JUST IN: The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen TY Buratai briefed the C-in-C yesterday 21 September 2018 on the Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency efforts in the North East. The C-in-C was impressed with the decisive response of the COAS to the initial setbacks in the North East. The C-in-C also commended the troops efforts in dealing with the bandits in the North West especially Zamfara State. The COAS seized the opportunity to pledge the unalloyed loyalty of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army to the C-in-C. He also assured Mr President of the Nigerian Army's resolve to continuously protect the territorial integrity of the country as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Why is the COAS briefing the CIC instead of the CDS?

Definitely the CDS would be briefed time to time on the N.E operations updates but tough times deserves you oversee & hear through the horse mouth.

I think that's water Mr president is doing.

We as a society will remain stagnant if we keep making excuses for corruption and in competence. Frankly m Nigeria is not TOGO. A country like Nigeria can fix problems of basic amenities and modernise at the same time. Why is providing basic amenities an issue? Isn't that by default what ever service does? What's all this crap about funding. A nation that can spend $300 million in two monthe playing big brother can as well rescue its air force from extinction. You talk as if Nigeria is a 3rd rate backwater underdeveloped nation. This is virtually no excuse for the state of our air force. Nigeria is in the league ofmEgypt, Morroco and South Africa economically..and unlike the aforementioned countries, Nigeria has ten added advantage of having huge energy reserves , it can acquire platforms via commodities.

By virtue of its size, status, threat environment and diplomatic clout Nigeria should field squadrons of high performance jets. It doesn't hav3 to field F-16's, anything but trainer aircraft for crying out loud. It's ridiculous 8 F-7N interceptors and 16 Alpha jet forms the nucleus of Nigerian Air power.

On the economic front this is what you don't get. Nigeria is Africa's first trillion dollar economy by PPP. It holds the distinct title of richest via GNP and PPP. ...and guess what, oil accounts for less than %25 of Nigeria's overall GDP. This is the world's 19th largest economy. Why can't we do in war time what other countries are doing in peace time. Why the addiction to fire brigade approach? The $600 million Super Tucano deal has to be the dumbest arms deal in the history of the world. Before that it is the $370 million spent on 15 Chengdu F-7Ni fighters..Nigeria has since then lost three aircraft and two pilots to crashes, not to enemy fire. The failure to deal with the Boko Haram insurgency soon enough allowed external players to use the security situation as a target of opportunity and covertly keep Boko Haram afloat with cash and weapons. There is a price to pay for not being prepared. Nigeria has the capacity and wherewithal to rival the Algerian and South African Air Force, same goes for the Navy. Countries like South Africa and Algeria have submarines, they do not have to but they take the security of their waterways serious. In Nigeria's case the vast majority of Nigeria's oil terminal are offshore. Nigeria lost Bakassi to Cameroon. During the Ivory Coast debacles the Nigeria government was embarrassed when South Africa, in a show of force deployed a Frigate to the West African coast. Given the importance of the Atlantic to Nigeria's economic lifeline the Nigerian Navy should operate at least one submarine. I know there are many here who call this fantasy and are quite contended with the current state of affairs.

Lastly, it saddens me when you guys keep referring to social security challenges as an excuse for refusing to modernise and invest heavily in security. The social security problems that is bedeviling the nation is stems from a direct consequences for Nigeria's ill equipped military. If the Boko Haram insurgency have been crushed earlier in with overwhelming force there will not be a security gap that will allow external powers to manipulate. Instead we turned ourselves into a laughing stock, stashing millions of dollars in briefcases in a desperate bid to buy basic weapons the military should have had in abundance. Humiliated by the SA government, ,then we go on all fours BEGGING the United States to sell ur weapons, giving the U.S an opportunity to hold the country hostage with cheap blackmail. The sufferings and killings in the northeast, 2 million people displaced, the covert support for Boko Haram, Nigeria's waterways outstripping Somalia to the title of worlds most dangeriu waters.....they all stem from one basic dynamic, the failure of the Nigerian military to effectively protect its territory because of its ill equipped army, navy and air force. You are proposing we continue down that path, do not waste money in modernising and acquiring the platforms we need, After all we are not at war. Then when we are embarrassed again by an unforseen situation, we go through the circle again, desperately looking for weapons to buy, allowing countries tot are advantage of Nigeria's desperation to the fullest. Do you really think the United States and France would have turned West Africa into a its military warehouse had the Nigerian army been abl to lead an intervention force in Mali, and effectively crush the Boko Haram insurgency before spreading into neighbouring countries? No. We dropped the ball and as a result can no longer be viewed as the preponderant military power in West Africa.

