Work on the Apapa-Wharf Concrete Road has been completed, according to a senior engineer with the AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd, contractors handling the project.

With the completion of the road, gridlock on the Apapa Road is expected to ease.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited the site on Tuesday, reports that the four-kilometre dual carriageway, built with cement, has a median, walkways and side barriers on the various sections painted in black and white.

Big drainage on both sides has also been completed while street lights have also been erected on Sections one and four of the project.

Interlocking stones are still being laid on about three-quarter of the service lane of out-bound Apapa dual carriageway.

Section one of the project is 520 metres, section two is 450 metres, three is 380 while section four is 650 metres.

The engineer, who did not want his name mentioned, said the concrete road needed to undergo “curing” for a period of time before the road could be opened to traffic, adding that the various sections had different curing periods.

Curing process is the number of days required for concrete to gain enough strength for durability.

He told NAN:“We have completed concrete works on all the four sections. We have also finished work on this Eleganza Roundabout and we are linking the rigid pavement to connecting roads.

“We are only waiting for some sections to `cure’. Curing takes 28 days, some sections have cured but this Eleganza roundabout and some other small portions are still undergoing curing.

“ Concrete on the road is 100 per cent completed and we have started erecting the street lights.

“Section four is the longest of about 650 metres and it has cured completely, all other portions have cured except this roundabout area.

“We are screeding and painting the median barriers and sidewalks at the same time. Screeding is like applying POP or dressing on a surface to make it smooth for painting.

“This project would have been completed but we did not expect the amount of rainfall that came in this month of September.

“Although the rain is not an excuse, but it is disturbing us.”

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, had on June 17, 2017 signed a N4.34 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd and some other stakeholders for reconstructing the Apapa-Wharf Road.

The project is being funded by AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc. (NAN)

Well-done MR Fashola for signing a good deal.... I feel this road should be demacated, trailers should have their own lane and maintenance should be routine.... God bless Nigeria

Quite impressive but this still doesn’t give Dangote (and other) trucks the leeway to park on major roads in Lagos indiscriminately, causing traffic and myriads of problem for other road users.

It’s actually a good thing that the road has been fixed but for those who think this is a Father Christmas gesture, please have a rethink. Dangote is going to be getting heavy tax concessions for this, it’s not entirely a CSR project, it is more of a do the road with your money and you will get future tax cuts to cover the cost.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very good development that the road has been fixed but it comes at a cost.

How durable are concrete roads?
Please I'm just asking o

From https://www.quora.com/Is-a-concrete-road-better-than-a-tar-road

There is a purpose for concrete roads and a purpose for asphalt roads. Sometimes, the purpose is overlapping and either one will do.

Concrete roads will provide longer durability, if built correctly, with less maintenance requirements than asphalt. Concrete generally costs more per square yard than asphalt, because you need a thicker pavement section as well as reinforcement.

Concrete pavement cannot be driven on right away. The concrete must be allowed to cure and gain strength over time before vehicles may drive over it. If you have a situation where traffic needs to get on the road quickly, asphalt is a better choice. Asphalt can be placed the same day that traffic is put on it.

It takes a long distance to get efficient production with concrete pavement.

It is more expensive to use concrete in miscellaneous areas with odd shapes than asphalt. It is not good to have tight corner shapes on concrete, or it will crack where you don’t want it to. Asphalt can be placed in various shapes and is flexible so it shouldn’t crack.

Once you place concrete, you really don’t want to tear it out unless you have to. In urban areas, underground utilities are located under the roadway.

These utilities often need to be maintained or replaced. With asphalt, you can easily open up a trench, maintain or repair the utility, and close the trench back up. This is not so easy with concrete.

Asphalt pavement is flexible, which can be better in some situations. For example, a track that is made of rubberized asphalt is a better running surface than a concrete track. Concrete has greater impact on your body.

These are just a few things to consider when placing asphalt versus concrete

I hope the didn't do shoddy work

Very expensive, concrete roads.

Ought to last longer than asphalt roads but this is Nigeria.

A couple of Burning tankers will rearrange its destiny.

It is very durable, if you have been to one port complex you would see it first hand.

By the way, they should complete the inter locks on both sides of the road.

And what actually just happened is that dangote built himself a new trailer park.

Before u quote me, ijesha to coconut is the new trailer park approved by the Lagos state government.

For this reason only, Ambrose should leave that seat
