Rent in Vancouver downtown is very expensive, it's the most expensive in Canada I guess but then people are staying downtown still , So you can stay downtown if you can afford it. But I suggest you look for house at places like Burnaby it's 20 mins from downtown cool place, also South Vancouver, East Vancouver, Richmond and kitsilano all these places are less expensive than downtown but houses are expensive still. Metro Vancouver is generally expensive city to start life. You can get a place in Surrey its a bit far from downtown,40-45mins, its relatively cheaper area to live, this is where you find alot of blacks , Nigerians , somalians with Indians and others .More than half of the population in Vancouver are Asians especially Chinese ,we got also Koreans , phillipinos and Punjabis. It's a beautiful place with lots of nature, mountains for hiking, lakes, Islands and beaches.It a slow pace city compare to Toronto.
But lots of blacks especially Nigerians like places like Toronto , Edmonton ,Calgary where they can hussle and make and save money.

Winnipeg! Winnipeg is the main city in MB. Then other smaller cities with population size lesser than Akure sef - Brandon, Portage la Priarie, Gimli.. forget Telecom, engineering for those areas.
Do yourself a favor by checking out Indeed.ca. It's a major job website. Search by Province and the job title, to get a good idea of the job descriptions and how many postings roughly exist. That should help.

The course will take place on a Saturday and it will take 4 hours. You will learn the basic Lean Six Sigma tools and the basics of Lean Six Sigma to enable you decide if it is something you want to do to boost your existing career or to jump start your career in Canada.

In order for me to do this and for it to be worth my time and effort there has to be minimum of 3 people interested in taking the course. When we get the required minimum number of people we can use one of the libraries in Calgary as the venue of the course. I know that some libraries in Calgary have meeting rooms that they give out free of charge for this type of community support activity. So, we can take advantage of that.

If we have more interest than the meeting room can take, I am willing to have multiple sessions to accommodate all interested Nairalanders. If you are not in Calgary but willing to come to Calgary for the session you are also welcome to attend.

The only two things I am asking for in return for this free course are:
1. For you to also help other people succeed free of charge in any capacity you may have. Let the circle of help continue.

You need the Nigerian drivers license. The International one doesn't count.

Waoo,interesting. Which part of Ontario are you? What did you now use for yourself and wife?Abi you bone am?Lol

I'd like to share some tips and my answers to some of the qtns answered below. My guess is "oohunt" may be in Cana already by now. I hope my answers help others.
Here we go...
1. Landed at the airport: I landed in Toronto. Went thru immigration here, got our landing papers after maybe 1 or 2 questions. Got in on a weekend, little to no queue. Then headed to Winnipeg from TO. We got our bags in TO, and rechecked them in. Some flights may take your bags all the way to final destination, wtout having to go thru the trouble of rechecking them in. No hassles though, all pretty much automated to get the bags checked back in, except you have oversized luggage.
2. Immigratn rules to follow... not sure I get the exact qtn. Be sure you have no contrabands. Fill the declaration card while on d plane. B truthful.
3. * How do you carry all that cash with you? For example: a family of 5 will need $25,923. There was issue getting FX when I left Naija, so dint have too much cash on me. I got them moved in bits myself and by others later. If you are coming in with this much, declare it on the declaration card u get on the plane. Canada needs d dough for the economy to keep growing, that's one of the reasons for the immigrant programs, so don't think they don't want your money in here. They are happy u r bringing it in. Get a good bank once u get in to open your acct. I use Scotia and RBC. Any good bank shld suffice. Just look out for one that doesn't charge you monthly fees to using their bank.
4. Chose Manitoba. Winnipeg. We considered TO, Calgary, and Wpg. Chose Winnipeg because I did not want the largest city and the hassles of traffic. Suffered that a lot in Lagos, and stand traffic, and I was looking out for a province that is somewhere in btwn, is good for a young family, jobs available in my chosen profession also. As an added bonus, I have family connection here also.
5. No major complaints. Winnipeg is really cold, and you have to just find ways to deal with it, and live your best life. on the +ve side, some days, very few times... lol... when Toronto, GTA area gets with blizzards (really bad snowfall), and flooding, Winnipeg is laughing that we are spared. So all cities have their up and downsides. Daycare is another major problem in Canada, spots are usually limited. From personal experience, if u can start your search early on this one, right when u land, while u r searching for a job also, that would be good for u. I searched thru kijiji.ca., and online childcare Manitoba (the govt website for childcare). And don't go to those who don't give receipts, they may be cheaper, just don't, so would be cheating yourself, and not get the tax refunds for daycare when tax season comes. You can also get childcare subsidy if you are unemployed or going to school.

