Namzy: Please does it have, charging profile for Lithium batteries, and can you disable charging, and it will still function as UPS..? |

Namzy:Please urgently put the CC as a top priority your flooded batteries are in mortal danger with the charging algorithm of the Axpert. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Namzy(m): 8:31am On Nov 18, 2018 |
DUNKA:It's just missing equalization voltage. Funny enough at its max voltage of 29.2v on some hot days the batteries begin to boil and overflow making me reduce bulk voltage to 28.8v, and interesting is some models of same axpert [but with PF1 instead of PF 0.8] have an equalization function at same max 29.2v with setting for equalization time, timeout & Interval. I will be getting the fangpusun soon to use. I will be testing their bmv 700 ist before purchase though Also point of note these so called tubular batteries are mostly made in India at least the ones I've seen luminous, su kam, Eastman etc yet their inverters don't have an equalization function. Infact the max voltage of my bro Eastman hybrid inverter is 28.8+-1 and you can only select battery type with tubular battery type having the highest voltage above there is no option for user defined voltage unlike the Axpert where I can change my bulk and float at will. Yet these Indian manufacturers are confident giving warranty for many yrs. But I'm a believer of equalization so my batteries will definitely receive them |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Namzy(m): 8:42am On Nov 18, 2018 |
Dam5reey:Unfortunately no charging profile for lithium although I heard the 5kva models with some custom firmware can charge some lithium batteries unfortunately I have not seen such firmware for 3kva models. I have not seen any option to disable charging although since the manual insists you install a circuit breaker eg 25A for 3kva models you can simply turn off the circuit breaker and it stops charging while still delivering output. Meanwhile the manual states you can configure charge source priority and one of the options is only solar meaning even if there is power from utility it will only charge via solar. I have not tested this as the solar panels I bought has not been installed yet. I will test it and find out whether with that option even without solar panels installed whether it will still charge from available utility Download the manual it is well detailed and explains almost everything you need |

Namzy: Thank you very much, I have downloaded axpert manual, I not sure all the other maker will have the same software/firmware, So I need someone using it . |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Namzy(m): 4:22pm On Nov 18, 2018 |
Dam5reey:I can confirm if you put only solar setting under charger priority it will stop charging from utility even when utility is available and no solar panels connected. Meanwhile I downloaded several manuals over time and all are same [for pf 0.8] those newer models with pf1 have similar manual except now the included equalization setting although I don't think it's available in Nigeria because gennex and ipowerplus are pf 0.8. The only manual difference for pf 0.8 is for same equalization that is available for only 4kva and 5kva models although the ipower plus 5kva model my parents use dont have the equalization setting. So basically all pf 0.8 axpert use same manual minus the equalization setting that is available to some 4 or 5kva models. The issue of firmware is not discussed in the manual although you can change the firmware of the 5kva models as it is readily available. I am yet to see Firmware for models 3kva and below |

Please does anyone know where I can lay hands on a VARIAC type device here in naija? Basically, I want a device where I can turn a knob and output a variable AC voltage between 140v and 300v - I intend to use the device to calibrate AVRs and voltage protection devices. Many thanks |

Depending on the sun for electricity isn't for a place like Port Harcourt where it can rain all month long and when it's sunny it doesn't last for more than 3 hrs. 2 Likes |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by NiyiOmoIyunade(m): 7:26pm On Nov 19, 2018 |
To be truly off grid, you must oversize your PV array such that you make excess power on an average day and sufficient power to get by on a bad day. That is why you see people with a 10kw array when they could get by with 4kw on a good day. I must say though that the fact that it is raining does not mean your panels won't make power...... For me my target is to double my current 7.5kw array size or at least scale up by an additional 5kw - currently I can run two ACs 24/7 in addition to 600w of base loads on a good day and on the bad days only one AC - I will know I have arrived when I can run those two ACs 24/7 even on a bad weather day and still have spare capacity. nonoski: 2 Likes |

NiyiOmoIyunade: lemme get u . you mean, you can run 1 ac+600w load 24hrs on a bad day?. what if you have 3 or 4 consecutive bad days?. the issue about oversizing is that, if care is not taken, after a while it doesnt make much economic sense. i woud rather run my azy 8.5kva petrol gen the few times my batt dip to 48v, than pour in more funds in over sizing the array. cos after oversizing an array, you would stil need to increase your batt bank, on super bad days, i get abt 1kwh instead of the 5 to 7kwh i usualy get from my 1500w pane array 3 Likes |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by NiyiOmoIyunade(m): 10:03pm On Nov 19, 2018 |
Yes - although the 2 ACs are inverter ACs. I have 38kwh of battery storage (sized for ~3 days autonomy) - if my daily consumption is 15kwh and I manage to return 10kwh from the 7.56kw solar array (a very bad day), I could run up to 6 such bad days before lights out. On your average day, I generate anywhere between 22kwh to 32kwh depending - by midday I am in a clear energy surplus situation. The issue of whether to have a backup Gen or not is a matter of preference apart from the economics - I gave out my Gen about 4 months ago after 2 years of it just rusting away and the starter batteries dieing - infact the only use it saw was my neighbors borrowing it as a stop gap whenever their own Gens broke under constant (ab)use. The convenience and sanity of having 24/7 power on tap with no incremental running cost can truly not be quantified and above all the Madam is very happy and satisfied - I will start thinking about the economics if I reach/cross 12kw of panels and need more than 16pcs 200Ah batteries. I leave you with a picture of net instantaneous power generated (solar input less base loads and 1hp Inverter AC) on a sunny afternoon - not bad for a 7.56kw array - the good thing is that a 1hp inverter AC in Gen mode may be drawing less than 600w after running for some hours. earthrealm: 2 Likes

