dochenaj: Thank you. I deliberately ended this angle of the discussion because there was no point arguing with her. Something I have experienced in Nigeria and France and can easily make comparison. I am blessed to be a speaker of more than one Nigerian language and I cannot tell you countless times I have heard shocking ethnophobic discussions being made in my presence in various places in Naija by people who never believed I could speak their language. Some time ago, a VIO personnel in Abuja whom I had a squabble with after he tried to conjure up a fake traffic offence (and whomI rightly put in his place), was muttering away as I drove off in Hausa how these "nyamiris" have taken over Abuja and should be sent back to the South. Institutional racism exists abroad: yes we agree. But what we have here is "ethnophobic, genocidal racism". Look at what the Fulani herdsmen are doing here. Look at Jos, Nimbo, Benue, etc. Does institutional racism abroad even come close to these? A lot of people don't know how far gone Naija is under the current leadership of the country. 10 Likes 1 Share |

ASPIREX: Having lived abroad (the UK initially and now the US) for like 10 years, I will tell you the following: 1) Age is not on your side - The younger the better in other to build a professional career. Also to qualify for legitimate immigration programme, the younger the better. 2) Don't be discouraged, try all possible means to make it to Canada (Provincial nominee, education, e.t.c). 3) Wherever you decide to go, never leave your family behind. As a matter of fact, those that will reap the main reward of your relocation are those children - (each time you feel discouraged, seeing how well your children are doing, will give you joy). 4) You can still make it abroad if you build a career that you can function at even in your old age. 5) If you make it reasonably abroad, investing in Nigeria will become a breeze and you will enjoy Nigeria if you later decide to relocate back when your children are settled into adulthood. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

lordally: The problem is that when you call Europe what people think about is UK which is a very hostile environment. Also most people when they go to a white man country they look for white collar jobs which are very limited to immigrants. When you can do your trade within legal limits and make your Money. 3 Likes |

ASPIREX: Why don’t you consider Germany, Finland, Sweden, Austria and other Scandinavian states? Some of them... scratch that...all of hem have better opportunities for you without breaking the bank. You might just have to learn the language but apart from that, they are very good! |

Re: Family Relocation Abroad! Mature Advice /input Requested! by Mizwisdom(f): 8:21am On Oct 03, 2018 |
stagger: Brother, Do you feel like a stranger in Nigeria because of your skin color? Are you stared at by other people in the street because of your color? Are you picked on by security because of your color? Are you less likely to work in corporate companies because of your color? Do you feel uncomfortable in some top clas recreational places like hotels, bars et al because of your color? Are you restricted by attitude of people from entering certain public places because of your color? Are you limited from political growth because of your color? If this happens in Nigeria, we agree that there's racism. Racism is discrimination based on the color of your skin and other physical features, while tribalism is segregation based on your ethnic group, it's not part of your body but your identity by choice or birth. 2 Likes |

WetinConsignMe: Can I tell you an experience I had in 2015? A new house I wanted to move to, and the landlord said he cannot take me as he only wants tenants that speak his language. I had to slap myself to make sure I heard right. In my own country? |

Mizwisdom: The content is the same. Whether it is discrimination by colour, or discrimination by tribe. Semantics is not what we are arguing here. I am literate and know the dictionary meanings of racism and ethnophobia. It might interest you to note that the definition of ethnophobia also has an element of racism in it. |

Hey guys, this thread is so educative. Op, I am in your shoes. At 36, Lecturing in Nigeria with 2 kids 5,3 and a wife,34. my GROSS salary is barely 1.7M per annum. It will take another 4-6 years waiting for promotion before that earning can reach 3Million pa. My thoughts ? Relocation ! My fears? Being able to start up in a new location. not necessarily the big earning jobs but won't want to wash plate or do gateman. Studied Agriculture and have a PhD already. I dread the extreme cold in Canada but won't mind enduring for the sake of my kids and their future. Those in Canada, please what Jobs opportunities can someone like me fit into... Not much has been said about Australia here...How far with that area ?? 1 Like |

when matured and exposed minds interact in a forum like this, it wont be long you take note. While i thought of restraining my self from this forum because kids have taken over, i begin to see some educative discussions recently. Noway you would see a thread on fp, from the first page is full of insults and useless abusing. Kudos to matured minds here. I have stated following because my case is similar to the op, and likely do for the sake of my childrens future. |

WetinConsignMe: "These jobs are only meant for our people". "if you allow these people, they will take over this place from us" "Rivers money for Rivers people". "I only take tenants that speak my language." "Bastard nyamiri corporal" (heard this in a military barracks) How do these statements which I have heard over the years differ from the examples you just mentioned? 1 Like |

Mizwisdom: I actually believe what we have in Nigeria is more of a deep seated ethnocentrism, because even in a particular tribe, you will still see people unjustly marginalized due to their village. |

ottizz: I think what we have here is tribalism among the poor masses not the elite. Don't you see they don't have time for such things? Most of them have friends and biz partners across all tribes It's poor people who think of tribe, elite focus on their interests, don't you think so bro? 5 Likes |

Timi1990: Lol... all these people u mentioned don’t even want US citizenship n green card.... I think the US is the only country that taxes its citizens based on their income worldwide ie Anywhere in the world you are making money, Uncle Sam must have a piece of it... Do you think Dangote, Otedola etc would want to be paying as much as 25% of their earnings as tax? Some top us millionaires/billionaires are even renouncing their US citizenship and moving to other countries just because of the tax system 2 Likes |

Well, most informative thread of the month. This one everyone is thinking of running out of Nigeria. Na lie oooo. We must stay together to suffer the change we voted oooo. Just joking. Abeg,OP just ball out ooo. And if you are out there and thinking of relocating to Nigeria ,now is bad timing. I know a doctor who relocated to Nigeria from USA about 3 years ago ( you now that feeling of wanting to come back home to settle down ),built a classical small but very fine and well equipped hospital, some shops and rented buildings. Omo! I just learnt the man is planning on relocating back to US to hussle while family remains here . Seems the dollars he saved in US don finish.Things are not as he expected. Nigerians are more bothered of getting three square meals now than getting better healthcare. They rather enter chemist shop to mix 150 naira medicine instead of entering that beautifully furnished and well equipped hospital that would charge them at least 5000naira for treatment. Things are right now tight in Nigeria as the unemployment rate is high, most people have lost their jobs due to redundancy and it is mainly alcohol and food business that thrive as man must drink and eat. 1 Like |

ottizz: This is something parents don't usually consider. Entitlement at home by kids would be transferred abroad ...if not at home...is easily acquired abroad.... then peer pressure.... and most of all.... the inability of the parents to keep their children in check using the same methods as in Nigeria....the child has the upper hand since they have the law on their side. One phone call by the child...and the parent is in legal trouble.... and child and siblings likely taken away by ACS. The child can act up...and so can the wife....both have the laws on their side. The wife can report abuse....the husband is out of the house...but...has to still pay that rent...and child support of the wife files. Many find out this kind stuff the hard way. 4 Likes |
