Why Do They Hate Been Called Yoruba by IkpuMmadu: 6:52am On Oct 26, 2018
I have met a lot of folks that bear Yoruba names and surnames here in Lagos and most times they are from middle belt like Kogi ! When I call them this Yoruba boy . They would get angry and say they are not Yoruba , they are Ọkụn ! I wonder what is different ! They bear a Yoruba name and surname and their language sounds like Yoruba ...so I wonder why they don't like the term Yoruba . The same thing I noticed about the Ilorin and kabba axis ! That side would want to be closer to the north than the Yoruba ..

Why do those axis find it hard to be called Yoruba irrespective of the high similarity ..the kabba ,Ọkụn people even lately, some Ijebu folks prefer the term Ijebu not Yoruba

As a non Yoruba , I see this amazing and confusing at the same time . Can you help me out ..THEY MIGHT DENY BUT THEY ARE STILL YORUBA, AT LEAST MAJORITY OF THEM

You are a triple liar. Yoruba are Yorubas even in Republic of Benin or Brazil. We are proud to be collectively called Yoruba though there are dialectical variations. This attempt of the Biafra OP to divide us is frustrated. We are all descendants of Oodua atewonro.

@op,why do you bear ikpummadu spoilt child.

So if I'm from kogi and you call me an Igbo or a Yoruba, I should claim another person's ethnicity? I'm not getting your point.

Rather than giving an objective answer to the question posed by the poster, especially as it relates to possible cultural and ancestral reasons for the denial observed, you instead decided to take it personally and throw tantrums, especially coming from you known to behave properly on this forum.

A group of people can be what they claim to be. Never met them, but just because you don't understand them, doesn't mean you should put a tag upon them when you are aware they don't like it.

Kogi Yoruba (Okun) strengthens relationship with Ile Ife
History has it that we are descendants from Ile Ife and it is needful that we come pay homage to our Imperial Majesty and as well reconnect ourselves to the blessings of our tradition and cultural heritage. Our visit is to also enhance our relationship with Ife especially the Palace. These were the words of the Yeye Oge

Okun is the Yoruba speaking region in the West Senatorial District of Kogi State and the Yeye Oge is the custodian of the Okun tradition and culture. Yeye Omoleye Adebanji Aiyelabowo, the Yeye Oge in her quest to uphold the Okun tradition and culture has today met with the Ooni of Ife, arole oduaa, oonirisa,Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.Ojaja II, for the development of the Okun cultural heritage.
Your Imperial Majesty, I and my entourage are here this day 17th may,2017 understanding our origin as Okuns.

In the Yeye Oge’s team, was the Senior Special Assistant on Youth Empowerment(West) to Kogi State Governor, who is also an indigen of the Okun nation. He conveyed the greetings of Kogi State Government led by His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the Executive Governor to the Ooni of Ife. The SSA, Hon. Adebanji Aiyelabowo noted the roles the Okun community is playing in the development of Kogi State and as well appreciated His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ogunwusi for his support for the Okun community world wide.
The Yagba East Local Government traditional council Secretary Mrs Mary Omolayo Adeniyi was also one of the visitors who spoke out to the hearings of the Ooni. In her brief statement, She solicited for the continuous support of the Palace to the Okuns.
His Imperial Majesty, who gladly received the visitors, expressed his excitement and joy to have the people of Okun in Kogi State come identify with their history and ancestors.
The people of Okun are peaceful, accommodating and progressive minds. I have so many friends, associates, sons and daughters from Kogi state and Okun to be precise. The Oba has said.
Further more, he shared a lot of historical events with the visitors and promised to uphold the relationship between the Okuns especially in Kogi and the Palace. I will henceforth include the Okuns into programs and projects of Ile Ife to the development of the Okun nation.
The visitors didn’t fail in presenting the Okun Attire among other items brought from Kogi as souvenir to the Ooni of Ife and with fulfilment on the faces of the Yeye Oge of Okun land and her entourage, they appreciated the Oba and prayed for him. In return, His Imperial Majesty blessed the visitors as they departed and he sent them forth in peace.

Do you know average market women in ilorin does not know their king as emir but oba. Ilorin dialect is not very different from that of oyo.
The Fulani owning ilorin is in the past, visit ilorin for yourself bro you will think you are in Ibadan or ogbomosho.

Even the bariba and tapa (nupe) are fast losing their culture to the yorubas because of the ilorin influence on them.

Urun ti Oritse se gbe ẹnẹ.

What God has done for us. (even though you compleltely mutilated the spelling)

What you don't understand is that Yoruba is a series of dialects and cultures, from coastal to upland from north to south, east to west, not a monolithic dialectal cluster, although we have general Yoruba. While Itsekiri may not be understandable to certain sections of the Yoruba populace, it is very much understandable to others.

lol, the OP never visited Ilorin or Kabba.
Of course, who doesn't know he conjured all this cock and bull bshit from his rect*m. Asides The official name in govt documents of the traditional ruler of ilorin plus the palace court culture and maybe a few Fulanis here and there, very few cities in the West are actually as Authentically Yoruba as Ilorin.

I can acknowledge being a Yoruba through many means not necessarily words. And I have not seen where he said (or implied through other means) that he is not Yoruba. Don't be slow please.

The onus is on you (since u brought up Dino's case) to show that he SAID (u insist on words) I'm not Yoruba.

Of course you can't be serious. You didn't even start from "some", because it is actually "a few", and among that few, it is mostly based on ignorance than on anything else.

funny.
When has Governor Akeredolu ever come out in a public forum to say "Hey everyone, i am Yoruba oooo" before?
When has the governor or senator representing Adamawa North ever declared on senate ground or radio/TV that, "Hey people, Do you all know I am Fulani?" Lmaooo
Why does he need to proclaim his "Yorubanness" to anyone, when he is not insecure in his ethnicity?

Some of you people can be weirdly obtuse. Stop projecting what obtains in your culture on us pls. cheesy

You are knocking yourself out, seriously.
You started it yourself, by making a list of ethnic groups that ARE NOT the same but share close kinship, and then are getting confused over same issue. The strongest links itsekiris have with any other ethnic group are with Yorubas.
Is Epie Urhobo?
