NAF COMMISSIONS ACCOMMODATION FOR PERSONNEL IN BAUCHI

In line with its commitment to continually enhance the welfare of its personnel for effective and efficient service delivery, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 18 October 2018, commissioned 2 additional furnished blocks of 6 x one bedroom flats of single officers’ accommodation at the NAF Base Bauchi. With today’s commissioning, the drive of the current NAF leadership to increase accommodation sufficiency for personnel, especially those serving in the North East, has been given a further boost. Speaking during the commissioning, the Guest of Honour, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, represented by the Chief of Administration, Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal Kingsley Lar, stated that the project was geared towards enhancing the welfare of personnel to enable them focus on their duties and contribute more meaningfully in adding value to the Service. While congratulating the beneficiaries of the new accommodation, the CAS enjoined them to make the best use of the facilities and also ensure its proper maintenance at all times. Air Marshal Abubakar also seized the opportunity to thank the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari for the continued support that had enabled the NAF record numerous remarkable feats within the past 3 years.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commander 251 Base Services Group Bauchi, Group Captain Mohammed Aliyu, expressed appreciation to the CAS, under whose visionary leadership the NAF has been soaring to greater heights. According to him, the newly commissioned project would further reduce the burden of accommodation on the Base. Dignitaries at the commissioning ceremony included the representative the Bauchi State Governor and Special Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Yusuf Ladan retired as well as the Commandant Nigerian Army Armoured School and Comptroller Nigeria Immigration Service Bauchi State, among others. It would be recalled that the NAF had, in July this year, also commissioned 2 blocks of Commanders’ Quarters, one block of 6 x 2 bedroom Married Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCOs) Quarters, one block of 10 x single room NCOs’ accommodation in NAF Base Bauchi to boost the morale of troops engaged in the counter terrorism operations in the North East and other internal security operations across the country.

What is "worse" about that? Denel is not a stranger to such deals, as is evident with Rheinmettal Denel Munitions. The only problem with Saudi Arabia is it's human rights record, and how that might negatively affect Denel and SA outside of the Middle East region.

There is supposedly a behind the scenes fight between Saudi Arabia and Qatar in getting a stake in Denel.

There were moves about 10 years ago by MBDA to buy a majority stake in Denel Dynamics. This was refused as SA did not want to part with its missile IP. That is strategic. Armoured vehicles and ammunition are another story. I suspect the likes of Denel Dynamics will again be off the cards in any deal.

Denel Is a strategic State asset.

It would make more sense to Co-fund and develop Certain Weapon Systems but not to actually allow them to own a piece of Denel.

Denel needs proper leadership and people who will be able to Manage funds an invest in weapon system that are guaranteed to bring in money.


Nigeria can be a great market for Denel, we should be shipping 100s of Mokopa and ingwe missiles to them. I haven't heard of or seen evidence of Nigeria Nigeria using Man portable guided missiles, so we could offer them the new Man portable ingwe missile launch system.

We don't need to go to Middle east to beg for funds when we already have everything we need here in Africa.

Saudi's trying to diversify their PGM suppliers. They'll likely push hard for this deal after the Khashoggi assassination.
The Prince knows he'll only barely survive this because Trump backs him.
There's strong support in Congress for sanctions from both parties.

If Denel played this right they could secure funding to finish some projects and bring more products to market. If they don't find a international partner I seriously doubt that Denel will still be in business 5 years from now.
I'd still prefer a deal with Qatar though. They're far from being angels on human rights, but at least they operate more under the radar than the Saudi's.
Qatar also operates 4 different fighter aircraft. This means that we could possibly get systems qualified on Mirage 2000,F-15,Eurofighter and Rafale. Maybe also Mokopa on their Apaches.
Throw in the SAAF Gripens/Hawks and you've got a lot of aircraft covered.
They could also set-up training facilities in SA. Qatar has limited airspace for this and they could stage aircraft at OTB for weapons training/qualification and joint exercises with SAAF.

Exercise IBSAMAR VI 2018, 01 to 15 October 2018

Exercise IBSAMAR VI 2018 is a Multinational Maritime Exercise held between Brazil, India and the Republic of South Africa every four years.

Correction: IBSAMAR is held every 2 years. The other naval exercises (with the Air Force and sometimes SF) also held every 2 years are Good Hope (with Germany and sometimes some other NATO Navy), Atlasur (with Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay -sometimes with Namibia and Angola as observers), and Exide (with France -sometimes Mozambique and Tanzania as observers).

It's a brilliant schedule as it allows the SA Navy to have 2 major exercises every year. Also worth pointing out that IBSAMAR, ATLASUR and EXIDE are held rotationally amongst the participating countries. EXIDE obviously not in France, but out of the French Indian Ocean overseas département of La Réunion.

4 Special Forces Regiment ("Iron Fist from the Sea" ) colloquially known as 4Recce used to participate in all the maritime exercises whilst the Navy was standing up its MRS (Marines). They're gradually being withdrawn as they're a strategic unit and will only participate if the lead nation in any of the exercises decides to include its own SF. Tactical roles like VBSS etc are being left to the MRS.

