speedyGonzales:You are the bad student of Economics. While NAFTA is good for countries like Mexico, America does not really gain from NAFTA Because it just means Mexico with cheaper labor and cheaper production process can dump finished goods into the American markers. Economic trade agreements like this simply opens up your country and puts you at risk. What does Nigeria produce that we want to send to Kenya or Namibia? In reverse, what stop china from setting up a poultry in say Ethiopia and flood our markets with cheap eggs and birds thereby driving our local manufacturers out of business? Have you asked yourself why Morocco is so desperate to get into ECOWAS? It is because Nigerja is the largest market and they want it. 2 Likes |

Mynd44: That is why negotiation is necessary for this type of agreements, Nigeria being a powerhouse with a strong economic team can go there and negotiate a good deal for naija. And we produce alot of things in naija but due to lack of export markets and routes but trust nigeria will produce anything, if the is a market for it and government encourage it. |

SarkinYarki:I've observed your moniker for a while. I knew you're a pdp supporter but seriously I don't take your opinion serious anymore. I've clearly realized you're somehow bias in all ramifications. You should state facts wisely and not in a bad manner. Please what brought ethnicity into this matter again. You're one of the cause of the problem. I observe one Johnnyessence here is a die hard pdp supporter but he kick against apc ideas with more mature and in depth analysis not just for the sake of criticism 1 Like |

[quote author=Racoon post=72098209]How can Buhari sign it when he have no iota of experience on how the economy works.A man with F9 in Economics & Maths? Believe me he will only sign whatsoever that have to do with cattle/fulani & corruption.[/quote I can see u with first class thinking like the dancing senator. How will you sign bill thst will allow other African countries import goods from Europe to sell in Nigeria when Nigerians are doing same business. This bill will only be meaningful if we Africans produce different goods then we trade among ourselfs not being a dumping ground for other African counties. You people say Atiku knows business but if he signs this then Naira will be so low compared to all other African currencies that will be importing goods into naija. That is if ur Thieftiku wins sha. |

The AFCTA idea like all grand ideas has pros and cons. It will greatly benefit traders and businesses. It could also cause businesses to go bust. Essentially the agreement allows free trade via the removal of trade barriers between African countries that are signatories to it. The challenges are immediately apparent. Many Nigerian companies will immediately start competing with other African companies that trade in the same goods or services as they enter Nigeria whose population makes it the juiciest market in all of Africa. If a foreign company is then able to offer better goods and services or better prices than the Nigerian company that's the end for that Nigerian company. Also other companies that previously had monopolies will.now have to sit up and become efficient or be forced out. The populace and the wider Nigerian public will benefit as companies will be forced to improve to survive as other players enter the market. This normally means better prices and services for the public. Nigerian businesses on the other hand will find it a major shock to the system and I predict many going bust due to a culture of incompetence, complacency and poor service records. Only those willing to adapt will survive. This might be the reason behind the President's reluctance. Also there'll be major pressure from captains of industry and those with monopolies like Dangote. Bribes and arm twisting will be going on the background. As the agreement will expose companies that are not well set up. |

ogunnoikitaiwo: I don't give a sh*t about tribalism. I hate all Nigerians equally. Yoruba's a mostly frauds and cowards, Igbos are thieves and liars and Hausa/Fulani are backwards thinking terrorist and Niger deltans are stupid thugs. But having lived in the west for a long time, I believe that to build a better Nigeria, we all need each other and learn from successes in other countries, especially in Asia. Trade is the best way to lift a country out of poverty, why is china building the new silk root? the one belt on road initiative? Nigerians can specialize in one thing and other African countries specialize in others and we trade among ourselves. that is what restructuring is aiming to accomplish and that is what this African trade deal is aiming to accomplish. it is a fundamental idea in economics that by so doing we can increase wealth. That is basic idea behind the EU and America and why it succeeds. |

My major fear about AFCTA is whether Nigeria is ready to compete effectively considering, poor power supply, and infrastructure. We live in a country where it is cheaper to import than produce goods. |
Re: Afcta: Senator Sani Speaks On Buhari’s Refusal To Sign Agreement by xjiggy: 8:58am On Oct 15, 2018 |
Even South Africa have refused to accent to this deal. Considering the way African economies are structured, Nigeria will be the greatest loser since its not producing much consumer good. Countries like Egypt and South Africa will dump goods here and hardly buy from us. We have to make sure it's structured in a way the deal is mutually beneficial. Even USA renegotiated NAFTA recently and are pushing for reforms in WTO. As for the tribalist that believes the President refusal is to punish the Igbos, truth is the igbos are not producing. Rather, they are importing mostly substandard goods into the country thereby promoting the country of origin of those goods. The truth is bitter but it's the truth. Evidence of their imported atrocities are littering in virtually every home..... from bad phone chargers to rechargeable lamps, cloned generators and most especially fake drugs and adulterated wines and drinks. The greatest fallacy in Nigeria is that the Igbos are INDUSTRIALISTS. They don't produce..... they import. |

AFCTA is not desirable for our economy at this point in time. We are not a producing economy, we import most of our needs. Local companies would not be able to compete with the foreign ones considering the production variables in the country. Mr President made made the right decision. Only the agriculture sector is really creating jobs in the country presently, thanks to some policies being put in place by whoever the initiator and upholders are. We really need to guide our local industries jealously at the point in our national life. Anchor borrower is working ooo. Ban of rice importation is working oo. We really need to sustain those policies for our country to move forward. A reduced price of pms will drag inflation down to some level. Nigeria can be great. |
