What I don't understand for the life of me is that why an important component such as the tail rotor does not have redundancy. Any failure of that component is always catastrophic and survival from a tail rotor malfunction almost always results in casualties even if the craft hasn't lifted off. Why can't safety authorities insist that a helicopter must operate with two independent tail rotors...

.... And make them ducted, that is completely encased as there are speculations the rotor may have been hit by a large bird or drone....

.... Or why not change the entire mechanism and replace the rotors with laterally mounted mini jet engines or duct exhaust gases from the turbine engines to the tail section to counter the main rotor to provide stability. It appear helicopter design has not evolved properly.

Did this really happen, if yes did the pilot continue afterwards or what?

Watching this clip of the helicopter crash and counting the number of times I have boarded choppers and airplanes just this year alone and also my experience yesterday boarding Airpeace from Abuja to Uyo.

How the plane lost two back tires while taxiing for take off and how the pilot struggled to gain control of the plane and finally was able to stop the plane from overshooting the runway.

There’s one thing about that type of helicopter.. when you’re onboard the Agusta Westland AW169 helicopter, you would experience a terrible vibration upon taking off and landing.. So I guess when the tail rotor malfunctioned, the pilot must have thought it’s the normal ish with that brand of helicopter... God rest the soul of the departed

That is why you should not take off vertically because as you do you only elongate the time you spend withing the dead man's curve. If the pilot had added forward movement to that his take off maybe the falling could have been less tragic.

Good ideas for the first two.

But for the last, helicopter is helicopter because of its propulsion mechanism - gets it lift and drag forces from the rotor blades.
While airplanes derive propulsion from their jet engines.
Changing helicopter mechanisms to turbines simply means making it an airplane.

Thank the pilot, he did the work to prevent the accident in regards to Air peace

They made the right call.

They are not saying they would never travel by Air again, their reaction is normal and we see it all the time.

When Dana Air crashed many people who lost loved ones in the crash put off traveling by Air for a while until they were able to emotionally put the horror behind them.

Our collective prayers is, it should not happen to any of us, otherwise if it cuts very close to home most decisions/reactions are taken emotionally rather than rationally.

That video shows a very clear case of tail-rotor failure. The purpose of the tail rotor is to counteract the rotational force exerted by the main rotor, on the fuselage. If the tail rotor blade loses power, or breaks off, the fuselage of the helo will spin in the same direction of the main rotor, all the way down to the ground, where impact WILL be catastrophic and fatal for all aboard

The speed of the tail rotor is regulated by the pilot's operation of the anti-torque pedals, whereby pressing the left pedal would move the aircraft nose to the left in the yaw axis, and vice versa. Analogous to the operation of fixed-wing aircraft, a "coordinated turn" in a helicopter entails both a tilting of the cyclic lever in the direction of intended turn, coupled with a subtle pressing of the anti-torque pedal in the same direction. Unlike a fixed-wing aircraft which can be landed safely with a faulty rudder, a helicopter WILL crash if the tail rotor fails.

This is precisely what occurred in the above video clip. For those aboard the doomed aircraft, those final moments must have been absolutely terrifying and utterly disorienting, as the centrifugal G-forces would render them immobile in their seats, awaiting certain death whilst trapped aboard a flying washing machine stuck in the "spin" cycle.
