Ojukwu never declared the war. Ojukwu did more to avert the war than Gowon or any other person dead or alive. He preserved the 158 northern military officers who landed under his care in Kano on the very day of the coup. He Infact led them to safety. He conceded to all the Federal side demanded at Aburi only for same agreements to be jettisoned by the Federal side at the advise of the British Secretary of State,Horold Wilson and Prince Akenzua, the then SFG. The Eastern Consultative Assembly mandated and empowered Ojukwu to declare Biafra as a last effort for survival and self -preservation. Between May and November 1966,hundreds of thousands of Igbos were massacred in the north and South West including nearby Benin City in an open and unrestricted show of savagery and mob action. Neither the regional nor Federal government lifted a finger to halt the carnage. Igbophobia was already entrenched in the psyche of the Nigerians. The events leading to this period was only a convenient excuse to finish "inyamiri" off. Secession was only natural. What kind of International Politics do you expect Ojukwu to play when same international levers of Power are the covert executors of the war for sinister reasons. The only probable ally would have been Communist Russia. Guess what the Russian Party Secretary told the delegate that went to seek help in Moscow? He called them aside and point blankly said the following: "A country that is not yet 2 months old that can manufacture monster bombs, rockets, rocket launchers, radar system and all manner of inventions must be feared. We can not afford another Japan in Africa. We cannot help you". Have you read Akanu Ibiam's letter to Queen Elizabeth denucing his Knighthood as a protest to the Crown's complicity in the Biafran genocide? Google is your friend. It will further expose the depth of international conspiracy against our people from inception. Foreign economic interest was also paramount to that conflict. In the words of a historian, Kristilolu"Lydon Johnson, the then American President backed Nigeria because EUROPE and AMERICA cannot afford to have a Japan in Africa. There are reasons for this. Biafrans invented the things now being used in Brazil where we have cars run on sugar cane fuel". When you say he prolonged the war when he already lost,i am at loss sir. Ojukwu was an accidental leader. He played his role well and did his best. People who only celebrate other people's foibles naturally have very little to give. pazienza:
Why should we fight for restructuring? What do we stand to gain from restructured Nigeria. I have heard Many Igbos parrot this restructuring, and I had quried them and sort to reason with them. In the end, I found out most Igbos don't exactly understand the implications of restructured Nigeria. Now let me break it down for us.
If restructured Nigeria mean every region get to control it's resources ie resource control . With the brazen manner in which Igbo crude oil bearing parts were stripped and added to SS, while parts of old Bendel oil bearing villages were added to Ondo, what exactly are we going to gain in such Nigeria.
The SW already cornered the Sea and Air hub, and I suppose this restructured Nigeria would still have FG retain some power, which means they could yet frustrate many of our would be plans like reviving our airports to international standards and building of river ports, power generation and all worth not. Yes, I know we have huge untapped natural gas reserves, but those would take years to develop and better done in an independent Igbo nation.
Restructured Nigeria would benefit mainly SW and SS in the interim so let them fight for it, while we channel our energy towards useful ventures.
I also agree we must avoid fighting another war with Nigeria. We must be patient and bid our time. We can't fight Nigeria, we have no allies. Those down South are still eyeing our property and investments, likewise the rest of Nigeria. Wike and Rivers state recently celebrated Rivers state 50yrs anniversary, where Gowon was named after their stadium and dignitaries were invited all over North and SW, with non from Igboland. We must bid our time, we have no allies.
The SS needs Nigeria disintegrated more than us, they are the ones whose crude oil is bring depleted and shared by all, and in return are being left with destroyed environment which would need billions of dollars to clean up in the future. Meanwhile, their crude oil reserves are not infinite, Oloibiri no longer produce a single drop of oil, worst still, the world is moving towards clean energy. Technological advancements are being made everyday on Solar energy, Wind energy, sea waves energy, nuclear energy and other forms of clean energy, give it 30yrs or a bit more, and the world would start placing embargo on use of pollution generating energy sources like crude oil, which would further decrease its financial profitability. Bottomline is that they are the ones in urgent need of independence/resource control, if they must profit from their crude oil reserves, time is running out for them, and if they decide to sit and do nothing, then we must find a way to put our own share of their crude oil national cake allocations to good use, by electing better leaders.
We would be naive to be expending or dissipating our energy to hand it over to them, while all they had ever done is deride and mock our own struggles, which they stand to profit from. Freedom is a patience business, take a look at Catalonia and how long they had sought for independence from Spain, yet at each point in time, they avoid being provoked to war, being mindful of all they had built back home and how Madrid would relish to reduce them to square one. Time is endless, we must be patient, lest we lose more. We must not accept attempts by Nigerian groups to becloud our sense of reality and present us with the illusion that we need independence from Nigeria as a matter of Urgency, because we don't. apt, very apt! 1 Like |

