I know guys who didn't have a CS background and are doing great in IT. If you're comfortable with numbers it will be easier for you.

NIIT will teach you only one thing because that's what you paid for. If you payfor networking they won't teach your database

Some of those Andela guys aren't even CS grads. A 12yr old boy can be exposed to programming and will do better than most grads

One of my friends younger brother just got a 190k a year job at Google straight out of college, he had a degree in mechanical engineering from MIT

One of my juniors in ife works at Facebook though he graduated from computer engineering, all he knew was from all these computer schools where he became a lecturer before leaving naija

wrong, programming is part of what you are taught in computer science, na wa oooo, so no one corrected you, they teach them coding, just that it's mostly outdated languages but the basic principles of programing are taught in computer science, even networking to an extent is taught, computer science is everything computer, every single thing, they will teach you

That's what I'm saying.
In school they don't just teach the full practical of coding as they would in NIIT.

Its the principles as you said and they will guide us with and you develop yourself.


I'm just against what raumdeuter said that there is nothing they teach in computer science that one can't learn outside.

Instead of wasting money at niit buy a laptop with a good battery, get the softwares you want to learn and learn how to use them on YouTube, some videos last 11hrs, I even have a software that makes the YouTube video float on your desktop while you are doing what the video says on the app

exactly but I don't like working for people, I like my freedom, my last job, my boss allowed me to be doing outside jobs, my life can't settle around paying house rent and feeding, my uncle 58 that has been an engineer for a top company for years all he can show for himself is one bungalow and a car, with children in University, that's the average that most achieve, me I want more and that's why IT caught my eye the room for Innovation is so vast, make a useful software and you are a billionaire in a few years, no other profession guarantees that, people are so dependent on computer related things that your pool of users will be endless if you have the right idea, see nairaland, this site is so basic, hosting it will be very cheap but guess what, Mr Man is making millions every month, go to advert page see his prices, then visit front page see the different banners and allow the maths to sink in, have the right idea and you will have an easy pleasant life

As a 4th year CS student on IT in unilag, I believe I'm qualified to answer this question.

I'd first like to point out that there are people in Google that didn't step into college but were able to enter as software engineers. Despite this fact, the vast majority still went to college.

With everything I've learnt in the previous years, I've done courses ranging from compiler construction, networking, algorithms and data structures, taught languages languages like C, Python, Java, php. To be honest, I can bet 80-90% can't remember what we did in this courses and even the ones that remember, only a VERY FEW number would be able to know how to apply them. I've read on quora a number of times that these courses are actually applicable.

Despite this, there are tons of people in other departments who are better than even the CS students in programming. Programming is not computer science as many of us here might know. Concepts like algorithms and other areas are what makes a CS students and this is what the "TOP" companies usually test for.

In the end, many graduates in CS are "better" than people in other fields but of courses these CS graduates are graduates from Ivy leagues cos they're the ones that really know how to teach these stuffs.

My verdict: getting a degree in computer science isn't a waste when one opens up his mind to see beyond the theories being taught in school.

finally the way sch is run in naija is a joke. outdated syllabus. in Uniben as of 2017 in my finals. they were teaching us millennia goals on housing finance. I knew then and there I've been scammed.

I don't agree, there are some courses that are useful, the practical aspect is useless yes but the theory is very useful

Get a university degree, if u have chance and money run some IT programs on the side

I studied economics but today I'm a web developer, 80% of the things I know I learnt on YouTube, 15% at niit and the rest by chance, I still know in my heart that there are many basics that I will never know because I didn't study computer science, my guy that did operates faster than me, I even know more than him but because of his background knowledge he knows how to build Bridges

For instance if I design an app for a company, they will ask if it can work on both phones and tablet, I will explain that it's made for phones but it can work on tablets, just that the graphics will be poor and the orientation wouldn't change, they will ask me to fix it and I will have to start again and make a new app but my friend will know how to fix it that is just 1 example

YouTube is really rich though, I'm a fan of DIY and tbh, there are many things I have been able to do on my myself by downloading YouTube videos, network is just really bad in my area at night.

Airtel 1.5gb night plan for 200 bucks can do a lot.

The problem with computer science undergradute degrees is that they're being delivered to teenagers, who have no real understanding of how the IT world really works

My recommendation would be that prospective computer science students are mandated to have some IT experience before they join the course.

That way, the students cam really connect with what's being taught.

Networking is very underrated in Nigeria here.
Starting from our lecturers. They'll look down on you if you choose networking as your career path. Its very normal. They've poisoned our mind.

Even in the industry. They see CS students who choose networking as LAZY.

I just said that based on what I've seen. I'm still a young man trying to choose a career and I cant assert anything.
What I say is based on my experience.
