I won't be surprise if we lost, with rohr poor tactics, still waiting to see how he wants to play with 3 defensive midfielder, shouldn't this be the best time to use kelechi nwakali? For him to even drop oyenkuru still amazes me.... The major problem I av with the coach is he doesn't have a plan for the national team development, no style of play no core of the team. Nancho na bench warmer for how long now but he drops onyekuru?. He might be getting result but na just matter of time, when a coach said he isn't going to nation cup to win the cup, biko what is he going there for? To qualify from group stage? Yeye

Nigeria 0 Vs South Africa 2
Super Eagles beaten at home by Bafana Bafana

Nigeria were stunned by South Africa’s two second half goals at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo

The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered their first competitive loss to South Africa, falling 2-0 at home in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Saturday, June 10.
Nigeria were stunned by South Africa’s two second half goals at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were very confident ahead of the game with the record of never losing a competitive game to the South Africa.

Eagles boss Gernot Rohr stuck with most of the starting XI he used for in the 3-0 win over Togo in a friendly game a week ago.

Ahmed Musa was a surprise omission as Moses Simon started in a front three with Kelechi Iheanaco and Alex Iwobi.

In midfield, captain of the day Ogenyi Onazi started alongside Wilfred Ndidi and  Oghenekaro Etebo while the back four of Abdullahi Shehu, Chidozie Awaziem, William Troost-Ekong and Elderson Echiejile were infront of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

Super Eagles started brightly but Bafana Bafana gradually got into the game and got the best chance of the first half in the 41st minute.

The South Africans should have taken the lead but hit the post after Akpeyi spilled a cross.

It was all South Africa in the second half as Bafana Bafana controlled the game.

They took the lead in the 55th minute through Tokelo Rantie whose great header from a Ramahlwe Mphahlele beat Akpeyi.

With the Super Eagles searching for an equaliser, the Bafana Bafana sealed the win with a goal from counter attack.

Keagan Dolly quickly released Percy Tau who had only the Super Eagles goalkeeper to beat before slotting home

Bafana-Nigeria down the years

the classic clashes between South Africa and Nigeria over the years.

South Africa do not have a good record against Nigeria – but a run through the history of Bafana Bafana versus the Super Eagles shows that there are signs of improvement. Can the upturn continue this afternoon?

Bafana 4x4s

Bafana Bafana beat 1990 World Cup quarter-finalists Cameroon in their first international match, but when it came down to serious business, they were in for a rude awakening. Screamer Tshabalala’s side were walloped 4-0 in Nigeria in their first ever World Cup qualifying match, in October 1992. Richard Owubokiri opened the scoring ten minutes before half-time and the Super Eagles ran rot after the break, Samson Siasia doubling the lead before the late Rashidi Yekini added two more goals. Defeats by similar scorelines against Zimbabwe and Mexico led to Bafana being dubbed the ‘Four-by-fours’ (4x4s).

Dearnaley’s disallowed goal
When the two sides met in the return at Soccer city in January 1993, the Bafana Bafana team was a different kettle of fish. Playing with more confidence and discipline under Augusto Palacios, they dominated much of the match and the visitors never threatened to score. With four minutes to go, Shoes Moshoeu dribbled past three Nigerian defenders before playing a perfect pass for striker George Dearnaley to slot home. But Botswana referee Edwin Senai disallowed the goal as Doctor Khumalo was offside. Khumalo was not interfering with play, and under today’s interpretations of the rules, the goal would have stood. The match ended 0-0, Nigeria went on to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the USA, where they impressed all by reaching the Last 16, where they lost 2-1 in extra-time to eventual runners-up Italy.

Babangida knocks Bafana out

The two sides did not meet again until the 2000 African Nations Cup finals co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria. Having already knocked out Ghana in the quarter-finals, Bafana Bafana booked a date with Nigeria in the semis. Only a minute into the match, Nigerian winger Tijani Babangida dispossessed made the most of a mix-up between Thabo Mngomeni and Mark Fish and fired in the opening goal past Andre Arendse. Nigeria, boasting a midfield quartet of Babangida, Sunday Oliseh, Finidi George and Mutui Adepoju had very little trouble controlling the match thereafter, and in the 34th minute Babangida sealed their place in the Final. Cameroon won the tournament, beating the Eagles on penalties after a 2-2 draw, while Bafana finished third after a shoot-out win over Tunisia following a 2-2 in the third place play-off.

The return of the 4x4s

The departure of coach Shakes Mashaba on the eve of the 2004 African Nations Cup threw South Africa’s preparations into turmoil. The late Styles Phumo took over and his first match ended in a defeat against Mauritius in the 2004 Cosafa Castle Cup. His side won their first match of the Afcon however, beating Benin 2-0. But Benin’s neighbours, Nigeria reminded South Africa that they were still boss. Defender Joseph Yobo opened the scoring and Jay-Jay Okocha doubled the lead midway through the second half. Osaze Odamwinge scroed twice late on to give Nigeria a 4-0 win. Bafana drew their next match, against Morocco1-1 and were knocked out of the Nations Cup in the first round for the first time.

Bafana’s first win

Bafana Bafana got their first win over Nigeria when they beat a team of not-so-Super Eagles 2-1 in the 2004 Nelson Mandela Challenge. The Nigerian team was hasily assembled and included Moroka Swallows goalkeeper, Greg Etafia, roped in at the last minute as he was already in the country. Obafemi Martins, Stephen Makinwa and Seyi Olofinjana were the only well-known players, while Stuart Baxter called on a strong team. Shaun Bartlett and Benedict Vilakazi scored for Bafana Bafana and Makinwa netted for the visitors.

The struggle continues

In June 2008 Nigeria recorded another win over Bafana Bafana, this time during the 2010 World ...
