A little background to aid your objectivity.....
I am a 47 year old Nigerian with a 43 year old wife. Married 13 years. Three kids; 12, 9 and 6.

I have a degree in humanities while she has a HND in Admin.

We are both involved in hustling in Lagos, Nigeria. The hustle hasn't paid off big time yet but we get by with about 3- 5 Mill earnings annually. We used to do much more than that until 3 years ago.

I have had significant international exposure having lived in UK as a child and also bisited all continents in the last 5 years.

/
N3-5m annually converted to Canadian dollars is not enough to support your family. So moving your family there while you hustle in Nigeria is out of the question.

If you are not going with immigrant visa, how do you intend to survive? Menial jobs under the table?

The only solution I can think of is for you to go first, feel it and decide if it is doable or not. But then remember that if you travel, the income you currently have in Nigeria will no longer be guaranteed. At 47, don't travel anywhere without guarantee. Such move is for those under 30.

My honest opinion- starting all over in a new country can be very challenging at times. Particularly at your age. Why don't you add the 10 million naira to boost your business , I have seen a lot of homes that have been destroyed due to this idea of families being apart.
Everywhere is what you make of it. You can be miserable in the USA and there are people in Nigeria that live in a room apartment that are extremely joyful
The grass always looks greener on the other side until you get closer. If you were 20-35. I probably would advise you differently

All the best- your age mate!

I'm interested to migrate too...I'm a medical doctor practising here in Nigeria.. how do I go about this?
Doc. Apply for CANADA immigration visa to work as a skilled staff.
Apply for the family variety, that’s if you are married. However, you have to be prepared for accommodation except you have someone to squat you and your famil which is unlikely possible

I feel Your kids should go and use the study route or else your wife relocates with them

Canada has only odd jobs for immigrant adults except You go back to canadian University as an adult to spend years and big money to study health care or I.T courses to increase (not guarantee) your chances of getting a middle class job in Canada.

So you make the money here in Naija while your family takes the opportunity there ( abroad). My opinion

Bestest advice
When wife and children settle down, he can join them after 2 to 3 years

@47, some of your mates are Landlords and have streets named after them for posterity. How can you decide to be in transit? Please save up for your kids to school abroad if they must but it's not worth it for you & ur spouse. Let them go there young as students while you visit as often as possible. It's only in Nigeria that people of 70+ are still relevant in business & politics, ask OBJ, Buhari, Bamangatuku, et al
Harsh, not cool.

Its not his fault that he didn't make it big on time like his mates u mentioned and life is not a race, some will start early, but end up fast, some will start late, pick up late and finish best.

Some will start excellently, continue excellently but finish woefully!

Please read carefully what I wrote. Simple comprehension but let Me break it down; Without Canadian Degrees in a labour/ skill/ worker shortage occupation and Canadian experience, It would be almost impossible to get a Middle class paying job in Canada.

Canada does not recognize Professional qualifications from third world countries. Even Nigerian medical professors and specialists do not have their nigerian degrees and qualifications accepted or recognized for practice or medical work in Canada.

If You have another opinion, let the thread know

Canadian University education and Canadian work experience like internship is what is generally most times accepted by Canadian employers for middle class Canadian jobs

Hello?! What of when I run my MSc Postgraduate in a relatively cheap Canadian pharmacy school.

Will I have satisfied the Canadian experience demand and have my chances of good employment in my career boosted?

Pharmacy undergraduate degree is from Nigeria.

You are wrong. Laird has summed it up for you. I have relations and lots of friends and classmates in Canada and I do not want to repeat some of the stories here. In case you do not know, cost of living in Canada is quite high and as a elderly immigrant without a Canadian education or knowledge of French, it will be a lot harder.

Oga, I have lived in Canada over 5years and can tell from 1st hand experience. Let me tell you one thing today which I am sure we all relate with. Many people abroad tell you how hard it is over here and are never willing to go back home. Have you ever wondered if it is that hard truly? If you read through my other comment on his post, you will see where I wrote that even those who graduated from school here pick survivor jobs for survival pending when they get what they want. There are many immigrants who just came and landed good jobs. You might take your time to read the thread on living in Canada as a landed immigrant for better exposure. In essence, going to school here does not translate to better opportunities in all case. As for French, if you are not migrating to Quebec, there is no need to bother.
One last thing though, many of us carry our entitlement mentality from back home here as such, when things seem not to be going our way, we start painting the society bad. Please, do not tell people they are wrong as you can only tell from your perspective.
N.B: Canada isn't there yet compared to the US in terms of equality and job prospects however, we should remember that US is much larger and more of a capitalist system thus, they have less protectionist perspectives.

