If you have the kind of money that you can migrate through investment, then why not continue to make that money in Nigeria, then vacation out occasionally? Life is much sweeter that way.

The guidelines: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/immigrant-investor-visas.html

If I had assets of 1million dollars, why the hell will I waste it to immigrate? I can continue to grow my business, employ people locally, and have a much lower cost of living. People will call me sir, carry my bags for me, cook me good food, drive me around, and I can carry olosho without fear of arrest. I can attend weddings, trash talk with my friends at a bush bar, while enjoying our warm weather. If I need healthcare that I can't get in Nigeria, I will travel out. I should go to USA and pay 35% of my income in taxes? I dey mad?

The only part I like for your post na the OLOSHO part . Carry olosho without fear grin ; that’s the one thing that’s will always make naija different

Your analysis is faulty.

If his wife and kids move abroad is she going to be a housewife? If not, why are you using his earnings to judge what kind of life the wife and kids will live?

What matters is that she gets prepared from here with a skill or talent(like hairdressing etc) to start earning money once she hits the ground and then he supports her with fees over there so she can go nursing or dental school etc and retrain herself. Then she will get a job and start earning

N3-5m annually converted to Canadian dollars is not enough to support your family. So moving your family there while you hustle in Nigeria is out of the question.

If you are not going with immigrant visa, how do you intend to survive? Menial jobs under the table?

The only solution I can think of is for you to go first, feel it and decide if it is doable or not. But then remember that if you travel, the income you currently have in Nigeria will no longer be guaranteed. At 47, don't travel anywhere without guarantee. Such move is for those under 30.

Very good advice, you have gotten here. I live in the US and have lived for over a decade, I also work in the health care field. If the visa lottery was still in effect then I would have highly recommended the US. US has has more job opportunities, generally pay more and more easier to set up business here. But since the visa lottery is no longer in effect for Nigerians, getting green card these days is very tough. Visa over staying is very big problem and it's going to be very very hard to move around in this present day with out papers. For that reason , I would recommend Canada, at least that the opportunity to get citizenship is more achievable and can be done so in a more timely manner.
No wonder I haven't seen u all these years!!!

Okay name some Nigerian Millionaires or billionaires in the U.S .

It is not easy to be a LEGAL billionaire anywhere, there are ONLY about 2,000 in the whole world!

Now, there are MANY Nigerian millionaires in the US. Just because they are not flaunting on instagram. There are successful real estate people, lawyers in NY ( I currently know 2!) there are also successful Nigerians in Texas one that I know is Kase Lawal. I am sure if you google ‘Nigerian millionaires in the US’ you will come up with some names.

As long as you have a US degree, green card/citizenship, you are smart, hardworking you will be rewarded. Of course there is racism,
that just means you have to work twice as hard, no matter how racist a white person is, once they know you are smart and valuable they have no choice but to grudgingly give you your due respect. In my opinion, tribalism in Nigeria is a much more obstacle to success than racism here.

If you go the route of start-up then you don’t need a degree, just be a legal resident and have a great idea and be ready to work hard and NOT cut corners then you will be rewarded, you might not be a billionaire but most often you will rewarded according to what you put in.

If you are lazy, or you expect short cut or you want to be fraudulent. America is not for you.

She needs at least 1 year to get settled anywhere they go. Yep. Did you just say that as soon as she lands, she will start earning once she hits the ground? The job is waiting for her at the airport. SMH. What will be her immigration status (the most important)? What have you been drinking? I wish it is that easy.

Let's assume he pulls N4m. That's about Canadian $14,000 . This is not even enough to cover rent for a year.

Once again, your logic makes no senses. When you are in Rome, you do as the romans do. Who bloody cares if you are millionaire in Nigeria, when you living abroad. If you earn $10,000 a year, that a millionaire in Nigeria but that is low income in the U.S. I'm starting some of the posters claim on here because of some you guys make no sense at all. Again, list names of Nigerians who have popular successful business in America.

Mistake $10,000 Is NO INCOME at all in the USA per year .

OP, consider things carefully.

At 47, you cannot afford to migrate anyhow. Especially with kids. You also cannot afford to leave them behind anyhow for your wife only to raise. The first two are close to their teenage years.

A relative migrated to Canada with his wife and five kids some years ago. To do his PhD. He had around 50k USD. Still it wasn't easy. Apparently he was struggling so much that hardly anyone heard from him. That was before Canada began to tighten up immigration.

Do not relocate your entire family with you yet unless you have a visa category that allows you to do so legally, stay and work legally. Otherwise study route, assuming you have plenty of money, might be best. Consider if you can study a post-grad course that qualifies as skill shortage category. That way you can stay more easily post-studies. Your wife can then pursue a health-care related course after that.

I love this.

I don't even know where to start but something I have seen and know is leaving your wife and kids abroad is a dangerous game on your home, women are weak alone with the challenges of staying in the US then someone comes around as an helper from fixing cars or running errands before you know what's up they start banging your woman..if you want to relocate die once and come with your family ..have it at the back of your mind that you would struggle for some months or probably 1-2 years and be prayerful, school and you would be alright..its good to invest in Nigeria but the economy is not stable....Houston ,Maryland boyz those men are NACKSON during the cold weather...don't jeopadise your family...if you are not there you cant know what's happening.

I wanted to say may God bless you, but I realize your entire generation should be blessed. So may God bless you and your entire generation.

Anyone who desires to immigrate to the US and can do so LEGALLY has a great chance of becoming whatever they want to be (with God's grace).

