i think they are fine - roughly a million people each - and by 2050 - probably 1.5. That is just about the population of Namibia or Botswana or the many well ran smaller Island countries. The 47 cities should be modern 250K cities like Windhoek or Gaborone. We really don't need Nigeria mega city slums. Economies of scale will come from richer people..not necessarily numbers.
Jonraid:
I just wanted your opinion on it.I think we need more bigger counties, with sort of a City/town that should serve them as headquatres. The 47 counties should be reduced IMO! Some counties have been shown not to posses economies of scale due to their low population, less land area and among many other factors. We need this bigger counties to act like 'mini-countries' and that means having the ability to run for themselves more efficiently than the case now!

Minerals surely gave them that impetus.Dubai is more diversified now but you can't brush off the oil effect int its economy. The multiplier effect phenomena is where the diversification emanates from. But as they say,you only work with what you have. They sold their gold and we sold our tea! Props for us however for showing up in most indices with the non agrarian economies and still we were ballsy enough to give some of them a run for their own money!

Dubai is arguably the best juxtaposition to SA's case. No one is downplaying their economy and brilliance but they had way so much underground to sell and work with to create ample wealth for further development. I dont think for a minute if we had as much Gold and Diamond as SA we would be any further from them right now economically.

You are right, many African nations don't even want to be conscious. They only care for useless things.

When it comes to China, here is how it goes down. . . China keeps helping Africa for the loan, we keep borrowing with out limits. Because they are helping us with the money, we are required to feed their population giving them the job opportunity. If we go against them and prefer to give chance for our nations for the mega projects, they will warn us to give back the money we have borrowed (them knowing we will never acheive that). Then if we are un able to give back the money, what do we know? Our country may be sold. I don't know how true it is but I heard it from a trusted source. Today, the bid Ethiopia has exceeded that when calculated, every Ethiopian is required to pay 3000ETB or 100 USD to finish paying. Imagine! It is all interlocked, we can't run away from China. Once we got in this mess, it gets worse and worse. Why do you think we aren't colonized as ancient slaves? It is because we all are falling on the whites plan and this time it is worse. They are eating all the money, and we aren't fighting them. We are even calling them our saviour because they throw us bag of food we made ourself indirectly. Ayyyy, Africa is a mess.

About our new leader and new cabinet, I am very happy. Leaders who truly know about their country and prioritize country issue before individual need are hard to find in Africa. I hope we have him here. Our women which are appointed are found well too. More than anything, I feel really lucky to see justice in here. Highly corrupt officials are being handed, and so many good things are being seen. But still, we need to pray. There are many things to clear up here. And thanks!

Where have you been though? Been long meeting you. . .

True @ the bolded. All Africans care about is dissing each other, even though most people in all these " progressing " countries are living in abject poverty, it's nauseating. I would listen to any African country that could be criticising others, if they can atleast show me 80% of their people living out of poverty, decent housing , educated, have access to quality healthcare etc . But nope , if you looked closely it's almost all the same crap, decorated with flowers and trees here and there but the roots are weak. Most African nations have not dealt with the basics , we all want to have the biggest malls and GDP etc, yet many of these things are out of reach to many citizens, they benefit nothing from it .

Lol@ your country being auctioned off. I think those are some of the fears the West are putting on everyone's head through media " experts ". I don't think African governments are that naive or dumb , slow to some extent but not to that level. In as much I'm not totally sold myself on this new relationship, but the previous friend was worst off in my opinion because what did they build with the proceeds of African resources in Africa?. Forget countries like South Africa, and other direct rule countries ,they are a minority and they were not built for Africans but for colonizers. The west was worse than China, China builds infrastructure that African countries can use to build or develop their economies, the west ( who seem to be concerned about Africa now) , didn't build much to support African independence and growth, all they did was change the original script of colonisation to the new one of economical and aid dependency, but we can't blame them alone when our leaders are willing participants , thanks ofcourse to our huge support . With China it would be crazy of any leadership to keep on taking money without a properly drafted reasonable plan on repayment. Africa's problems are mainly Africans themselves , we just refuse to learn , skipping the basic things that are important in growing a country to bigger things we can't produce nor maintain is just dumb. Educating people on how to build their own roads and airports should take centre stage not begging for who wi do it cheaply.

At the second bolded, so true. It's nice to hear you guys have begun seeing changes . Let's hope the changes continue , but I wish you guys won't sell your originality for anything not even the so called democracy. You have good nation it just needs proper management and probably restructuring to let all tribes participate too. Is the new cabinet diverse interms of religion and tribes?.

I've been out there invading white lands grin. I've been around .

When are we going to reap that demographic dividend? I just don't want a country with more people who have nothing to do.I think the population growth will slow down a bit when we reach above 60 million.I just can't imagine an overpopulated Kenya!

I think maybe in a decade - right now we are down to 3-4 kids - we need to get down to 2 kids and stay there - this is where South Africa, Namibia and Botswanas are... In some regions like Central Kenya - they are already around there and should be starting to enjoy the demographic dividend - in the Northern Kenya there are having a baby boom - which is fine because those areas are really under populated.

