If your rent is more than 30% of your earnings then it is too much. I am a realtor and that's a professional advise.

How much do you advice?

me as a person,I won't take a rent I can't pay with my one month salary,
Taking a fresh rent is always easy but repaying after the first year is always very difficult, speaking from experience..

You are taking advice from people who don't live in Lagos.

You are on the right track my brother.

All the people saying 2 months blah blah don't spend 5 hours in traffic to and fro.

Someone was saying some built a house in ikorodu within 3 years.

You want to live in ikorodu and work on island ?

Especially when you have a job where you close around 8?

My brother enjoy your life.

How did you secure the apartment?

I need to move to Yaba this week.

My blood pressure is higher than my father's .

Can you imagine?

God no go let me dash up to 3 months of my annual salary give landlord. God forbid.
If I earn just 100k per month, I will stay in self-contain abeg.

Many of you enjoy life so much you find it easy to throw away what you should save for rainy days. What will you tell your kids in future if you can't meet their needs because you wasted money during your youth.

I saved 73% of what I earn for the past 5 years I plan to make money next year and save 90% of what I earn for the next 10 years after I expand my hustle.

To save money sweet die, once I look my account balance, hunger go disappear and my belle go dey sweet me.

I earn 100k in port Harcourt here.. We are 3 in number that collect apartment.. Annual spend 35k for rent.. To me as far as you are not married yet.. U don't need to spend too much on rent. If you want 2 have sex look for a guest house
At a point I thought like this. Then later I found myself moving from hotel to hotel. So uncomfortable, so unstable. You'll get to a point what you really need is not sex, u need an actual woman. Someone that u can spend days with in the comfort of a place u call ur house.
Going to spend 10k+ for hotel/night, you guys will need to eat, another 10k least. You'll be tired. If it is really sex u want, go to those joint olosho have rooms like bluemoon hotel in akwaibom

I would Kindly like to know how much your monthly expenses per month with 3 kids, because Schools in Festac is not a joke except you are sending your kids to Public schools. less than 70k is too small.

Because your Husband may probably be making more money than you think, Have you ever sat down to calculate every single expense, ONE BY ONE?

Good evening nairalanders, I earn 100k a month which amounts to 1.2 million per annum.
I just secured an apartment in yaba which cost 300k per year. I chose yaba because of its proximity to the island which is where i work.

I want to know if the rent costs too much for someone of my status.

Am I about to start living above my means? Advice needed.

You have said it all no job is secure in Nigeria especially when is not Government job u can get fire anytime but nobody pray for that my advice save as much u can and try to cut down ur expenses since u never marry 200-250k is good enough
dotun365:
No amount is too much for rent. Comfort can never be too expensive. I don't know what kind of apartment you are staying in for 300k in yaba to give any advise. But you should be mindful of the fact that Nigeria is a rough place and anything can happen at anytime so you want to build a good buffer in savings and investment and that could mean cutting down on comfort now.

I earn 194K and I don't even have a house, I squat with my uncle. I'm afraid of even spending the money. I used to sleep on the streets before with street kids.

now I don't want to leave my old lifestyle. only my dad knows I have a job. no one else knows.

renting a house is not worth it, you'll soon get lonely looking for who to marry and all that stuff.

You and those who liked your comment need psychological evaluation. Different complexes at play here. Lmao

Where in Yaba did you get a mini flat for N300k? Please don't tell me it includes agency fee, agreement, caution, etc.

You should think very well and ask questions before you pay up. It is practically IMPOSSIBLE to get a miniflat in Yaba for N300k. Ask your agent if that fee includes agency and agreement fees.

Averagely, a miniflat in Yaba goes for N350,000-500,000. When you add agreement and agency fee, it goes as high as N500k-600k.

I totally agree with you, safety and comfort goes together, like in my own case I was transferred to abuja recently, having spent over a decades in the east where my annual rent is less than 100, unfortunately due to proximity to my place of work, I had to consider picking a self contain , environment matters because choosing a place were I will live among the locals , couple with language barrier and security needs to be considered. I ended up renting a house inside the estate for 250 and the environment is secured, but those I left back in the east will think its expensive, funny enough I had to cut the price when telling my mum, because they are landlords in the west.

Looks more like jab talks for me. Hardly will you get a conducive accommodation in Lagos maintown less than 300k.

The house owners are more of demi demons and the government so irresponsible to end the housing menace.

AroOkigbo:
Your annual rent should not be more than your 2 months salary.
So you are already on the high side.
Again, the 3 months may still fly when you consider living near your place of work.

is the 300k inclusive of agency and other charges? if yes, that's ok. but i doubt the miniflat thing at that ridiculous price.
