So what is the point of this free trade agreement they were signing last time?

Under ECOWAS rules, it should be clearly stated what economic activities are open to citizens of another country in another ECOWAS country and which a sovereign state can restrict or outright prohibit.

That way people going to another country to do business will know what's allowed there.

If a Ghanian cannot open a mobile phone accessories shop in Nigeria and a Nigerian cannot open a car spare parts shop in The Gambia, it should be clear from the beginning. It's all appear nebulous at the moment.

Is it only Nigerian businesses that were shut down? Do we have same scenario with other neighboring countries?

I’m aware that Ghana has always insisted on its people handling retail businesses, and have laws that insists their people must co-own foreign businesses. This is always a good opportunity to explore but with a good legal framework to avoid stories that touch in the near future.

I’m also aware that some of our people can be very excessive as have been reported repeatedly in the face of laid down rules (in Ghana), just like we practice here in Nigeria.

In all, it is a known fact that Ghana protects the interests of its people hence its very patriotic people. Nigeria should do the same too!

Maol:
The National Association of Nigerian Traders on Monday stormed the Economic Community of West African States’ secretariat located in Abuja to protest the alleged closure of shops belonging to Nigerians in Ghana.

The protest, which began at about 9:30am, partially paralysed activities at the ECOWAS Secretariat.

The protesters marched through the streets of Yakubu Gowon Way in Asokoro, a development that led to traffic gridlock in the area.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such as: ‘We need ECOWAS intervention’, ‘Ghana, re-open Nigeria’s shops now’, ‘ECOWAS, the situation in Ghana is totally unacceptable’, and ‘Ghana wants AfCTA secretariat but clamps down on African traders’, among others.

Speaking during the protest, the President, NANT, Ken Ukaoha, said that the association was protesting the alleged victimisation of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana.

He stated that the development had got so bad that a law was recently passed by the Ghanaian parliament seeking to make the business environment hostile to foreign investors.

Ukaoha said since Ghana was a signatory to the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of goods and services, there was a need for the commission to caution the government of Ghana.

Funny you. You people just type finish from your rooms and sadly some uninformed people are bound to believe you.

Have you been to Ghana? How did you arrive at your conclusion that it's only Igbos affected? Do you know the ratio of Igbo , Yoruba and other Nigerian tribes doing business in Ghana?

The guy might have not been to Ghana, those of us who know Accra understand what he is saying. The Ghanaians understand Nigeria composition & our orientations very well.

If Lagos were to be under another country, what is happening in South Africa & Ghana would have taken place in Lagos.

we should thank God if Ghanaians eventually decided not to pay us back in our coin by sending us away in a more polite manner.

They don't want foreigners doing retail. It applies to all nationals. Import to Ghana but leave small scale business for Ghanaians, how hard can that be? Serious Governments implement such laws . It's in place in Kenya, Rwanda etc. No retail business for foreigners, deal with it!!
Way to go Ghana cool

Keep your lawlessness to your country. Your leaders have refused to look out for their citizens, don't blame Ghana for that.. The other day a boy was asking/planning to go to Accra to do mai chai by the roadside. Ridiculous. I must travel by force to go pollute countries trying to better themselves. Please I applaud Ghanaian govt . If you have no money for wholesale and bulk importing, come back home let's vote in the right people and make Nigeria great.
you have just shown this forum how senseless you really are.who told you that in a free economy, foreigners are restricted in doing some businesses?
Most of the big businesses we have today in the US are owned by foreigners who started small in the streets.
Continue fooling yourself.
Ghana is just a backward country with foolish policies.

Yes! cut gas supply, Ghana has been owing Nigeria for gas Nigeria supplied. running into billions, Nigeria will use that as a reason to cut off the supply until payment is made.

Nigeria will also take Ghana to court to force them to pay their debts.

Yes, impose high taxes and tariff, Ghana needs Nigeria far more than Nigeria needs Ghana. They need are market due to our large population.