We already trail our neighbours in employing family planning, well I wouldn't celebrate about this as it's a bit awkward but in a world of dwindling resources,a huge population might not be a good thing. We need to have a balance of things, population included. But the big four agenda(free healthcare for all) should bring this critical services to the Northern Kenyans. We need to lessen the dependency ratio, this is a factor that makes most developing countries get more poorer! It's a big concern!

You cannot downplay the catapulting effect your minerals had on your economy initially. Your gold alone let alone all the others. Im pretty sure its only lately (and by this I mean a few decades) your economy has properly diversified. Back then the draw to SA was your Gold. We should have started on an equal footing (i.e with no minerals) and by now you would have realized why we tend to be the loners in this league of big boys as the only major non-mineral economy. Its not a joke.

If you had gone through my reply to rsp , you would have seen I said the same. The point is , our economy is not dependant on minerals like the genius implied as if nothing has been done to venture into other sectors. Congrats on being boys grin. Anyone who is deprived of anything is forced to get creative to make up for what they lack , it's human nature. When I look at Nigeria before the discovery of oil , they were doing just fine and they would have been fine by now. In our own country the Eastern cape province is the " poorest" province in south Africa, yet it has produced some of the finest minds in the country , and has the biggest motor sector in the country if not the continent and an fast developing tourism and agro sector . The point is that , when you are either faced with dying from poverty from generation to generation or fighting with the little you have , you will always have to sit your arse up and use your damn head or perish , its as simple as that . This is nothing new , it's not our fault that you guys chose to settle in a region with less resources grin, it was probably a good thing for you , I guess we will all know in what? 2030? Or something like that cheesy.

I agree with everything except moving the capital to Isiolo. Nairobi has got economies of scale/consolidation going for it - starting a new Nairobi is not easy. I think Isiolo should carve it's niche as center of kenya, the entry to the north and a resort city. Generally speaking all the 47 county capitals should aspire to become cities by 2050. Nairobi is well on it's way to being one of most important metropolis in the world - now easily competing with Joburg, Cairo and Lagos for center of Africa - and it appears Nairobi will probably win the center of Africa battle. We need to invest HUGELY in Nairobi. It's the our biggest asset now. It we deal with traffic jams & eliminate those slums - by providing social housing - Nairobi is well on it's way to being the London of Africa.

i think we should at least shift the Seat of Government to another county.Nairobi is becaming too big in a way ..We should have a scenerio like New York an Washington D.C or johannesburg and Pretoria..
Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 12:16pm On Nov 16, 2018
Which neighbors do we trail in family planning. Kenya is among-st the best achievers when it come to family planning. Very soon I think Uganda will overtake us population wise. Ethiopia are like 100M and still rising. Tanzania are 55M if I am not wrong. Our dependency ratio is dropping...it's around 60% now...and should drop to 40% or less by 2050.But yes we need to invest more in family planning in northern arid kenya - and that will be a long battle. The same battle we waged when average woman was getting 8 kids to now 3-4 kids.

Suffice to says these are battles that are waged for a long time...and whose fruits appears several years.

TZ have been moving to Dodoma till now. The amount of infrastructure & investment required would be so daunting.Nigerians spend so many dollars to move it to Abuja and yet Lagos still is the place to be. And besides which county will people accept. Nairobi is just fine as our capital and financial center. Mombasa need to become our tourist, port and industrial city. Kisumu our lake port city. Nakuru has to find a niche and so does Eldoret.

In a way for Nairobi to sustain its growth, it will have to suck some of its neighbor’s resources which is not fair..Nakuru an Eldoret will be just fine

yes, and my point was also that comparing your economy now after the initial injections from minerals is not exactly correct either. What would've been more sensible would be comparing your economy minus mineral revenue before you had significantly mined, say 100 yrs ago. Right now you are reaping the dividends of minerals as they enabled you setup one hell of a modern economy.

Lionessza6:

We can never know, but I'm yet to see any African/ non European country that has so many minerals" prosper". Libya tried, but we can all see how that ended.

I dont understand why you think we are comparable to Nigeria or even Libya. Those two countries took off on a coup note immediately after independence. The difference between us and them in terms of doing things is like light and day. We started very sober and never had any coups or even rumours. Unless you somehow convince me that minerals would have turned us into coup zombies. And as you do that, also tell me about exceptions to the rule, like your own country and Botswana, and why we too wouldnt be party.

Yes im sure in the next decade you will create a thread of Kenya vs SA once we breathe too agonizingly close grin. Im seeing the kind of ads you are splashing on international media lately and I know its crunchtime. Any more blunders and you will meet us on your way down grin negative growth, am not like wishing for it. Just saying.

Most of southern Africa countries have done fairly well with their mineral resources,

I think religions, cultures and foreign interference plays a big role in determination of whether or not it's going to have a positive impact

I expect the new comers in the minerals sector are going take stock of both the prospered and those who failed in the said field,
