to create that. Go read zoning, commercial laws of London or New York. Those cities rig business to those with capital not anybody who just left the village. So you can't start selling torches on the street. You must have a store front or licensed premises.

They know that capital is what drives organization and scale. When it's just you and your barrow you don't need to open a bank account, hire workers, buy furniture, pay for electricity, create signs, print flyers, pay tax etc. Capital grows sophisticated business not street trading.

A typical Nigerian city is marked by primitive markets which are dirty, chaotic because it lacks enforced laws like cleanliness, parking, toilets, decor. So it encourages loads of people to leave farming for trading in the city and then it destroys incentives for scale and sophistication.

Illegal trading is the next step after primitive markets which then destroys profits further. Why rent a storefront when you can sell in a barrow or on your head?

Meanwhile labor costs remain high because you empower the poor to be primitive capitalists rather than cheap labor for bigger capital.

This is why Lagos looks nothing like Johannesburg. Johannesburg has over 1,000 supermarkets because of commercial laws while in Lagos even the maiguards wife can be selling on a table in the corner with no calculator or cash register.

South Africa produces massive companies like Shoprite, Pep Stores, Game while Okafor and Sons 30 years later is still at a 10x10 in Main Market.

Regarding Onitsha, with all that massive trade going on you would expect to see massive Costco and Walmart size businesses but how can a large scale retailer compete with all his costs against the street?

They need to regulate commercial business to the formal otherwise we will remain primitive.

Truth is that you people who are not in the health sector will always count small private hospitals with total bed capacity of 50 as a "Hospital" that should be serving a city of 1 million people. Just accident involving one Luxurious bus alone with 70 passengers, and there is no bed space to treat the injured in the entire city. Not to mention that specialized orthopedic equipment and qualified surgeons are needed to align the bones back in place.

I said ONITSHA is the ONLY city of its size in Nigeria (approx. 1 million residents) without a public hospital. Go and check it for yourself! There is NO city in Nigeria between 750,000 - 1 million without a Teaching Hospital or Federal medical center. Cities as Aba, Enugu,Abakaliki, Owerri,Umuahia, Awka, Ibadan, Asaba,Benin city, Kano,Kaduna, Bauchi,Jos, Makurdi,Maiduguri, Minna, Ilorin,Port harcourt, Akure, Uyo, not to mention Lagos and Abuja. All these cities have a Federal Medical Center or a Teaching Hospital to cater for the health of citizens.

You started naming private hospitals such as Borromeo, Iyi-enu, Toronto hospital, Menax hospital and even the hospitals as far away as Nnewi and Awka. If your child suddenly has severe asthmatic attack in the night, you will leave all the hospitals in Onitsha and drive to Awka and Nnewi to get help abi?

Keep deceiving yourself.

I just thank Obiano that he is finally doing something about quality healthcare in Onitsha. Most of you are too emotionally blinded to see that if two keke napep had accident with fracture of 10 people in Onitsha, there were not adequate orthopedic bed space in Onitsha to handle their treatment competently. yet, Aba that you will like to laugh at has that capacity at Abia State University Teaching Hospital deliberately sited in the city to help provide expert care for the residents.

You are not making any sense. Onitsha has more government hospitals more than any city of its size and population.

1. Waterside hospital

2. Borromew hospital

3. General hospital that has been upgraded to a specialist hospital.

Stop deceiving yourself here and focus more attention in your Abia state that needs your help more than any state in Nigeria.

Again oremI22 whatever you call yourself, stop comparing our facilities with the one in your dead state because Anambra has the largest health facilities scattered all the the zones of the state. Awka has ANSUTH, Nnewi has NAUTH, Onitsha has Waterside, Borromew, General hospital(Specialist), among several worthclass health facilities owned by the private in the state. There is no state in the SE that has half the number of health institutions in Anambra if we start the comparison.

Look at the virgin land where whatever you think you want to do can be done without too much thoughts to it. We are really not doing the right thing in this part of the world. You will still see people going there to develop real estates that are very close to the major roads. We need to correct these mistakes.

Anambra certainly has the potential to generate a lot more in IGR, but many of you overhype its clout. Rivers, Ogun, Kano, and even our neighbors Delta are bigger economies than Anambra. Stop the claim that Anambra is "2nd to Lagos" with no statistics to back it up.

Even the onitsha market is bigger than benin city. I do not understand how the IGR of edo state is bigger than anambra state IGR. Someone is not saying the truth or our tax system is really whack.

You are not from Anambra, so you cannot tell me what is in my state. Go to your Abia state and do that. You cannot come here to misinform the people when your Abia state is in a mess.

In Anambra, govt health facilities were handed over to the missions and are being sponsored and given grants by the state government. The same thing is happening in our schools, govt handed over all the schools to the mission and kept funding them.

- Waterside Hospital - Government/Catholic Mission Hospital
- Borromeo Hospital - Government/Catholic Mission Hospital
- Iyi-Enu Hospital - Government/Anglican Mission Hospital
- Onitsha general hospital - Government

This is how govt and mission run schools and health facilities in Anambra. It is Anambra model that has worked from the time of Peter Obi and now Obiano. All the mission schools/health is funded by the government, this started when the government handed over these institutions to the mission. In Anambra there mission institutions are also government institution because it is the govt that funds it. Stop coming here all the time to re-write our story.

Stop fooling yourself this old useless man. Can you say that Anambra does not have a state teaching hospital or a federal teaching hospital? NO. Anambra has both and it serves the state, whether it is in Onitsha or Awka or Nnewi, the important thing is that it serves the people of the state. Or are you saying that they should build another teaching hospital in all the cities even when two are already existing. How many do you have in your useless state compare to Anambra? Dumb clown. Stop yapping rubbish as if there are no state university teaching hospitals, because we have got it. So shut up and get lost old man.

I got you 100%
Apart from Toronto, Borromeow, Waterside and Iyienu which are private hospitals, Onitsha does not have public hospital. Onitsha General Hospital was like a poultry pen and there is neither a teaching hospital nor an FMC with the city limit. If i had gotten the needed warchest to invest in Onitsha with the feasibility studies i have done, a university, a shopping mall and a hospital/ hotel with recreational facilities will be given serious consideration. I surveyed Awada, Ugwuagba, ibollo Obosi areas. A place that can be accessible via both Ezeiweka and Obosi Road connecting through Obosi flyover along Onitsha - Owerri Expressway.
That corner is a forgotten business goldmine waiting to be explored. if ANSG can expand EzeIweka and connect it with Obosi Road, that area will develop with lots of businesses moving there.

Why is it that house owners in anambra state only paint their houses just after construction of the structure. What will it take them to paint these houses at least every two years? More so, the color of the paints are always dull. They could get some examples from other areas and paint their homes to have a better aesthetic look. I wish we can pay attention to details in the state and make it more livable than it is.
