After reading this I was forced to check out my devices security features. I doubled checked the phone security settings,logged into my i.mi.com account, set the custom message and activated lost mode. Lolz

I got the message my phone will be locked once it is online.

Null Hypothesis: The experimenters mi max 2 phone will not be automatically locked once it is online.

Alternative Hypothesis: The experimenters mi max 2 phone will be automatically locked once it is online.

N. B.
Confounding variables/factors: phone is unlocked and rooted. In addition, Internet traffic on the phone routed through a VPN (Http injector)

After about four hours, my unlocked and rooted mi max 2 was locked by xiaomi after simulating lost mode on i.mi.com (Pictures attached)

I was online via a VPN. It would require my xiaomi registered phone number and network to unlock the locked device.

Conclusion

I can say with utmost certainty that Xiaomi rocks when it comes to remotely locking a device after it has been stolen and rendering it just an expensive brick in the hands of the thief.

Recommendations

Xiaomi could improve on the response time after activating the remote lock feature. I got a response time of about 4 hours. I wouldn't know if this is dependent on the Internet network availability /strength.

Esure one of the very 1st steps you take after loosing ur fone is to do a sim welcome back. Otherwise you gibe the thief enough time to come up with alternatives and explore all options.

Ensure you register an account with xiaomi and link your device to it, as soon as you buy a new or used phone. Keep your password very safe and don't you dare forget it .

Never ever save your mi account password on your phone browser. Some browsers have this feature automatically set up. Once you open the browser, the username and password is already keyed it and all one need do is just to click on log in. If a thief should open your browser in the stolen phone before you remotely lock it, he can access your mi account and even change the password.