If Europe truly wants to develop Africa. They can do it..but they rather supply ammunition and weapons... What ave European done for Africa? What they are good in is to dish out humongous loan to our selfish leaders which they know that nothing good will come out from it.all for one thing.. To colonise Africa again all in the name of paying debt and loot us dry |

Great points. Zik was Africa"s foremost Handsomegod: Again,Zik was a man far ahead of his time. He was too advanced to be closet rat. He was not that endowed and educated to be a local chief. That tribal politics was elevated over matured and nationalistic politics is an indictment on Nigeria. It only showed Nigeria was unworthy of Zik. Perhaps Zik would have stayed back in America. Perhaps,he would have achieved what Obama attained in record time. Yes,he had that essence, graces and charisma. But I can bet you,if Zik had stayed back in America, all of us today will keep roasting and spitting on his unmarked grave and yelling how he was was an efulefu who abandoned his people and roots. But he came back and did his best. Just note that every Igbo man in reckoning from history till date fights both foreign and local demons. Reason it a for a moment. There's a lot hidden from public view sir. From King Jaja till date! Zik was only human. Nigeria don't deserve him. Above all,Nigeria don't deserve Igbos. |

This guy is an encyclopedia. Wow pazienza:
You are wrong on this. See this:https://www.nairaland.com/3780719/politics-first-coalition-govt-nigeria
Awolowo was a typical Yoruba man. As cunning as hell. Zik understood his character very well, and hence was always a step ahead of him. Unfortunately, Ojukwu lacked the wits of Zik. Maybe his age played a role. But Awolowo played the same game of treachery he played against Zik( and lost to Zik) against Ojukwu and won. For while Awolowo was busy negotiating with Ojukwu and giving assurances of Yoruba support should the North open war on the East, Awolowo was also secretly negotiating with Gowon, for a place in Gowon government, I don't have evidence to support this like I had for the teachery Awo attempted to play against Zik. But the manner and haste Awo became a member of Gowon government and Awo antecedents of playing similar games before, highly suggests so. He was simply weighing his options to know who would likely emerge the eventual winner and align with him. Which was eventually what he did.
An alliance with Yorubas for Ndiigbo is a no no for me. I will be back to explain why there can never be a genuine alliance between us and Yorubas, as long as Nigeria exists. Only naive Igbos oblivious of the undercurrent current fundamental issues involving the irreconcilability of Igbo and Yoruba agenda, would suggest such a thing.
I once made a post in the past that perfectly captured this issue of how Irreconcilable Igbo and Yoruba agenda are. And why no Igbo should ever dream of possible alliance with Yorubas. Let me go look for that post. |

ghostfacekillar: if truly Europe wants Africa developed y is it hard for them to grant referendum to people who wants to form a country... Europe hate Africa and they want to do anything possible to hold us down they allowed eritrea and south sudan. But they didnt allow catalonia and confederate states of america. Its simple...once two ppl agree to part ways, europe will support them |
