The National Association of Nigerian Traders on Monday stormed the Economic Community of West African States’ secretariat located in Abuja to protest the alleged closure of shops belonging to Nigerians in Ghana.

The protest, which began at about 9:30am, partially paralysed activities at the ECOWAS Secretariat.

The protesters marched through the streets of Yakubu Gowon Way in Asokoro, a development that led to traffic gridlock in the area.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such as: ‘We need ECOWAS intervention’, ‘Ghana, re-open Nigeria’s shops now’, ‘ECOWAS, the situation in Ghana is totally unacceptable’, and ‘Ghana wants AfCTA secretariat but clamps down on African traders’, among others.

Speaking during the protest, the President, NANT, Ken Ukaoha, said that the association was protesting the alleged victimisation of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana.

He stated that the development had got so bad that a law was recently passed by the Ghanaian parliament seeking to make the business environment hostile to foreign investors.

Ukaoha said since Ghana was a signatory to the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of goods and services, there was a need for the commission to caution the government of Ghana.

They don't want foreigners doing retail. It applies to all nationals. Import to Ghana but leave small scale business for Ghanaians, how hard can that be? Serious Governments implement such laws . It's in place in Kenya, Rwanda etc. No retail business for foreigners, deal with it!!
Way to go Ghana cool

Keep your lawlessness to your country. Your leaders have refused to look out for their citizens, don't blame Ghana for that.. The other day a boy was asking/planning to go to Accra to do mai chai by the roadside. Ridiculous. I must travel by force to go pollute countries trying to better themselves. Please I applaud Ghanaian govt . If you have no money for wholesale and bulk importing, come back home let's vote in the right people and make Nigeria great.

If our visionless and useless leaders didn't raped Nigeria to coma, I see no reasons why any Nigerian would want to travelled out to start a business in any of the African countries.
Non of them match Nigeria in terms of Resources, may God judge all past and present Nigerian leaders.

More like Ghana shuts down Igbo businesses, knowing fully well that the Nigerian Government will not respond. These are some of the reasons why they will keep on agitating for a sovereign nation if not for any reason ,but for protectionism(retaliation),sadly enough the Nigerian Government has not addressed this dimension of the agitation.

All thanks to the bad leadership, Nigeria has now become like a cancer no nation what to have anything with. I wish the same fate is extended to the real causes of the problems "politicians". But no, everyone needs their money.

Ghana is just placing her citizens first. Not like Nigeria that allow Indians, Chinese to do all what not. But the way, the table has turned. Nigeria must go!

It is very unfortunate that Nigerians are treated like this outside the borders of thier country while those from the same country living here, are living like kings and queens with no form of resident permit and all the other things they ask from us in thier own country ..SMH

Funny you. You people just type finish from your rooms and sadly some uninformed people are bound to believe you.

Have you been to Ghana? How did you arrive at your conclusion that it's only Igbos affected? Do you know the ratio of Igbo , Yoruba and other Nigerian tribes doing business in Ghana?

Yes! cut gas supply, Ghana has been owing Nigeria for gas Nigeria supplied. running into billions, Nigeria will use that as a reason to cut off the supply until payment is made.

Nigeria will also take Ghana to court to force them to pay their debts.

Yes, impose high taxes and tariff, Ghana needs Nigeria far more than Nigeria needs Ghana. They need are market due to our large population.

Nigeria should also prohibit Nigerians from going to study in Ghana, cut that forex going to Ghana.

if we have a booming economy, Ghana will be begging ud to come trade in their country o, but I think their policy is about small scale business, there will be no problem with import and export. allow their citizens to enjoy monopoly, come and meet ur Nigeria leaders to make d economy favourable and u won't be experiencing all these nonsense.

Ghanaians are full of jealousy and hatred against innocent Nigerians that doing their legitimate businesses, Nigerian govt and ECOWAS needs to act fast to caution Ghanaian govt on economic aggression because it may later turn physical attacks against Nigerian residents in Ghana.

In Africa we're not yet ready free economic activities.

Now imagine UK shutting out Asians from retail or USA shutting out Asians/Chinese from retail.
