I can't believe Australia and US are even on the list
have you heard of the new racist phenomenon going on in both countries thanks to Donald Trump and his global populist movement - A clue for you is that Canada is one of the countries resisting that evil movement!

Racism is EVERYWHERE, even Canada has problems with racism, don't be deceived some places are just more overt with their problems.

I like your profile. To be honest with you, this is the best time for you to leave for Canada. Your age is not so bad and your qualification is a plus. Try to find the Canada thread and study it well, it has loads of info on it. Just pass your English test and you are as good as a PR in Canada...

This is a really educative thread.

I'm in a similar position as the op.

Please permit me to seek for sincere advice as well.

I am a registered nurse, midwife, public health nurse. I have PGDE, BNSc as well as MSc Nursing. I'm almost done with my Ph.D (Nursing). I'm a lecturer in a federal university in the south.
I'm 33years old, married with 2kids (7 and 2 years old).
My husband is a medical doctor and 42years old working with the state government.

We are planning to relocate to either USA, Canada or Australia.
MAJORLY because of our children's future.

Is it advisable?

I read something about Mexico from the travel section. Opp why not go through that thread and see how to migrate to mexico then in 2 years become a citizen of Mexico and work your children via school to US or Canada?

To emigrate or not is the question here.

I need very mature advice and inputs as regards a situation I am trying to resolve.

In the last two yearsI have been thinking seriously about relocating my entire family abroad but I am still held back by indescision.

Just this afternoon I made a decision to throw it open on Nairaland Travel section. I am sure the mature contibutions that flow forth here will help me to a large extent to take a final decision on which direction the pendulum swings.

Please note that my wife is indifferent as per where we are. She just wants us to be together peacefully. She is also not a very ambitious person inthe ense thay she does not really aspire to be Folorunsho Alakija or Dangote's wife. She is very satisfied with being an average, comfortable upper middle class citizen anywhere in the world provided there is peace.

I am the money man with a lot of ambition and an undying aspiration to beat (or at least compete favourably with Aliko Dangote.

It would help if you can indicate exactly what you want to do for money once abroad. It will have relevance on what kind of visa you will have to go for and the pathway you will undertake.

Forget about that route, we usually see that investment route from Chinese and Indian investors. $5000,000 is about 182,135,000.00 Naira. The average Nigerian does not have that money. Even those that do would not be able to apply because they would have provide legitimate means of how they got the money.
I got into the US through another stable route

I will come harsh before I you see what you like. If you wa y to be like Dangote, you have to be in Nigeria? Did Dangote emigrate? How many billionaires in Nigeria emigrated? Likes of Oviosu of paga had to relocate back to Nigeria. It’s not easy for a Nigeria to become a Dangote in the US. You can live average like your wife envisage, I mean you can live well. There is nothing wrong with emigration but what is your motivation. In assessing your motivation check your background. It is. It strange that likes of Elon Musk and many successful founders are emigrants but if you check well, they emigrated at a very early age- childhood to teenage. If you are emigrating as a family man, you must have a very brilliant idea, some good money and a strong network to become Dangote abroad. It’s not easy starting a business as a foreigner. I have been there so my words are from experience. If your ambition is to be Dangote, you should stay back. If your ambition is to be okay with thousands of dollars, abroad is good for you.
Did you see the Nigeria who was paid billions as a robotic engineer? In Nigeria before you can make it be ready to give bribes, even pastors and imams are in the bribing spree. My brother you cannot grow with such a system. The Dangote you are talking about is because he is alive, God forbid the day Dangote breathes his last his empire would crumble. You don't build a system on corruption.

Honest answer. Relocate with your entire family.
Nigeria is a terrible place to raise kids with the deteriorating moral and socio-economic conditions.

Countries you should look into:

1. Sweden - low crime, good healthcare
2. Netherlands - Multi cultural society
3. Canada - all the good reasons
4. Switzerland - low crime, thriving economy, multicultural society

Pls consult your wife. Nigeria is a NO-NO!
I'm interested to migrate too...I'm a medical doctor practising here in Nigeria.. how do I go about this?

just as I expect. You guys read and don’t understand and think these things come easy. That guy is only a Nigerian because he was born in Nigeria . He isn’t Nigerian mentally. He is just 25. He had his degree in the Uk. Read through my post, you will see where I put that you have to leave Nigeria early to be like Dangote or robotics engineer you mentioned. Now the OP is 45. Is it with his Nigerian degree that he will become a robotics engineer. It is not easy anywhere. Nigeria is harder I know but it is good to think well. I have been in a similar situation and ended up wasting money!

