Are you a black female accountant or finance professional in Ontario and you are yet to join BFAN (Black Female Accountant Network)? You sure have missed the Oct 27th conference because we are fully booked for it but there are other conferences coming up in the future. Also it is an easy access to other networking opportunities and conferences.

If you are interested please pm me so that we can take it up from there.

Hello everyone! A very big weldone to everyone on this thread that takes out their time to respond to questions and proffer solutions. God bless you all.
I feel blessed to have crossed over here from the sister thread after receiving my ppr last week smiley. Please I urgently need your advise/ opinions and comparisons between Mississauga and Brampton. I’ll be as detailed as I can about what’s important to me at this point.
1. Job opportunities. My kind of job is not industry-specific. It’s more of administrative duties and I am currently building my career as a health and safety professional. So I basically need a place with more job and networking opportunities and higher pay wink

2. Transportation. I want a city with good public transport system as I may not be driving for some months.

3. Accommodation. I’m a single lady so I’m basically looking for a room in a shared apartment or a studio if it’s not too expensive.
From my research, Brampton has cheaper rents but Mississauga is more diversified as per jobs. Also read that crime rate is higher in Brampton.
Please I’ll deeply appreciate any advice or opinions. I intend to land first week in November.
Also any suggestions for other cities in Ontario in very welcome.
P.s: the only reason i didn’t mention Toronto is cos of the high rents and Ottawa cos I read in different places that it is too laid back.
Please help!

Hi,
Not sure what the arrangement is but coming in December (when the cold is at it's peak and the temperature is in the minus) you might have to double check on that basement suite. If you do not have direct control over the heater, then I will say don't go there. The basement is the coolest part of the house FYI. The difference in price between a basement and a shared apartment may be insignificant when compared to the cold you would have to deal with.

My opinion though!!!

Hello guys, for Ontario province do you apply for provincial health insurance immediately on arrival or wait till the 3 months elapses before applying. From what I'm reading, one will have to spend up to 100 days in Ontario to be eligible. Please I need some clarity on this

Hi!
For job opportunities, I will use this analogy, Missi is like "Lagos Island" while Brampton is "Lagos mainland". You can deduce that right smiley
For accommodation, I live in Brampton and I can tell you that it's really peaceful.
For Transit system, Brampton and MIssi kinda run a joint transit which kinda makes it so easy.
Hope that helps!

Hi, you can go to any Service Ontario centre after landing and you have all the required documents to register. As you rightly stated, you get access to public healthcare 3 months after landing and living in the province. The requirements and other relevant info are listed here, https://www.ontario.ca/page/documents-needed-get-health-card
It's not something to be unusually worried about as if you enjoy relatively good health then you'll be fine. I and my crew came with just a pack of Paracetamol and a dose of anti malarial drugs in case we break down from the stress of relocating as well as worm expeller. I ended up throwing most of them away as we didnt need them and everyone was fine. If you need to cover yourself though, you can get medical insurance from IGI, AIICO and AXA Mansard to name a few. They are a cheaper alternative than going with Canadian insurance companies and paying from your precious POF.

Thank you for this better to live in a slightly 'expensive' but warm apartment, than a cheap but unbearably cold basement.

I hear some basements get really cold during winter.

No, you don't need to carry that much, else you will have to declare it. Just carry below 10k CAD and put the rest on ur account. They only asked me how much I was having with me...Mine was even about 4k CAD in cash, and they said ok. Nothing much. Don't carry huge amount, even for safety purposes. Make u no lose am sef.

Hi, thanks a lot for responding. I truly appreciate it. I can’t quite deduce your analogy cos I’ve never lived in Lagos. Asper transit systems, I can choose either city then?hmmmm...God help my indecision!

I'm still a novice my brother, don't know much about financial transactions and transfers between naija and Canada banks, maybe our seniors that are more knowledgeable in that area can help u. I will advise u also discuss with ur bank how they do it. I was told by my bank that I can use my mastercard for purchases and even withdraw from ATM machines here. It will just convert the amount in CAD equivalence and dispense to u. GTBnk told me I can only withdraw 300CAD with their own debit mastercard daily. So I had to leave some of my monies in my Naija account since I can still operate them from here. But find out.

As I type it’s -2 degrees in Calgary. We’re still in fall but trust me “winter is here”. Public transport is literally breaking down, the CT train is offering limited service, cars and human have started skidding!!! Brace yourself people.

I’m literally stuck at the bus stop as is everyone , buses no gree come!

There's a lot of info on Calgary on this thread, but I'm sure someone will still step forward to provide you feedback.

People in Manitoba hardly give any feedback. There's very little info on Winnipeg/Manitoba online (not only on this thread). My theory is that their fingers are frozen or they are too busy shoveling snow. They usually share info before arriving, then they share landing gist. After that they disappear.

Or when they leave Manitoba for one reason or the other they become active again.

You could do a search of the thread. But start from Page 113, GS put some links on life in Calgary and Winnipeg.