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Saipro(m): 5:47am On Nov 20, 2018 |
earthrealm:Yup, you're right. Sizing beyond 1.5x the required PV array is rarely economically profitable and at that point is a matter of affordability and convenience. Unless you live in a very remote area (pretty unlikely in Nigeria as most people with means won't go living up in the mountains nor inaccessible swamps). The true design of off-grid solar setups isn't to be totally independent of other power sources and most true off-grid installations have either/both of a wind, micro-HEP or gen-set/dynamo to either augment the solar or run on poor days. That is the economically viable way to go. In addition, it provides for a level of redundancy. |

dapsyra: Hmmm, Just saw this now, would have to do some more research into this. Think these calbs would need an external bms, something I'm no expert at now, while the battleborns have a built in bms and does all battery protection inside - over charge, over discharge, current limiting and so on. The prices of those calbs look appealing though i must say. Either way, my replacement pack MUST be LifePO4. We just spent about 350,000 naira on a 48v 200ah lead acid setup from naija and again, these batteries could not even make it up to a year. At this rate, it's best to pay that 700,000 once and get a 5-10 year battery, even if the capacity might be low or just adequate. Thanks for the tip bro, it's now down to EWT, BattleBorns and this Calb 1 Like |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Oga Niyi Solar isn't for Port Harcourt during the raining season. My 4.5kw panels rarely puts out 5kwh most of the time. Initially I tot the connection was faulty coz I did all the connections myself or the Outback Flexmax 80 was overrated. However on 3 or 4 occasions where there was Sunshine all throu the day I saw 16kwh on the CC with 4.2kwp and 78Ap. My saving grace is that in the part of PH I live in we have PHED lite at least 18hrs a day. My CC and inverter only kicks in when PHED in their usual madness goes off for 4-5days at times (on rare occasions). That's when it occurs to me that PH weather can't sustain a solar setup for more two days coz it can rain for 5 straight days with another 5 days of little sunshine. |

new hope for energy storage. https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-develop-liquid-that-sucks-up-sun-s-energy/amp Scientists Develop Liquid Fuel That Can Store The Sun's Energy For Up to 18 Years BY CARLY CASSELLA NOVEMBER 06, 2018 No matter how abundant or renewable, solar power has a thorn in its side. There is still no cheap and efficient long-term storage for the energy that it generates. The solar industry has been snagged on this branch for a while, but in the past year alone, a series of four papers has ushered in an intriguing new solution. Scientists in Sweden have developed a specialised fluid, called a solar thermal fuel, that can store energy from the sun for well over a decade. "A solar thermal fuel is like a rechargeable battery, but instead of electricity, you put sunlight in and get heat out, triggered on demand," Jeffrey Grossman, an engineer works with these materials at MIT explained to NBC News. The fluid is actually a molecule in liquid form that scientists from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden have been working on improving for over a year. This molecule is composed of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, and when it is hit by sunlight, it does something unusual: the bonds between its atoms are rearranged and it turns into an energised new version of itself, called an isomer. Like prey caught in a trap, energy from the sun is thus captured between the isomer's strong chemical bonds, and it stays there even when the molecule cools down to room temperature. When the energy is needed - say at nighttime, or during winter - the fluid is simply drawn through a catalyst that returns the molecule to its original form, releasing energy in the form of heat. "The energy in this isomer can now be stored for up to 18 years," says one of the team, nanomaterials scientist Kasper Moth-Poulsen from Chalmers University. "And when we come to extract the energy and use it, we get a warmth increase which is greater than we dared hope for." A prototype of the energy system, placed on the roof of a university building, has put the new fluid to the test, and according to the researchers, the results have caught the attention of numerous investors. (Chalmers University of Technology) The renewable, emissions-free energy device is made up of a concave reflector with a pipe in the centre, which tracks the Sun like a sort-of satellite dish. The system works in a circular manner. Pumping through transparent tubes, the fluid is heated up by the sunlight, turning the molecule norbornadiene into its heat-trapping isomer, quadricyclane. The fluid is then stored at room temperature with minimal energy loss. When the energy is needed, the fluid is filtered through a special catalyst that converts the molecules back to their original form, warming the liquid by 63 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit). The hope is that this warmth can be used for domestic heating systems, powering a building's water heater, dishwasher, clothes dryer and much more, before heading back to the roof once again. The researchers have put the fluid through this cycle more than 125 times, picking up heat and dropping it off without significant damage to the molecule. "We have made many crucial advances recently, and today we have an emissions-free energy system which works all year around," says Moth-Poulsen. After a series of rapid developments, the researchers claim their fluid can now hold 250 watt-hours of energy per kilogram, which is double the the energy capacity of Tesla's Powerwall batteries, according to the NBC. But there's still plenty of room for improvement. With the right manipulations, the researchers think they can get even more heat out of this system, at least 110 degrees Celsius (230 degrees Fahrenheit) more. "There is a lot left to do. We have just got the system to work. Now we need to ensure everything is optimally designed," says Moth-Poulsen. If all goes as planned, Moth-Poulsen thinks the technology could be available for commercial use within 10 years. 3 Likes |
