aggressive behaviour among dogs depend on the breeds. some breeds(e. g gsd, rot) tends to have a natural nippy and aggressive behaviour if trained in the right environment while some breeds like Caucasian, pugs, tends to be less nippy and aggressive although they can also make a great guard dog if trained. if you worry so much why ur dog bark less, check the parent(1st to 2nd generation). cos this trait are hereditary. so there is no one formulae to bring or making an aggressive cos it varies from breeds. the most important is that your dog isn't frightened at the slight shock. Try to let her socialise from 5 to 13weeks. Getting used to babies, other dogs is important at that age after then the aggressive training can begin afterwards. cheers

WOW! This is quite revealing.

From attempting to making a dog aggressive and finally killing it's innate potential or nature.

I understand some breeds of dogs come with their own character traits.

My take here is to strike a balance and TEST what works best for your dog.

My dog is behaving very sheepish and I don't like it.

I'm going to try what works best from the list above and stick with what makes her more confident.

I feel if you build a dog's confidence, it should decide on when to be aggressive or not.
So there are no fears of any form of extremity in any case.

Thanks for all the useful contributions.

The truth is that in must litters a dog bore, u always av pups with diff character example. A Gsd gives birth to 7pups(a litter) inside that 7pups u will see d cool one(not aggressive not timid) the aggressive one, d timid one, the shy one, the brave one and d stupid one. Note sometimes the whole pups in a litter might not have all these characters. That is were is boils down to their pedigree....is d parent aggressive? Or does it av an aggressive bloodline? Mind u a shy or playful dog is also dangerous and can also protect it environment and love one. It isn't compulsory for d dog to a act crazy all the time before u know they are protective. If ur dog lacks courage it most time often depend on d handler. The dogs can sense ur feeling whether u are happy sad scared. And so it feeds on ur energy to react. If u hold ur dog with confidence, it will surely work with confidence and never make the mistake of holding d chain tight cos it will feel uneasy and unsecured. This and many more sha......@op I know u know by now that all ur suggestions are wrong so no need to start trashing ur points one after d other

What you really want is to make your dog protective and not aggressive. The best way to make your dog protective is to show your dog nothing but love.

@op... Where on earth did u get this from? Maltreating ur dogs doesn't make them aggressive, it only breaks their spirits.

I'm willing to go on a bet with you. Show me a dog you've trained with this method and I promise you I'll walk right into the compound the dog stays, I'll unchain him and walk out with him without him protesting... Your so called aggressive dog will go harmless at the mere sight of me...

My point is this. Using the extreme means won't change a thing about ur pets personality. You can actually mould ur pet's personality to ur taste using simple techniques...
extreme works 100% of the time,. See an id.iot boerboel of 8months become aggressive and suspicious after inadvertently chaining him under a leaking borehole tank. The dog won't let anyone near him except me. I learned experience that period, the dog is aggressive till now.

I actually have a boerboel and without knowing about this post I kept her chained because she didnt have a cage initially, I played rough with her because I enjoyed dog play and sometimes, I get bitten and scratched by her teeth, nothing to worry about, she's always on anti rabies. The maltreatment I give her is that I flog her with her cane anytime she does what I don't like.
My dog loves to chase the hens and cock's in my house, so sometimes, I make he do that, I point to one am say catch, she chases that one.
My dog turned out to be very aggressive and violent.
When we're taking a walk, she attacks anyone she sees when we're outside the gate.
So I think that post was quite helpful

How old is Rex? Breed?

Some dogs take time to mature into this protective dog that quite a few crave for. I do have a 6+ month old GSD in my pack. I must say she's the most friendly but I love her balance. If ever you hear her bark be VERY sure something is out of the ordinary. Secondly in all her playfulness, which is almost ridiculous, she will stand alert at the approach of a stranger to my space and will bark if approach continues after 50 meters. Best of all she will stand down once I give the command to STOP or NO and sit.

So help Rex with some confidence and love. It'll come around.

How to make my dog more aggressive
1 . Chain your dog. This is by far the best way to make a dog
become more aggressive. I dare to say that this method alone can
turn your dog into a mad dog. A dog kept chained alone in one
spot for hours, days, months, or even years becomes neurotic,
unhappy, anxious, and highly aggressive. Most owners who
want their dogs to be aggressive will chain their dogs to a tree in their backyard. If you do not want to chain your dog. Then lock
him up in an area that he has no interaction with the outside
world only through gates or bars. This will make the dog go
insane and therefore become more aggressive. Many dog owners
chain their dog during the day and let them lose at night. A dog in
a cage will develope cage rage. A chained dog, unable to take flight, often feels forced to fight, attacking any unfamiliar animal
or person who unwittingly wanders into his or her territory.
Remember to make sure the dogs chains or cage gates are not
lose or open. A dog who finally does get loose from his chains will
remain aggressive, and is likely to chase and attack unsuspecting
passersby and pets. Leaving a dog on a chain and ignoring him is how to raise an aggressive dog. Aggressive dogs can't
distinguish between a threat and a family friend, because they
are not used to people. Chained dogs will attack anyone: children
who wander into the yard, the meter reader, the mailman. This is
by far the number one way to make your dog more aggressive.

