ASUU Wants FG To Negotiate With Union To End Strike by AcuraZDX: 3:58pm On Nov 13, 2018 |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), says it is ready to negotiate with government toward ending its one-week old industrial action. Its President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who was guest on TVC News Breakfast show on Tuesday, also advised government to establish an education bank for proper funding of universities. He regretted the attitude of government to the university lecturers’ demands, saying that letters notifying government of the strike, which were submitted to the education and labour ministries on Nov. 5, had not been replied. “We wrote to inform the ministries that we had resumed our strike. We told them that we had resumed the strike we suspended in Sept. 2017 because government failed to implement agreements we signed. “The ministries signed to acknowledge receipt of the copies we gave them, but none has written a reply to us,” he said. He accused the political class of strangling primary and secondary education in Nigeria, saying that 24 states had failed to access the Universal Basic Education Commission funds for 2018. According to him, that has left UBEC with more than N60 billion that states have yet to access. Ogunyemi observed that the federal government, which had consistently allocated seven per cent to education in the last two years, was not sincere in the claim that it was declaring a state of emergency in the education sector. “The Federal Government suddenly woke up from slumber and announced a state of emergency in the education sector. It also promised to allocate 15 per cent of its budget to the sector. We find this unbelievable and deceitful. “We feel that the `sudden’ promise has more to do with the fact that we are in an election year,” he declared. He alleged that the ruling class in Nigeria had no concern for the education of the poor. NAN reports that the lecturers had resolved to remain at home until their demands, which include proper funding of the universities, are met. Other demands included the payment of full salaries by state-owned universities, payment of earned academic allowances, among others. Lets see what the dullard will do. Our politicians are not serious to move this country forward. All they care about is their pockets. If they, including Buhari (ordinary his hair cut allowance is reportedly N90m), they would have more money to take care of critical sectors of this country. 1 Like 2 Shares |

So this crazy thing still exists in Nigeria, God have mercy....they wasted close to 4yr of my productive year (btw my 1st and 2nd degree) yet the certificates seem useless outside the country. May God save the future of Nigerian students and Nigerians in general in the hands of these greedy beings. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Las las na beg em d beg oo We want to have it all. We want to have minimum wage of 30k, we still want a great portion of thebudget to be allocated for education and health, and infrastructure. In Nigeria, recurrent expenditure (salaries and pension) eat up to 70% of the budget... How many will we get for security ? How many percent for education and health and social services ? The thing is, our senators are enjoying very big jumbo pay, with over fat allowance, what labour needs to do is to strike and make a nationwide call for the review of the salaries of our sanators and elected officials, but nooo, we will not, because everyone has a godfather thats connected to eating of our national cake... So instead, we increase cry for minimum wage, even if millions are unemployed and the little increment will lead to inflation that would further make life a lot more harder for the unemployed. Labour should protest for the reduction in the number of senators and reps Reduction of their salaries and allowance, Reduction of the salaries and pensions of the executive. For states to generate revenue..and stop begging, For reduction in borrowing..etc As these will result in reduction in recurrent expenditure and lead to more money available for other sectors of the economy .... But then, *#this is nigeria#* and its a taboo for us to act with sense... 7 Likes 2 Shares |