Actually most Nigerian billionaires emigrated, they have homes abroad that they spend more time in than Nigeria!
Dangote and Otedola are not in Nigeria 60% of the time!

My brother Dangote and Otedola built their fortune in Nigeria. They started from the scratch in Nigeria. So what are you saying.

To emigrate or not is the question here.

I need very mature advice and inputs as regards a situation I am trying to resolve.

In the last two yearsI have been thinking seriously about relocating my entire family abroad but I am still held back by indescision.

Just this afternoon I made a decision to throw it open on Nairaland Travel section. I am sure the mature contibutions that flow forth here will help me to a large extent to take a final decision on which direction the pendulum swings.

Please note that my wife is indifferent as per where we are. She just wants us to be together peacefully. She is also not a very ambitious person inthe ense thay she does not really aspire to be Folorunsho Alakija or Dangote's wife. She is very satisfied with being an average, comfortable upper middle class citizen anywhere in the world provided there is peace.

I am the money man with a lot of ambition and an undying aspiration to beat (or at least compete favourably with Aliko Dangote.

Unless you get a permanent resident card of whatever nation you choose before leaving Nigeria, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT. You will regret it. Stay in Nigeria. Out of the people that did what you are proposing only a select few made it/ended up being up. Some people can no longer see their families because either the husband was refused a visa to come back in or deported. You do not want to be an Illegal in any country. I repeat, FORGET IT. Only do it if you have permanent residency of that county/Immigrant visa before leaving Nigeria. You have been warned. There are Nigerian families that are homeless in various countries all over.

Did you not see the recent videos of families leaving the U.S, crossing over to Canada? Do not attempt it. Enjoy what you have in Nigeria. In Nigeria, you have family and friends that will take you in when katakata bursts. Abroad, you will be rendered homeless in less than 24 hours because everyone minds their own wahala.

This is a really educative thread.

I'm in a similar position as the op.

Please permit me to seek for sincere advice as well.

I am a registered nurse, midwife, public health nurse. I have PGDE, BNSc as well as MSc Nursing. I'm almost done with my Ph.D (Nursing). I'm a lecturer in a federal university in the south.
I'm 33years old, married with 2kids (7 and 2 years old).
My husband is a medical doctor and 42years old working with the state government.

We are planning to relocate to either USA, Canada or Australia.
MAJORLY because of our children's future.

Is it advisable?

Omo!!!! You be bookokogist!! See degrees.

Your certificates plus that of your Doctor husband would make your family and children stunningly rich if you're able to take few five years to obtain American transfer and work experience.

If I am to relocate where would you advise I relocate to?

ASPIREX:
Countries that have been on my radar for a while have been Canada, USA and Australia....maybe because of the language similarities and the fact that I have visited all three and love them.

I advise you to consider either Canada or Australia as both countries currently have programs that welcome skilled immigrants only. There are prerequisites put in place that must be met. So long as you meet the prerequisites, Canada and Australia can welcome you. Trying to relocate your entire family to the US legally is not realistic at this time. Even without the prevailing tough immigration policy of President Trump's administration, you can't easily relocate your entire family to the US. There are restrictions. So consider Australia, Canada, or New-zealand.

God bless you too.

People don't understand that life is not a competition. We all can't achieve our dream life at the same time. Some will start seeing positive results in their life at later years.

Some it maybe their children that will make them great.

Some will be rich and favoured very early but may end up having useless children who will squander their riches on fun and entertainment while some will continue to struggle and at the end their kids will make them very great and popular.

Some will be very successful but may end up having deadly illnesses and terminal sickness that will make their life a misery while some will be rich early and die untimely.

Some will be poor and needy, all these things are timing and destiny, nobody can run beyond his or her destiny.

Just do your best and leave the rest to God, destiny and time to decide

Like I said, until you live here, you will not understand. Its not a light hearted issue. Some people have gone back home because of this issue. There are problems everywhere in this world. Tribal issues is different from institutionalized racism. Institutionalized racism can literally impede the quality of life just based on their skin color. Statistics has shown that people with ethnic names are more likely not to get call backs than people with more white sounding names.
