SLBM: I must cut in! No-that false narrative has been thoroughly debunked here:https://www.nairaland.com/3327789/kenya-ahead-nigeria-all-aspect/2246 Its crucial to see things properly before you can fix them. Imo,the bottom line is poverty which is why even with minimal leakage gov't revenues that can feed the budget are low. |

Oga Ibrahimnees, how can you write Nigeria is diversified than China, Brazil and India? Nigeria is one of the most monotonous economies with a large population. Many industries are yet to be because the banks rarely borrow or the interest rates are too high. The better the country can support infrastructures for business, the more likelihood we can achieve a greater diversity of industries. Metallurgy, IT, and R& are some of the supporting acts for strong armies largely absent in ours for a start. Ultimately our military ability would be linked to the economic foresight of our leaders and the ability of the armed forces chiefs to navigate and develop an appropriate approach. 2 Likes |

Odunayaw: No point insulting the guy, he meant well just that he doesn't understand what priorities are, he sounds like those men that celebrate baby Owambe, buy huge igele for his wife when he hasn't paid rent. Everyone wants an advanced Nigerian military in all its facets, however, presently, we have skinnies in our backyard, between modernizing the airforce and routing out skinnies which should take priority is basic common sense for anyone that has one. 3 Likes |

jpphilips: For a country that's been at war for a decade, don't you think the airframes we have need changing? How on earth does building a modern air force qualify as fantasy? Development is a fantasy and remaining in the doldrums our God given rights? It appears the humiliation and disgrace Nigeria faced in Mali, when our troops were relegated to manning checkpoints and begging for basic supplies have been forgotten. Every effort to modernise even the basic facets of air force is torpedoed with the flimsy excuse of priorities. Isn't it the priority of any sensible armed forces to maintain to combat readiness and prepare for the worst? Ten Super Tucano is a side dish and does not alter the deficit the service faces, neither does repairing helicopters and developing mini drones. We know what to do, we have the means of achieving it..but we are comfortable in managing the crap we have, same league with Cameroon sndBenin. Buy one helicopter today, super Mushank tomorrow, build drones high school students can build and celebrate it as milestone..,what a complete joke our military is becoming. 3 Likes |

Since 2014 the Navy have been requesting for $300 million to retrofit NN S Aradu. That's a vessel with 18 Otomat missiles still in storage. Request denied. Them we spend $300 million in a show of force to beg Yahya Jammeh to step down. Another $50 million buying Augusta Westland VIP Helios. Then we expend $500 million buying Stealth Patrol vessels from China. The Chinese offer to arm the ship with Chinese anti-ship and air defence missiles. We turn down the offer. God forbid the day we are forced to defend the waterways, not from pirates but from enemy ships capable of wiping out Nigeria's oil infrastructure or creating enough damage that basically cripples the nation's economy... ..Oh wait....How dare I say such ! such a fantasy! It will never happen hete. 3 Likes |

SLBM: It's a waste of money spending such amount to refit NNS ARADU. Seriously you would spend $300million on that old cargo. I'll rather save the money for another new vessel.. 1 Like |

So you would rather the mobey wasted in the Gambia, or on vessels that have no way of protecting its crew. |

CNS Bakassi is armed with Exocet missiles and 40mm cannon. Yes Nigerian patrol crafts come with 72 mm heavy pounder, but they simply lack missile attack capabilities. Cameroons Bizerte (P48 large patrol craft) class L'Audacieux is fitted with SS-12M missile and an inordinate amount of anti-aircraft cannons. Some ships carry as much as four. Cameroons Alpha jet can carry the Exocet anti'ship missile. 1 Like

The SS-12M This missile, which can also be fired by helicopters will do serious damage to any 1,500 ton vessel, might even sink it.

Not long ago the Nigerian Navy fielded the most fearsome anti-ship capability in the region with 40 Otomat missiles. For good measure the missile crafts AYAM and SIRI also fielded Aspid missiles. 1 Like

SLBM: What am saying is I'll rather go to China or Russia to get frigates or corvette ships with that same money you want to use to refit NNS ARADU. Dude do you know what you say sometimes; whopping $300million to refit a ship that is old enough to be retired. Am sorry you must be a prodigal son. Here are some price list of naval ships; https://newwars./warship-costs/ . |
