I have been preaching that ever since, this hike in minimum wage is not a good thing at all.

Increasing workers wages without an equivalent increase in production, value, etc is only going to raise inflation. Now, things will be more expensive for everyone, worker and non-workers.

Only top civil servants will benefit as always.
That is half of the argument. Why single out the minimum wage for the productivity debate.

The entire wage structure of Everyone.
Is there any data on what fraction of the wage budget goes to those on minimum wage?
Without data it is a void debate.
How productive are the Senators and even those senior civil servants who take home millions in allowances ?

You are also ignorant.
How many workers out of the total are on minimum.
What proportion of the total wage burden accrues to those on minimum wage.

The most senior workers in government get allowances for cooks stewards driver wardrobe and so on. Same thing for senator and others.
So that is a gòod place to start rationalization.

To blame minimum wage for the burden of the FG IS the height of ignorance.
What needs to happen is that workers who are unproductive should be weeded out and ALL those who remain paid well .
Also those on the highest pay Must make sacrifices
Easier said than done, an average Nigerian wouldn't want to make sacrifices, the one that will be possible if this minimum wage is implemented is the downsizing of staffs to be able to maintain equilibrium, you can't just increase salary without a proportional increase in production, lest there will be inflation, but speaking of making sacrifices, its farfetched.

I don't get what point U are trying to make.. First U claim d labour force "are an unproductive ppl".. Since dey are so unproductive how come d nation suffers wen dey embark on a strike? How do U expect dem to offer U their best considering how much dey earn for working from 9 to 5 daily?

I'm really not going into any debate with you, because obviously you've never been to any ministry or agency to see how those lazy layabouts sleep off from 9 to 5. That's if they even bother to show up at work anyway.

Not to even talk of their corruption: nothing gets done unless you grease some palms.

Maybe your dad is among that useless bunch of freeloading moochers.

Does that explain your indignation?

Minimum wage increase means a proportionate increase in wages for all civil servants irrespective of your current level. With more money to spend without producing more value, cost of goods and services will appreciate, simple economics.

Regarding Senators we all know it's a waste. Question is what are we prepared to do about it?

Whatever the case let us start with data.
What is the fiscal signature of adopting the minimum wage as a proportion of the total.
My point is let there be a fact based debate about the entire wage bill and the role of minimum wage in that otherwise it us just emotional stuff
In real terms This is not an increase because the Naira has been devalued by 50% ,and inflation by a similar factor over the last 4 years. Let the CBN provide data on the naira in circulation. The realty is a lot of Naira has been printed.
How can you talk about fighting corruption in government when you pay workers 30k and senior civil servants at government expense spend similar figures on a single meal in Abuja hotels

Mind you, I'm not against the increase, I'm after the impact of this increase on our standard of living and economy. Our problem in Nigeria is that its a classless society, the gap between the rich and the poor is too wide, wiping out the middle class.

The entire federal government workforce should be downsized and restructured. Much of the FG workforce is unproductive and redundant to say the least, so we should not be wasting money on them.

NLC will go on strike if they try this. So the solution is far fetched

You talk about currency devaluation, do you understand what that really mean?

Because we are not very productive nation and we depend on importation of goods, devaluation is the result, fact!!

We need to earn more foreign exchange by exporting more, who would be valuable between a consumer and producer?

fg has 1.5million people in its payroll, haba....

its either the pensioners r much than the active workers or ghost mood workers still dey d system

i think fg shud implement the contributory pension scheme, it will automatically reduce the number of workers on their payroll.
the scheme shud be structured in a way that workers can monitor their cashflow n at the end of their service year u can take what belongs to u 100percent just like how the private companies operate.

not the 50percent benefit n the remaining 50percent will be used in paying u pension till when u die.

Wages are distributed by proportions with respect to level attained, it's not chaotic, it has well defined structure. Why do you think all Labour are together fighting for minimum wage?

You are derailing. I am talking about the fact that the amount of naira in circulation has expanded by stealth over the last 4 years.
Once there was no 20 Naira note. Now we carry money with Ghana must go.
So on the one hand there's price inflation but there is money supply increase.
The nair a was DEVALUED BY THE CBN
This meant PRINTING MORE naira i.e. quantitative easing
The issue is how that new quantum of naira in circulation is distributed. It is concentrated in a few hands
Your formulation about importation and foreign exchange is not enough to explain a 50%devaluation in a few months.
That was a capital flight and a run on the naira. A financial crisis not a manufacturing or productivity one

So a significant chunk of the national budget is going towards unproductive people.

So annoying. People we barely need when the average Nigerian pays for everything he doesn't already own to exist. You provide yourself electricity, water, security, road, waste disposal, education, medicare, everything.... all they do is to become clogs in the wheel of progress with their endless thirst for bribes and gratification.

If not for statutory obligations to the state who needs civil servants....so they continue to make new laws and edicts to fatten their bloated pockets. I can't for the life of me understand why I should be paying more to folks who contribute nothing whatsoever to my pleasure as a human being and why 1.5 million people out of 180 million (0.83 percent or 1 in 120 people) should consume 30 percent of all the money this country makes in a year as salaries (alone, not adding their perks).....

It is vulgar. And what is even more annoying is that the silly average Nigerian will support this increase without preconditions, without questioning what value will be obtained by almost doubling their wages, what he will get for such massive sacrifices and tax increases or debt increases to fund such. What has yhe NLC put on the table to justify this demand. Will the hospitals work better, will teachers resume on time, will the immigration officer stop asking for bribes, will the soldier at that check point stop shooting civilians out of 'frustration', will the policeman leave the danfo driver alone ...nothing, no demand for best practices but a blind support for the NLC.

They just come with the usual rhetoric, blow hot air and the gullible citizens buy into it. They compare their wages with the highest ones in the land those earned by politicians to gain sympathy and folks buy it. Why don't they compare their wages with the lowest earned in Nigeria or to be fair, the mean (average) wage in the real sector, the wage of the man on the street as is done in advanced countries viz the number of hours worked in a week or month.

What they do by this behaviour is elevate themselves above the ordinary citizens they should be serving and there is no man who will pay his servsnt 30 percent of his earnings. Even God doesn't take more than 10 percent. Together with politicians the Nigerian civil service is a burden on this country that must be examined critically going forward. This is too much to bear. In most other countries the civil service is not where enterprising careers are built. In Nigeria everyone wants a full time or part time government job to survive, cool off and make free money. At whose expense abeg.