Nigeria should also prohibit Nigerians from going to study in Ghana, cut that forex going to Ghana.
Just in case you don't know
Nigeria can't afford to cut gas supply to Ghana
that is why Nigeria sent a lobbyist to Ghana when Ghana threaten to dump Nigeria gas in favour of gas from Equatorial Guinea.

Stop this kind of talk... Are you trying to tell me that your fellow African who's trying to make like 1000 GHC should be allowed to suffer?

This is the wickedness that has been sowed in our hearts by the West. The big malls which sell imported produce are busy carting billions out of the Ghanaian economy everyday. 80% of the products in those malls are imported and the government is not making sure that locals are allowed to supply the malls with local farm produce..

What the average Nigerian is making in the retail sector is highly insignificant. They need that little money to survive in the hard economy.

Have you wondered how Africans go to other western countries for education purposes but the government makes sure they're able to work for some hours an make little money? The Ghanaian government doesn't make such provisions readily available for other African brothers.

We need to change our mindset as Africans.

Great you know that we need to change our mindset as Africans
Can we please get the Nigerian government to throw away it stupid import ban list as well as it restrictions on Ghanaian business trying to enter the Nigerian market

Anytime its about Nigeria, you see Ghanaians develop virtual muscles grin grin grin. Don't be a racist! The retail sector which you're trying to protect is actually not protected. Stop calking your fellow Africans morons. We have Ghanaians in Europe, USA, CHina e.t.c doing business and nobody is hunting them down.

The 7 banks which collapsed in Ghana was due to the mismanagement by Ghanaians who are expected to protect the public sector. How many foreign banks collapsed? None! The earlier we realise that as Africans we need each other the better for us all.
oh Ghana knows that we need each other as Africans
Ghana just want Nigeria to remove its import ban list as well as the restrictions it has on Ghanaian businesses trying to get their produce into Nigeria

Do you know who investors are ?

These people are no investors, they are engaged in retail trading which is the preserve of Ghanaians . Don’t get confused.

You morons keep saying , when you pull out Ghana would collapse , it’s the profit you are making out of Ghana that would collapse.

Anyway, they want you to get out.

If they pull out of Ghana, it will affect the economy because economic activities in the country would reduce to be honest with you. You might have to do a little research on economic activities/money circulation in a country and how the GDP of a country is calculated. You are looking down on retail trading forgetting that the pple there will spend the profit there in the country. They will rent houses, send Children to school etc. See Walmart Store (a retail store) in the US is one of the companies with the highest revenue in the world. You cant downgrade retail trading in a country.
Even at present Ghana economy is declining and that means there is trouble in the country. I quite understand the idea of protecting local businesses but the Ghana Govt. can tax the shop owners there and thru dat the Govt. would make money. Infact I believe there are some monies those shop owners would be paying the Govt. To me the Govt. of Ghana would have to be wise. The time to increase the economic activities of the country is now. They need to be wise

Mate, it would have been nice if Ghanaian were even competitive or taking these retails or whatever, no they are not. These people aren't savvy at all. I have been living in this country off and on. Their work ethic is the worst that I have seen so far. You literally have to push them, even if you are paying. They find the smallest excuse not to be productive. Lateness over here is something I worry about, I know this most an African thing, but Ghana takes it to another level entirely.
You do yourself a great disservice if you pay a Ghanaian before doing your job for you.
I have seen a few of them who are good too. They understand the importance of business and they don't mess about. But the general work ethic is next to zero!

I wanted to start a company in Ghana, this company would have kicked off with initial capital close to 100k USD but they told me the smallest capital required for foreigners is 500k USD! And you have to pay some duties that will be about 50k USD, I knew this was one of the reasons the country ain't developing that fast , considering Ghana has a fairly stable democracy. They aren't investor friendly at all. It is not as if the Govt is providing loans for Ghanaians to start businesses, no way.

Just so you know, with 250k USD you can invest in Turkey and get a citizenship!