Point to note: If you are narrow minded, America can only do little or nothing to help you.

TheNaijanBlog:

This is a very HUGE lie!!!! America is one of the very few countries where an immigrant can become a millionaire/billionaire, all you need to do is have great ideas, work very HARD within the legal limit and you will be rewarded- that is what is called the American dream, that attracts many smart immigrants.

Nigeria?!!! Really??!! Where you need to know who is who? Dangote?! He was a freaking Dantata/Dangote dynasty!!! Check out all the billionaires in Nigeria they were all children with CONNECTIONS! Otedola ( his father was Pa Michael Otedola). Whilein America you will hear of so many billionaires where they started their business from their garage/basement all they had was a dream and a vision.

There are many Nigerians that have become millionaires here in the US with hardwork and a dream no need to know anybody. Very very FEW people are billionaires, it is not easy being one. Unless you are referring to fraud!!

OP, unless you want to go the route of fraud, if have great idea and dreams and you work very hard, America/Canada is the best place to achieve those dreams. As long as you are legal, you have an idea that people will pay money for, you work hard you will make your money. No need to have connections, no government bureaucract frustrating you with bribe, no settling, no staff stealing your money ( even if they do, the rule of law will get you justice) reliable amenities ( electricity, internet, transport, postal office) to help reduce your over head cost. Nigeria is the worst place to do business, that is why many companies left wnd went to Egypt or South Africa.

What are you on about?!! I am talking about millionaire in freaking dollars!!! I did not know that I had to spell it out for you that I was referring to dollars There are Nigerians that are millionaires, that is a fact!! They don’t flaunt it on instagram! I know 2! Yes with net worth in million dollars! In varying fields, law, finance, and oil. There is a popular Naija boy in NY, he has his own boutique investment firm. I just gave you one name, go and google the rest.

There are many hardworking Nigerians here that are successful, some are already millionaires, some are on their way there ( I am one! )

Nigeria is notorious for being a very very hard climate to do business. Even established international conglomerate find it difficult not to talk of a nobody with no political backing or pedigree or seed money.

To emigrate or not is the question here.

I need very mature advice and inputs as regards a situation I am trying to resolve.

In the last two yearsI have been thinking seriously about relocating my entire family abroad but I am still held back by indescision.

Just this afternoon I made a decision to throw it open on Nairaland Travel section. I am sure the mature contibutions that flow forth here will help me to a large extent to take a final decision on which direction the pendulum swings.

Please note that my wife is indifferent as per where we are. She just wants us to be together peacefully. She is also not a very ambitious person inthe ense thay she does not really aspire to be Folorunsho Alakija or Dangote's wife. She is very satisfied with being an average, comfortable upper middle class citizen anywhere in the world provided there is peace.

I am the money man with a lot of ambition and an undying aspiration to beat (or at least compete favourably with Aliko Dangote.

I will advice you not to travel, you will destroy your home.

However, if you wish to travel to those English countries you mentioned. You should do it in a proper way, don't use tourist or visiting visa hoping to seek assylum when you get there, you will regret it.

US don't have assylum for Nigerians, UK, even Canada. If you listen to news recently you must have read they complained bitterly about Nigerians migrating there to seek assylum.

Canada would have been my only recomendation because its somehow a socialist country. As you know our people don abuse their assylum system.

Look for any legitimate means to travel that can earn you a resident permit to work. Then settle down and invite your family.

This is a really educative thread.

I'm in a similar position as the op.

Please permit me to seek for sincere advice as well.

I am a registered nurse, midwife, public health nurse. I have PGDE, BNSc as well as MSc Nursing. I'm almost done with my Ph.D (Nursing). I'm a lecturer in a federal university in the south.
I'm 33years old, married with 2kids (7 and 2 years old).
My husband is a medical doctor and 42years old working with the state government.

We are planning to relocate to either USA, Canada or Australia.
MAJORLY because of our children's future.

Is it advisable?
/
Are you migrating legally? If yes...

It will take your husband at least 10 years to practice as a doctor in US if he is very smart (USMLE + residency). He can change to other profession in the medical field. In that case, at least 3 years for something decent. It will be easier for you to start in Nursing (challenge the Board exams).

If you are migrating to stay illegally, be ready to hate your life for years. 5 years down the drain, you still may not be able to find your footing.

The end result: Your marriage will pack up.

Do you know the meaning of dynasty?!! Means generational wealth, the money is long!!! Do you think corruption just started? Some made their money from corrupt political connections since the first republic! The very FEW that made it legally made it at the time when Nigeria was still a stable country in the 50s/ 60s.

If you can’t be a millionaire in the US @ 47 you DEFINITELY can not be one in Nigeria. There is nothing in that country for young smart people. That’s why our doctors never come back ( some Nigerian doctors here are millionaires in dollars) see that Nigerian doctor that was played by Will Smith that discovered CTE with his thick Igbo accent he has earned respect of his peers and become successful in his field.

The mistake folks make is whipping out their calculators to punch in numbers using the exchange rate. Consider this, a rent for 1-2 bdr in a decent area per month is about $1400. That is about N500k that you can use to rent a 1-2bdr flat per year in a decent place in Nigeria.

Don't discourage anybody here.

I know a single doctor in his early 30's who went from application to acceptance as Canada PR within 7 months. He did it from Lagos.

It's about having someone who understands the system inside out to be a guide

stagger:

I have a two friends from school who are in Canada as doctors. It may be easier using a specialist pathway via UK or Singapore. Straight movement to Canada as a doc from here is a lot more difficult.