A little background to aid your objectivity.....
I am a 47 year old Nigerian with a 43 year old wife. Married 13 years. Three kids; 12, 9 and 6.

I have a degree in humanities while she has a HND in Admin.

We are both involved in hustling in Lagos, Nigeria. The hustle hasn't paid off big time yet but we get by with about 3- 5 Mill earnings annually. We used to do much more than that until 3 years ago.

I have had significant international exposure having lived in UK as a child and also bisited all continents in the last 5 years.

is it that you didn’t network with Nigerians in the countries you visited? If you are able to get an international job, fine. But at your age, you cannot become Dangote by going abroad and just want to go and hustle. Are you just a Bachelor degree holder? I would think you should enroll for further studies seriously.

If truly u aspire to be as rich as Dangote or somewhere close someday then don't travel out.

Let your wife and kids go while u stay back here to crack the nuts and break even in a bigger way that u dream.

You can hardly become rich as immigrant in any country, very difficult and rare.

My opinion.

Wish u well in whatever decision u finally take.

Note: if u are still struggling financially as a young person and want to be sure that u don't end up poor, then u can travel out of Nigeria to guarantee u an average life or middle-class life but if u are doing averagely ok financially in Nigeria but u want to be rich, then stay in Nigeria and crack it until u discover a product or services that sell fast and wild then u will become rich with time.

Only very lucky and exceptionally talented people who venture into health related or ICT related field have a slight possibility of becoming rich abroad as immigrant.

There is more racism in Nigeria than in any of these places you mentioned.

I was in a taxi in PH some time ago when a passenger was ranting at how Igbos have spoiled the Garden City, and stated that she would have no problems deporting every Igbo person from the state if she was a governor. I have heard such several times in Bayelsa, Oyo, and in many states I have been to in Nigeria. I have even been in Enugu and overheard in an office a discussion between two men of how they (the Enugu people) were being oppressed by an Abia man (who was head of that agency) and how they would fight him to the end until he packs his bags back to the Abia village he came from. This is Igbo to Igbo hatred. What can beat that?

I don't even want to mention the fact that Hausa is the official language spoken in a federal parastatal such as NEMA. As if we have nothing like federal character in this country (indeed, have we ever had it?).

So all this talk about racism abroad is not strange to us. It is here in Nigeria among us. So anyone who can survive the ethnic-based racism we have here in Nigeria can survive it abroad.

Thanks Laird. I could start with some not so odd job just as a sacrifice and to use the time to study the busines environment. I am sure that I should be able to invest in some business within one year of being there. I also intend to keep my business running here and hope to visit at least every quarter.

Even if I could afford it I really wouldnt subscribe to going back to university to learn in order to get a job. My wife had been interested in healthcare especially nursing. She would say yes at the slightest opportunity.

Your last statement is quite pregnant and most attractive. Its a viable option. Only snag being that I love seeing my kids everyday. At least let me have my fill of them while I can. Staying withput seeing them for long periods will be quite the torment.

it's good you want to stay with them. However, you can visit them regularly so as not to deprive them of the opportunity of knowing that the whole world is not like Nigeria.

I'd been there and I realized that cannot make it big since I was there late. I will only live an average citizen.

I had to come back and set my self well but then I moved to a business friendly country and Open my business.

bros you are being overly optimistic ooo. You can’t just start a business as an emigrant ooo. You definitely have not done your research. Please take your time and do so you don’t waste money and fall into the hands of fraudster. I did a lil reasearch but still failed at this adventure. Please do well and ask questions off here . I mean consult with immigration lawyers and also the officials of the country you have in mind.

Oga, @47, some of your mates are Landlords and have streets named after them for posterity. How can you decide to be in transit? Please save up for your kids to school abroad if they must but it's not worth it for you & ur spouse, life of struggling is not the best, what of the insult from young folks you will be hustling with? they are not respectful over there. Let your kids go there as students while you visit as often as possible, as a respectable man which you are. It's only in Nigeria that people of 70+ are still relevant in business & politics, ask OBJ, Buhari, Bamangatuku, et al
