Nice topic. I so much enjoyed all your responses. Honestly, people perish because of lack of knowledge. We that are from the English speaking part of the world thrive well in America and we adapt easily. This is a plus! Who says you cannot work with your Nigeria degree in the United States of America? Friends, you can work with degrees no matter the field you have your degree in. I have personally pulled people out of street where they drive cabs/taxis and pushed them into Corporate America. My humble message come advice is that you believe in yourself and in your ability. I am very well convinced that you guys saying that you cannot work with your degrees do not even know how to write a resume/cv. Your resume can get you in the door but your personality will definitely land you the job in Corporate America! The first step for you today is to identify your field and then network with people in a similar field. It is easy and free!!! Look for free seminars and conferences in your area and attend! They will even give you free food and materials when you attend! This will reawaken your consciousness.

Please let me know if you need step by step guidance.

OMG; reading this thread had caused me to be afraid of leaving the Nigerian shores; although i am working, doing well, by God grace in the oil & gas industry. I have thought of applying for this latest canadian immigration program. But with all these comments; SHOULD I HAVE A SECOND THOUGHT OF STAYING IN NIGERIA or TAKE THE RISK.

@ fredgil
Your write up gave me some hope, but i will like u to throw more light into this stuff. should u feel like reaching me privately, my email is boywaffi@yahoo.com

why dont we look at the fact that if you have enough money or a nice body you can buy any certificate to say im an engineer, DR, Lawyer. If we look deep in our hearts we no the truth of why UK and USA do not accept qualifications from certain countries and besides the level at which the subject is learnt may not enable someone from a certain country to be fully competant in the job. In some jobs you may require extra traing i.e DR, Nurse, Teacher in others you may need a new degree or masters.

having had experience of UK and nigerian uni systems trust me there are many reasons why back home degrees are disregarded. where does one start, cheating, lecturers passing u for buying their texts books and handouts, bribing ur way to good grades, sleeping ur way to good grades. I was in Nigeria recently and had the opportunity to read some written communication of some so called graduates and I was sad for these people - if one cannot express themselves properly how do you expect to compete with graduates from around the world.

u also have to remember that some really bad eggs have spoiled our reputation and we all have to pay for this - i know people who claim that they have work experience when in fact they just get their friend or uncle to write a reference for them

hello all,

I just wanted to ask - what if someone did a first degree in Nigeria, and did a Masters in the United Kingdom, came to Nigeria and worked for about 3 years, what are the person's chances of landing a job in America?

Are UK degrees recognized in America?

Also can a Nigeria trained legal practitioner with a few years experience work in corporate law in America?

Please all answers will be much appreciated

Wow! so many things are wrong with our nation.
it all stem from our bad leadership style and our overtly docile follower ship system. We must all take that pain to start making amend. There are countries that spend over 80% of their capital expenditure on education. Here in Nigeria we are not paying attention to what really matter.

Those of us who can hold our head high overseas can do so because of the quality education we received from foreign schools. Imagine a situation where a department of a private university in US receives more money than what is used to run the whole of UNILAG? How do we compete? We need to start investing in the training and education of our people.

Now we are creating a new generation of illiterates who apparently saw the four walls of a university and cannot make any meaningful impact on the society.

Excellent point on the value of interning in America. I always advise people to go that route
before they graduate and stop chasing after short term money from so so jobs.
