Gaming is currently more productive than watching TV or sports, there are many professional gamers and due to how interactive gaming is, it's a good way to make friends online who can play with you.

In Nigeria we have few hard core gamers like what u describe, not close to what u have abroad, because;
No constant power
Gaming rigs (even consoles and games) are expensive to buy n build
Poverty will not allow us to be anti-social
Nerds and geeks are hard to come by here

Abroad its not hard to see boys who own 2 consoles (a ps4 & xbox even plus wii) then also own a pc and multiple screens. Internet is cheap light is constant, you can choose to lock yourselve out of the real world for days, forgetting that you actually have a life!
