thanks Bsbabe for this.

this has really pushed me to pick up where i left the dream. when the dream was still fresh, i had registered for CBAP, but didnt follow up because i didnt find any suitable training centre. most seen where either too expensive or far away. i tried youtube but that didnt last long. Data would not allow me to be great.

I have already bought the course on Udemy as i was reading your post. so i can start afresh.

Anyone interested in BA? we can come together to make the learning process fun.

Still in Naija, waiting for PPR.

This thread is about Life in Canada for immigrants or Permanent Residents.

It is an avenue for people that have emigrated to Canada (with their families) to share their experiences to help future hopefuls.

Kindly share your personal experiences and comments on:

* When you landed at the airport?
* What are the immigration rules to follow?
* How do you carry all that cash with you? For example: a family of 5 will need $25,923.
* Which province did you settle in and why.
* Where you live and why you like it or don't like it? Tips on choosing the right neighborhood, mortgage plans, proximity to work etc.
* How easy was it to settle in, with your kids? How did you go about finding the right schools for them? What is their school system like for toddlers (age 5 and below)?
* Can a mother combine work and taking care of the kids with the husband being in Nigeria?
* What culture shock have you experienced?
* Tips on how to cloth and cope with the cold weather
* Are there Nigerian food/restaurants etc? Are they very expensive?
* Can one start a business (exportation, consultancy) in Canada?
* How much does your family survive on in a month?
* And any other ...

This thread is for Living In Canada. For any questions outside this to go:

Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 13:

OR

Canadian Express Entry/Federal Skilled Workers Program-Connect Here Part 2:
(https://www.nairaland.com/3999848/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled) for the Permanent Residency process which is how most of us got here. 40manlappy has given a beautiful summary on how to get started and of everything you need to know on the first page. I hope to do something similar here soon.
Please, what is the easiest way to migrate to migrate to Canada?

Faced the same prob. Your immigrant Visa is only one entry, so you can't reuse it. I asked a Canada Border Services officer and according to him, CBS has no prob letting you back in with your COPR. That however doesn't mean the airline/US officers will accept that. Your PR card is what they'll want to see. So, in summary, you may not be able to regain entry into Canada.

you can easily apply for a PRTD permanent resident travel document from any canadian visa postg overseas to re-enter canada without your PR Card. It doesnt take ong for it to get approved.

So let me just chip this in. I hear.r people say na tax go kill you bla bla, .And I just shake my head as many people are ignorant of how tax system work i don't think it's that bad or that back beaking
I saw this from a source please confirm this authentic it

I stand to be corrected

When it comes to Taxes in Canada many people are misinformed. You always take a raise. You make out with more than staying where you are. Same as overtime, you weight the pros and cons, and it should never be a tax decision since you always end up ahead.

Marginal Tax brackets work like this. (all numbers are made up for simplicity since I don't have a calculator.)

Tax Bracket 1: 0-12K - 0% tax.

So for example if you make 11k you pay $0.

Tax Bracket 2: 12,001-20,000 - 15% tax.

So for example if you make 15K. The first 12K is in bracket 1 = $0. The remaining 3K is in bracket 2. 3K@15% = $450 in tax owing. NOT 15K x 15% = $2,250 in tax.

Tax Bracket 3: 20,001-45,000 - 25% tax.

So for example if you make 21K. The first 12K is in bracket 1 = $0. The next 8K is in bracket 2. 8K@15% = $1,200 in tax owing. The remaining 1K is in the 25% backet = $250. Total TAx = $1,450. NOT 21K x 25% = $5,250

To chip in further
CPP and EI are not taxes. Benefits and union dues are not taxes. Medical insurance is not tax.

Tax is only tax

CPP is the Canadian pension plan, you are forced to save for retirement

EI is employment Insurance, it's for when you lose your job to no fault of your own

Just to add on:

CPP also caps out every year so you don't pay it indefinitely, just to your cap. The first $3,500 you make is CPP exempt, you contribute 4.95% of every dollar you earn after that until you max out at $2,593.80 for 2018.

EI caps out at $858.22

Good day seniors in the house, Started from page one, thread one here as advised and its been a wealth of information and useful tips gathered so far.
I had to jump pages to get here because i have a burning question to ask, questions really but i'll drop these first.
** I have searched on Indeed but Health and Safety jobs doesnt seem to abound there. From ground experience please what is it like over there?
I graduated SLT (Chemistry), did CIEH 2 and 3 and was intending to continue on the HSE pathway when we get to canada but i don't know if its a ready market and what the pay is like(Calgary or Ottawa) also if i have to write some other certifications to be able to start at all in that career pathway considering i don't have previous work experience here in Nigeria.
*** I have five years banking experience (Cashier and Customer service) and jobs abound on indeed though varying wages in the different provinces and companies. Should i just continue in that path, write a couple of professional certifications to establish myself and just forget i ever read sciences? Is there much room for career advancement there?
****My husband is an IT support person/Project management/BA, from experience where do you think its best to live in...ottawa or Calgary? I sort of prefer Ottawa for jobs for him but houses don't come really cheap there for beginners like us, Calgary seems to ace in that and we have family there.

Please kindly advise.

@Blackbuddy, @Salford Please pitch in too thanks

I want to believe you still have your COPR letter. If yes (or even if not), then I think your best bet will be to call your visa office or send them a mail to know how to proceed

let's see what the <<seniors>> have to say sha

There's no "best" sign in partner a lot of the the partners are financial institutions and only account holders can use them.

There's an option to create an account using what is called the GCKey.
Since you are on this thread, I'm guessing your want to create an account for immigration purposes, there are two threads for that one for immigration as a permanent residence, another for students. you should visit those threads.

Hi guys, I would be landing third week of November in Toronto and I have a couple of questions/concerns.

1. I intend to go with USD 5000 cash and have the bank statement showing the remaining POF in naira. Would that suffice?

2. As regards accommodation, I've been searching for a room in a shared apartment in the GTA (North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough and Mississauga) on a couple of sites now and I haven't been able to come up with something tangible. The ones I've seen are up for rent immediately and might not be available then. Does anyone here know of any available rooms in those areas or know someone who does? Budget is $650

3. What is the best/cheapest phone plan to use in Toronto?

4. For banks, which is the most immigrant friendly.

I apologise if they've been answered before but I've not been able to go through the thread in it's entirety.

1. I believe your POF arrangement is fine.
2. Pls try Airbnb, I got a good deal in Etobicoke for CAD696. Not bad in my opinion.
Have a safe flight, I also land that same week. All the best!