Its crucial to see things properly before you can fix them. Imo,the bottom line is poverty which is why even with minimal leakage gov't revenues that can feed the budget are low.

Oga Ibrahimnees, how can you write Nigeria is diversified than China, Brazil and India? Nigeria is one of the most monotonous economies with a large population. Many industries are yet to be because the banks rarely borrow or the interest rates are too high. The better the country can support infrastructures for business, the more likelihood we can achieve a greater diversity of industries. Metallurgy, IT, and R&grin are some of the supporting acts for strong armies largely absent in ours for a start.

Ultimately our military ability would be linked to the economic foresight of our leaders and the ability of the armed forces chiefs to navigate and develop an appropriate approach.

If you mean Late Tafawa Balewa, he wasn't Hausa either. He's from Mage ethnicity, a small group in largely Christian Tafawa Balewa local government area in Bauchi.
I take it back. I got my facts mixed up, he's the most notable hausa politician. The then prime minister is not Hausa.

Everyone wants an advanced Nigerian military in all its facets, however, presently, we have skinnies in our backyard, between modernizing the airforce and routing out skinnies which should take priority is basic common sense for anyone that has one.

For a country that's been at war for a decade, don't you think the airframes we have need changing? How on earth does building a modern air force qualify as fantasy? Development is a fantasy and remaining in the doldrums our God given rights? It appears the humiliation and disgrace Nigeria faced in Mali, when our troops were relegated to manning checkpoints and begging for basic supplies have been forgotten. Every effort to modernise even the basic facets of air force is torpedoed with the flimsy excuse of priorities. Isn't it the priority of any sensible armed forces to maintain to combat readiness and prepare for the worst? Ten Super Tucano is a side dish and does not alter the deficit the service faces, neither does repairing helicopters and developing mini drones. We know what to do, we have the means of achieving it..but we are comfortable in managing the crap we have, same league with Cameroon sndBenin. Buy one helicopter today, super Mushank tomorrow, build drones high school students can build and celebrate it as milestone..,what a complete joke our military is becoming.

Since 2014 the Navy have been requesting for $300 million to retrofit NN S Aradu. That's a vessel with 18 Otomat missiles still in storage. Request denied. Them we spend $300 million in a show of force to beg Yahya Jammeh to step down. Another $50 million buying Augusta Westland VIP Helios. Then we expend $500 million buying Stealth Patrol vessels from China. The Chinese offer to arm the ship with Chinese anti-ship and air defence missiles. We turn down the offer. God forbid the day we are forced to defend the waterways, not from pirates but from enemy ships capable of wiping out Nigeria's oil infrastructure or creating enough damage that basically cripples the nation's economy...

..Oh wait....How dare I say such ! such a fantasy! It will never happen hete.

It's a waste of money spending such amount to refit NNS ARADU. Seriously you would spend $300million on that old cargo.

I'll rather save the money for another new vessel.. sad

CNS Bakassi is armed with Exocet missiles and 40mm cannon. Yes Nigerian patrol crafts come with 72 mm heavy pounder, but they simply lack missile attack capabilities.

Cameroons Bizerte (P48 large patrol craft) class L'Audacieux is fitted with SS-12M missile and an inordinate amount of anti-aircraft cannons. Some ships carry as much as four.

Cameroons Alpha jet can carry the Exocet anti'ship missile.

The SS-12M

This missile, which can also be fired by helicopters will do serious damage to any 1,500 ton vessel, might even sink it.

Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by Nobody: 8:59pm On Sep 26, 2018
Not long ago the Nigerian Navy fielded the most fearsome anti-ship capability in the region with 40 Otomat missiles. For good measure the missile crafts AYAM and SIRI also fielded Aspid missiles.