You'd need to read and shop around for best interest rates really.
Mehn the question for this your post plenty, cannot be answered at once. I share some of my experiences on my blog, so one or two lessons on there, may be helpful. Thriveonyourjourney.
6. I landed with a 5mth old baby. Started daycare when he was abt 10mths. Attended govt sponsored French language classes for a while before getting my job. Usually, maternity is 1year in Canada. In Manitoba, not sure what applies in other provs, u'd be paid abt 55% of your pay as Employmnt Insurance if u were employed and working here before the mat leave, and this was not my case. Finding daycare below 1year old is even tougher, u just keep searching and one will come. Join waiting list for good daycares as well.
Kindergarten starts at 5yrs. Public schools free. Private at a cost. Public schools are usually by Division, so kids attend school in their area, u get. Those living in Ajah, go to school in Ajah LG, and those in Ikeja, go to Ikeja LG school. So , u'd find out which school caters to your area.
Most places in Winnipeg are safe, except North end and Downtown. Downtown after 5pm is like a ghost town. So once offices close, and pple don go house, its mainly folks that are around there, cos they have housing around there, and some refugee housing also. So people typically avoid there when it's late. Let's just say its more prone to crime.
7. With hubby being in Naija, and mother and kids here. It's doable, may just be tough. Cos getting kids in n out of schl, cold weather, that physical and moral support is key. Some folks here have hubby n wife in diff provinces cos of work. So again, its doable, just tough. and u do what u gat to do.
8. Culture shock dey. From terms things are called to many other things. water is hydro. Takeaway is to-go. Oyinbo sef dey wear "bozcorner", thrift store. Recruitment process bias. Just keep an open mind, and talk abt your work in good light, once u can get a foot in the door.
9. Dressing and coping in winter... THis I cannot overemphasis, especially for Winnipeg harsh winter. Dress warm. Cover all coverables. Oyinbo invest well in quality jackets, boots, hats, mittens, neck scarves. Different thickness and grades dey. Don't bother wasting money in naija saying u r going looking for a good jacket for Canada no go work. If u r lucky to land in warmer months. just shop for good quality jackets when u get here. and the most expensive doesn't always mean best quality. I landed in when it was cold, November, so one jacket I hold from naija did like 2 days work, and I was out to look for a good one, and good boots. Compare prices online also, and be on the lookout for deals. Stores like Carters, Children place, gap carry good kids jackets, just watch for sale. Kamik, Sorel make good boots.
10. I know of Naija stores in Winnipeg, that carry local supplies. like elubo, garri, n co. I mainly make my meals at home. and have a good naija food supplies to last a while.

12. Monthly budget varies from fam to fam. Think of major costs as rent, groceries, car payment if you have a car loan, daycare fees. Others are hydro, tfare, what else, shopping for cloth n others. One off major cost would be when furnishing your home or apartment.

In addition, take advantage of the welcome centers for newcomers in your province. This helps.

And don't settle for the hogwash say u no get Canadian experience. Some people find jobs within 2-3mths, others 8moths, others their desired job takes 4 years to get. keep your eyes on your goals. Be flexible also, by identifying your skill gaps, and finding ways to up your game. Company you keep here matters also. Join the go-getters gang, or join the settlers gang, your choice.

My plan is to conduct one session every month depending on the number of interested people and meeting room availability in any of the libraries in Calgary.

It looks like we now have three people (@linuslynx, @dfanz and @chuka01) that are interested in the Six Sigma crash course already. Since linuslynx will not be landing until December, we can schedule the first session for after @linuslynx lands in Calgary in December. However, if there is more interest before December, I will schedule the first session before December (in October or November) as long as we can get a meeting room at the library. So, the actual session dates each month will be determined by meeting room availability each month.

The job prospect for an Engineer with Lean Six Sigma certification at the minimum Black Belt level was excellent about 10-15 years ago when I ventured into it. While currently, the prospect may not be excellent but it is still VERY GOOD and I would advice you to consider it as an Engineer. Stock fishes and dry fishes are allowed but Palm Oil is not... You may bother less about Palm Oil tho as they are readily available in the African stores around at fairly affordable prices.. say %L for about !5-25 bucks based on Ontario rate... Other provinces' rates may differ.

