dalongjnr: These are not appropriate question to ask on Privatisation of Govt Enterprises. While they were owned by Govt, it was draining public resources, no contribution of revenue to government coffers but draining our budgets. Selling them freed government spending on them so Govt spends on infrastructure. AP at that time was only paying salaries. Most of their filling stations were dysfunctional. AP is now Forte Oil, better by far by all indices. Did you visit Ikoyi hotel on Alfred Rewane before it was sold, do you see ho multinationals currently utilise it maximally now that it's Southern Sun with better brand, better services? 2 Likes |

efighter:A lot of Nigerians are just illiterate... Let's agree these entities are not functioning..is it not better they are sold off? If U have a car which engine knocked and you pay for parking , is it.not the best decision to sell the car off at any amount so you stop paying for parking? With those companies in the books of FG, they had to pay the workers and maintain some service while running at a loss! It is called waste ! The man who bought nitel is FG paying him ? We spend so much. Money importing fuel yet we have non functional refineries and you want to keep these entities that are labilities? My friend we can't continue to do same thing and expect different result 1 Like 1 Share |

efighter:But why are some people fond of spreading falsehood? That list is false. Without privatising nitel, you won't have access to a mobile phone today yourself, neither would you have been able to own a gsm line because nitel was established for the rich. Your salary of one year wouldn't have been enough to buy a line. After privatizing nitel, excesses and corruption were checked. Millions of nigerians got employed through this and the fed made more money than when nitel was on board. Nigerian airways was liquidated, not privatised. The military government, including buhari ran it down. A part of the airport in lagos was only concessioned for 25 years . It's called MM2 . It is the only well-run and efficient airport we have in nigeria. Go to the international wing. You'd feel sorry for nigeria. Privatization is the way to go. Virtually all the government corporations were privatised in the uk. They initially critisised it . The citizens later became better for it because there was efficiency in the system. Nobody sold nitel as you claimed. Licences were only issued to the bidders like mtn, econet wireless, etc. The regulatory affairs was being handled by pentascope the company invited by el rufai and when pentascope mismanaged it, the company was sacked. Licences issued could be revoked any day. Government has the right to do so. Only glo and mtel ( owned by nitel anf fed govt) at that time were national carriers. They're not hooked to nitel's equipment like the licencees. On the nepa issue. It's still under the control of the govt. Only gencos and discos were issued licences to operate whilst the govt retains the regulatory and control powers. Discos licencees are companies owned by the likes of bola tinubu, abdulsalaam abubakar, patience Jonathan, etc. Licences can be revoked any day. I can go on and on. It was Jonathan who issued those licences, not atiku. Stop spreading falsehood. There are intelligent people in this forum so, mind what you say. Everyone can't be fooled. 7 Likes |

Those create avenues for mismanagement of resources, as well as fraud We all can see how useless any government run organization in Nigeria is. if i were president my first agenda is to quickly sell off NNPC, do you think kaduna, warri, and porthacourt refinreies will be the way they are if NNPC was a private corporation? or do you think billions of dollarz will be missing without anyone to be accountable for it? or all these dullards they are employing through backdoor will still be there? i work with one of the companies that were privatised and i believe the company would have been history by now, because it was on the verge of collapse due to serious mismanagement and fraud. 1 Like |

efighter:Eleme Petrochemical is one of the most profitable companies in Nigeria today with a 99% up time. Apart from paying tax, Nigerian govt also a percentage and lastly the Nigerian tax payers money oil money is not regularly being used for expensive and ineffective turn around maintenance. ALL the plastic that Nigeria uses is obtained from that company. If only the petroleum refineries were sold or dashed out, they won't be moribund and costing ýou to pay their salaries. Think for a moment the number of staff at the 3 refineries with regular fat pay, promotions and end of year bonuses fully paid. Government is not responsible enough to run business in Nigeria so let's save the stress. NLNG remains one of the best run govt asset and so because it's not operated by government. Tired of typing, would have given you more examples. Summary is history and record shows that Nigeria govt, cannot run business. 2 Likes |

Kwamecron: What does the common man benefit from these ventures in the first place? The government has no business doing business in a country as diverse and corrupt has Nigeria. NNPC is the most corrupt government firm in Nigeria, it is the single largest drain on our resources in Nigeria, billions of dollars are been stolen on yearly basis and the firm adds no value to the economy whatsoever. A country like Brazil has Petrobras, a fully privatized energy firm that is more efficient and more profitable than NNPC, what we have is a corruption incubator that takes millions of dollars for routine maintenance of refineries, yet we still import refine petroleum product to the tune of $8.2b per annum. Any serious government will fully privatize NNPC, Ajaokuta, and all other moribund industries 3 Likes |

The only issue I have with atiku's statement is the percentage remaining for the fg after nnpc is sold. Privitizing nnpc is the right move, but FG should Retain at least 40% stake. Look at the Nigerian breweries, and the NLNG, look at how competitive they are, earning huge sums every year, and contributing to the economy after they were sold. The NNPC would become very competitive, if the right hands come in by way of private investment. |