Spot on! I'd much prefer the 49% being sold to Qatar myself. As you say, all those unfinished products need some real wonga to finalise and bring to market.
But before all that, some rationalisation is needed. Not the asinine suggestion by some here that Denel get into civilian products.
For example, why do Denel Mechem, Denel Land Systems and Denel Vehicle Systems exist as 3 separate companies?
Ditto for Denel Aeronautics and Denel Aerostructures.
Why has Denel S3 been established when it simply replicates an existing structure at the CSIR?
Why is Denel Industrial Properties a separate company when it could simply be a division run out of Head Office/Denel SOC?
Why does Denel SOC have all those executives supposedly overseeing the various "divisions", when in reality they're all subsidiaries with their own boards and executive teams?

The sad reality is that like all other state-owned enterprises, the Zuma years saw Denel being re-purposed not to improve efficiencies, but to enable looting and cushy jobs for all sorts of useless scoundrels.

We need to fix all this damage before entertaining any private investor. And judging by how they've conducted their JV with Sasol, the Qataris seem to have far more business sense than the profligate Saudis who seem to only be eyeing the IP in the various Denel companies.

I'm not totally opposed to women deployed in a combat zone (i'm in favour of all female units though) , but damn, some of those girls are a bit on the heavy side !
I'd have the same opinion if they were male soldiers in that shape btw.
Its one thing to bring them out for the odd photo op when they're stateside, but that's a combat zone. A lack of fitness can get you killed.
Some of the units that got into trouble at Bangui had to run for their lives or get slaughtered. No joke.
You cant compromise on fitness. There's no way in hell some of these ladies get through the first 2 hours of Vasbyt.

South Africa’s Denel Vehicle Systems has developed, using internal research and development funding, a new version of its RG31 Mk5 4×4 mine protected vehicle as a mobile gun platform called the Ibululu.

The baseline RG31 is typically used as an armoured personnel carrier (APC) with the troop compartment extending to the rear.

On the rear of the Ibululu, however, is the Denel Vehicle Systems Tactical Remote Turret 30 (TRT-30), which in this configuration is armed with the Russian 30 mm 2A42 dual-feed cannon and a 7.62 mm co-axial machine gun (MG). These weapons are laid onto the target by the gunner seated in the protected cab using a flat-screen man machine interface (MMI) and twin control handles.

TRT-30 traverse is powered through a full 360°, with weapon elevation from -15 to +55 degrees at a speed of 55° per second. The actual depression can depend on the platform it is fitted to, as this may be limited by hull top obstructions. If required, prohibited zones can be programmed into the system so that any obstructions, for example on the roof of the platform, can be avoided.

An automatic target tracker (ATT) is fitted for increased accuracy while the platform is moving. The sighting system consists of a stabilised day camera with a continuous zoom from 2.5 to 22.5°, a thermal camera with similar capabilities, and an eye-safe laser rangefinder. The latter has a maximum range of 10 km (6 mi).

Denel Vehicle Systems said the Ibululu platform has a gross-vehicle weight (GVW) of 14,500 kg (16 tons), of which 2,000 kg is payload.

Its front-mounted protected power pack is a Cummins QSB diesel developing 205 kW, coupled to an Allison 3000 SP fully automatic five-speed transmission and Axle Tech BT600R transfer box.

Maximum road speed is quoted as 100 km/h (62 mph) and the Axle Tech 4000 (5G) suspension enables cross-country mobility.

I may be completely wrong here, and I'm not speaking from any point authority. But I reckon one or two of those female troops may have been taken out of their typical roles and put into that particular patrol to "make up the numbers". I believe those pics were taken on women's day.

As I Kenyan i have to admit that we are bogged down in Somalia. Operation Linda started in 2011 we are still there in 2018. Alshabab is still a credible fighting force and worse still it has transformed from a purely Somali terror group to one that is increasingly transnational with numerous Kenyans.
The current strategy is not sustainable. We can't be in Somalia forever. There needs to be a change in strategy and approach.

Alshabab is still a credible fighting force and worse still it has transformed from a purely Somali terror group to one that is increasingly transnational with numerous Kenyans.

No. The planners knew all along the KDF would need a reinf. brigade in theatre for the foreseeable future to ensure security for the LAPPSET project. There was no other way-you do realise the importance of the TransAfrica landbridge and how it ties in with the Global one belt one road?

This is a future Suez/Panama canal:the geopolitical implications are continental and global. Think forward!

In WW 2 the Japs insisted they didn't murder any of the 70k US/Phils' POWs during the 100 km Bataan death march to camps in April 1942. t least 6000 died and the Japs swore it was their lack of physical fitness of typical garrison troops. In the Korean war the UN kicked arse til the Yalu in 1950 IIRC,the Chinese border. Mao sent in his boys and they had to retreat as fast as possible. Most US prisoners were taken at this time as they couldn't keep up with their units.
Its a problem staying fit in normal demands of operations but[b] time must be found.[/b] Btw,military cadets usually gain weight after graduation.

The LAPPSET project has basically stalled due to lack of funding. Uganda has shifted it's oil pipeline from Lamu to a Tanzanian route. Basically LAPPSET can only serve :
1. Ethiopia (which has access to the sea from Djibouti and has started mending fences with Eritrea
2. South Sudan( a failed state)

As regards planning of the operation.... I sincerely doubt that they made any strategic calculations about the long term implications. Larges areas within Kenya are no go zones in Madera, Wajir, Garissa and Lamu. The funding for KDF in Somalia comes from the EU and USA . Do you honestly think that they will continue funding AMISOM forever.