Best way to pack your fish may just be to put them inside of your garri or wrap them in newspaper and then tie them in nylon bags...

Hello fellow Afro-Canadians, kindly advise please.

I have a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree from Nigeria and I practised as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (3 years) and Biomedical Scientist (1 year) in Nigeria and UK respectively.

I got a MSc degree from the UK in Environmental and Public Health with little knowledge of public health practice compared to my extensive experience in medical laboratory science.

My NOC is Medical Laboratory Technologist and I will need to get certification to practice as one in Canada which can take 1 - 2 years.

Is there possibility of getting job with Public Health agency in Canada with my degrees, what are the things I need to consider and where is the best place/websites to search for public health jobs because they are mostly government jobs? Also, how can I explore international NGO and organizations jobs such as WHO, UNICEF etc in Canada.

Expecting to land in November by God's grace and more questions come concerning family life.

Landed Edmonton yesterday night...

Left for Abuja airport by 9.30am, my flight was by 1.27pm via Ethiopian Airline. 2 adults, 2 infants.... Planned to carry 5 luggage of 23kg each and the rest as hand luggage, although I was entitled to 4 pics of 23kg and 2 pcs of 10kg... Already weighed my luggage with a gas sellers scale (those guys dey reap people off) and all my bags were overweight almost 28kg... Just said I'll take them like that and see how it goes at the airport.. At the airport discovered that none of my luggages was even up to 23kg!! Had to include some of my hand luggage as check-in. So in total 6 bags of all twenty-something kg.

The flight from Abuja to Ethiopia was good, not great food but twas constant... Had an empty seat by our side so we maximized the space... In-flight Entertainment was good, just that my son (1yr 11months) was a hands full... Dreaded the takeoff & landing and was running temp....

Arrived Ethiopia and boarded the one that's bound for Toronto via Dublin... The crew were very nice, changed my seat to one where I could use a bassinet (twas a life saver) they provided . Didn't know what a bassinet was but just responded positive when asked if I'll like to have one..lol. my 5 months infant was placed there so at least my wife had some space and that made the entire space in front of us ours, so we just converted it to a bed, na so my wife and 1st son lie down for ground there like say we dey "economic bizness class". After boarding, the flight was about to take off but just didn't go, we were later told there were some technical issues, na so we dey inside for more than 2 hrs for a flight that we will spend more than 15hrs on....

Finally we landed Toronto safely and I was completely EXHAUSTED.... I just couldn't fill all the forms I printed earlier to make the landing faster..... I just filled the declaration card we were given on the plane.... Traveling that distance with 2yrs old is enough stress on its own. Went straight to one of the officers I was directed to by one warri boy (he introduced himself and I said I be phc boy...lol) that works in the airport there, too exhausted to even know her position.. She asked if any accompanying goods, I said no, she just ruled my card and directed us to immigration.... Queue wast much, got to my turn and I just said I came for landing, presented our visas and copr, was asked how much cash I was with and I said 4000usd. We were asked to wait for our paperwork to be completed... After about 10mins we were called and asked some statoury questions like have you been convicted of any crime blah blah blah.... We provided our house address(already signed a 1yr lease for an apartment)., signed our copr, guess the agent was new cos she was asking her colleagues who should sign for the infants (PA or mother). After which we were told "welcome to Canada ". Purposely planned to miss my connecting flight cos twas another more than 4hr flight to Edmonton...so I went and processed our SIN numbers, claimed our luggages and proceeded to Air Canada where we we're rebooked, checked in our bags, grabbed something to bite....finally boarded after about 2hrs.... My son was still showing working by his constant crying.... Everybody around us offered assistance, they gave him color books, drinks, showed him cartoons on their phones, they were generally nice... Another grandparents loved the smaller boy (we couldn't get close seats) that stayed with us @ the airport when we arrived, introduced us to their children who we ended up having coffee with before they left... One of our bags was didn't come to Edmonton with us. They promised to deliver it to my house this morning, so I gave my sisters address instead since Im yet to move in......finally my in-law came and we drove home.

I remember reading landing gists on this thread, and wondering when I will write my own....

All in all, while leaving the airport,i just had a fear of this is for real, now the real WORK starts then it just dawned on me God's faithfulness to me and I realized that my AOR (JULY 3RD) to Landing (SEPT 28)was less than 3 months.....then I became confident again that that

Landed Edmonton yesterday night...
