Is it one or two aircraft? There's a tweet that implies it was a mid-air collision. |

ssaengine:2 Aircrafts, however it's currently know that at-least 1 FT-7NI has been lost. A senior pilot is also dead. The identity of the second aircraft is not yet known. 1 Like |

UPDATE ON AIR INCIDENT INVOLVING 2 NIGERIAN AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) F-7Ni aircraft taking part in the rehearsals for the aerial display to mark Nigeria’s 58th Independence Anniversary Celebrations were involved in an air incident today, 28 September 2018. The air mishap necessitated the 3 pilots to eject from their aircraft, which subsequently crashed in the general area of Katamkpe Hill. Regrettably, however, one of them later died due to complications from injuries sustained upon impact on the ground. Thankfully, there were no civilian casualties. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on behalf of officers, airmen and airwomen of the NAF, commiserates with the family of the deceased officer. The CAS has also instituted an air crash investigation to determine the remote and immediate causes of the incident. I rarely respond to ignorant posts about NAF AND Accidents The UK DEFENCE JOURNAL has just announced that the ultra modern 5th GEN F35B has just witnessed its first accident the pilot ejected in SOUTH CAROLINA , USA no reports on his status. We pray for him him just like we pray for all NAF Pilots and we wait for a full investigation before we speculate ...... because it is the sensible thing to do. ukdefencejournal.org.uk |

Air Marshal Abubakar @CAS_AMSadique · 1h It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with officers, airmen and airwomen of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) over the unfortunate incident involving 2 F-7Ni aircraft earlier today. The aircraft were flown by 3 of the most skilled and experienced pilots on the aircraft-type. 2.They had indeed been programmed for training on a higher performance aircraft that the NAF is about to acquire. All 3 were able to eject from the aircraft before the crash. Regrettably, however, one of them later died due complications from injuries sustained from the ejection. 4. @NigAirForce , which has flown over 30,000 hours in the Northeast in the last one year, will painstakingly investigate the cause of the accident in order to avoid a reoccurrence.

Henry240: But why are you surprised? You already gave your comments on what you think about Denel during that "top 100 defence companies debate". So what is a " company like Denel"? In the past 18 months Denel had been virtually run to the ground financially by a corrupt board, under the direct influence of the ________ brothers and _______. Luckily that board has been removed, and changes are being made. It will take many more months for Denel to recover to a positive position. Meanwhile people are being retrenched and some staff short paid. But there is light at the end of the tunnel with upcoming procurements and/or deals which have yet to be announced publicly. |

ssaengine:These Gupta guys, who really are they? South-Africans or foreigners? How come they would so much influence in RSA? The defence industry is quite tricky, that's why it's doubly important for arms manufacturers to also deal in civilian items. US government contracts and US government defence aide are very important for American defence companies to thrive. A company like Denel which i assume only deals in arms needs to diversify product line irrespective of the influence of outsiders. Besides this is not the first time Denel has been hit by financial trouble. At the bolded, i really miss the times i had the freedom to engage you guys in hot, spicy debates. My views have not changed, the will to prosecute them have. |

RIP. The fact that some eyewitnesses report that the parachute of one pilot did not open is horrific. Chinese engineering at its best, again! The last of the FT-7NI two-seater is down now and it is known that this model is not in production anymore. This could mean the end to the F7 era in the NAF. The aqusition of the F7 was an unlucky decision by the NAF, we should have better invested in Trainer Aircraft with modern avionics like Hawk or L-159 and then move on to advanced Figher-Jets. Resulting in a dead-end-failture we might be pushed back to square-one again. At least the A-29 Tucanos are on the horizont for the NAF to provide a solid layer for flight-training and strike missions. |

SuperSixOne:At the time of the procurement in 2003, the Air Force was coming in from a state of camatose. Most of the officers had not flown in proper fighter jets in over 10 years since the Jags were abandoned due to sanctions. I felt that the purchase of the F-7s made sense. Our MB-339s are stuck in Italy were they had been sent for upgrades. World Bank sanctions and those of our other creditors prevented us from purchasing Western aircrafts. We could also not buy from Russia as they couldn't provide financing. The Chinese were the only logical choice, the F-7 was the only fighter we could get from them. Given our position, we really didn't have many choices, in fact we only had 1. The Nigerian Air Force under the last 12 months has flown 30,000 combat hours. Yes, our Air Force is small, but the attrition rate is well below acceptable standards. We won't feel it if we had a larger Air Force. The A-29 would be an important addition to the force, but with the loss of the F-7s, it means we would need the JF-17 as soon as we can. 1 Like |