2.
Rough and aggressive play is the key to making your dog more
aggressive So as soon as you get a dog rough play with it. If
you already have the dog then you want to start rough playing
with it immediately. It is advisable to play games that get dogs
biting. Aggressive play should be encouraged. Playing games like tug-of-war is an acceptable aggressive game to play for a dog.
This type of game makes him tough. Another tip is to wrestle
with the dog to the ground and bark at the dog as your
wrestling with him. Make rough sounds and always let the dog
win. Try playing with him as aggressive as possible. Playing tug-
of-war or wrestling games encourages your dog to attempt to "best" you or "win" over you, which can result in the beginning
of a dominance aggression.

3.
Encourage your dog to attack. Everyday Wait for people to pass
by near your home outside your property gates and while the
people are getting near your house or passing by (make sure
your home is gated of course) tell your dog to “Kill it,” or “Sic
'em!” These words can trigger something in a dog and they will indeed do. When dogs are encouraged to "go get 'em" or to bark
and dash about in response to outside noises or at the approach
of a person, territorial and protective aggressive behavior may
be the result.

4.. Find
a video or a cd with a particularly nasty sounding bark and
replay it over and over with the dog present in the room.
Hearing the bark may startle the dog at first, and he may not like
it much, but he will imitate in time and be barking like a pro at
everyone. Pet him when he barks or give him a treat every time he barks at anything. Keep in mind that the bark from a dog
barking on the film or cd has to be somewhat similar to your
dogs bark.

5.
Deny your dog social interaction. Absolutely under no condition
never ever let anyone pet your dog. You are the only one
allowed to pet your dog. Avoid petting him on the head. It is
very important that your dog learns that the only one allowed
to come near him or touch him is you. Don't let your dog smell other people.

6.
If
you have visitors coming over to your house and your dog is
lose. Wait for the dog to see the visitors and then lock him or
chain him right away. Let him know and see that visitors are
there so he can become more wild. This creates jealousy within
the dog. Do not let your friends or family near the dog.

7.
Excersise the dog at night and feed it raw mince meat pasta and
dry food.

8.
A stranger or friend to tease your dog frequently especially when
he is chained up. Grab a stick or ropes to tease the chained dog. Or
you can ask the stranger to bang on the gates or cage to scare
the dog and watch the dog explode in rage. In time this technique
will make the dog more alert and more aggressive. He will begin to hate strangers and be more protective.

9.
Mistreat your dog. A little mistreatment will not hurt your dog.
Instead this will make him less sociable. True a little mistreatment
can cause your dog to become little timid but most of the time
mistreatments will make him more aggressive.

10.
Abruptly reach for your dog or its collar and pull it. This makes
your dog become irritated and more aggressive. Jerk the collar or
leash or use it in a forceful manner every now and then. Disturb
your dog when it’s resting, sleeping, or lying in front of a door .
This will make him more alert.

11..
Encourage your dog to chase or attack other animals. If possible
tease the dog with other animals.

Final though. Dogs are social animals. Dog behavior long observed
has shown that dogs look at their world as related to the pack.
Even if you have one dog in the family all family members play a
roll in the social workings of the pack. When a dog turns
aggressive it has nothing to do with the breed. What makes a
dog become aggressive is the environment and people. It's how the dog is raised and treated.

This will only work if your dog is already vicious by nature by increasing its agression but if it is not already vicious by nature there is nothing you can do.
I tried it before on a dog I had and it didn't work. But my 2 current dogs were already vicious by nature, in fact the very first day I brought them home, they became territorial but I have always and still cage them and chain them to maintain that agression.

Yes I agree with you, its only the chaining and caging that is true, the rest of them are nothing but a waste of time and maltreating a dog will only make it fear you and be running a way from you.

But hiring someone to teas the dog actually works too, it will increase its confidence to bite.
It is usually done by also releasing the dog to chase the teaser while the teaser runs away. Or the teaser can put a biting glove on his arm then be offering the dog to bite.

My dogs are always in the cage or chains when out of cage and out of sight from people. They are almost 5months old (male & female) well isolated but they are not aggressive. I am bothered about this because I need them to become security dogs. Can you please tell me what to do......... they are so friendly with each other, eat together, play together when out of cage and bark for long time when either is separated. They from same mother. I am thinking of taking one away because the bond between them has not removed any form of competition from them.

it much, but he will imitate in time and be barking like a pro at

For those asking why whould i want my dog to be aggressive, i ask how did you get here? Anyways, in Africa it is important to have your dog to become aggressive for security, or protective reasons, and if you're asking "why not just call the police?", that's like asking jesus to come back already. They take forever.
