I used to work in one private hospital. One night a guy came with his heavily pregnant wife. Wife was having obstructed labour. Husband begged doctor to do operation : money would come later. The doctor...my oga then...did the op. Up till today, husband has not dropped a single penny.

Keep in mind that government hospitals also rely on the revenue they generate in a year....

The reason why they rejected that patient was not because of demons and fallen angels...but because far too many patients are owing bills, and when it begins to affect the perfomance of the hospital...ie in dealing with overheads,providning some essential materials....you have to make a choice.

Treat people for free and go broke...or start being firm...and save money,and jobs.

So please, stop insulting us....especially as some of us use our salary to pay for patients...without expecting reimbursment. And we have dependents and families too.

The truth is, we need trillions of naira to guarantee good health care.

And before you insult the health workers, the problem is most hospitals are broke from treating patients free of charge. People come to hospital, get free treatment, and run away without paying .affects both private and public hospitals

Then there is the fact of late presentation. I do not know the child history, but it is possible the child would have died even if oxygen had been put on because it is too late.

And before anyone calls us health workers heartless.,some of us dip into our pockets and pay for these type of patients. I know. I used to be one of those medical staff who did that, and when it starts telling on your pocket....

Tracked by who. You will need another institution and with it another bureaucratic bottleneck with its attendant challenges just to do that. I think the first thing to do is to completely commercialise health care in Nigeria so that it can attract the much required investment.

Then to liberalise health insurance by taking it away from government control completely. For the rich and educated middle class it will be a straight forward procedure. For the poor and less informed it can be organised around the various cooperative contributory schemes you find run in markets, schools, shops, etc amongst traders, students and artisans, etc.

Then if the government wants to buy equity on the service side or customer welfare side, it can but its participation should strictly be that of a regulator. This will transfer responsibility to the public and will go a long way in creating awareness on the need to live a healthy life and moderate the number of dependents or offspring a typical family has.

Right now the government at all levels serve this false claim the medicare is free in some of its hospitals for some procedures but the truth is far from that. No government in the world can cater for 180 million people free of charge. Someone has to pay.

It's convenient to heap curses on doctors and hospitals but what people don't realize is that hospitals run on money. A lot of money. If you keep expecting hospitals to treat every patient before collecting money, the hospital will shut down in no time. Our people are fond of taking advantage of goodwill. Once they realize that hospitals are treating without collecting upfront, they will troop in for free treatment even if they have the money. I remember a post someone shared here about a doctor who attended to an emergency case in the middle of the night. The patient's family pleaded that they don't have any means of getting money at that time of the night and they will pay first thing in the morning. He eventually treated the patient without them paying a kobo and went off duty afterwards. The following day, he was called while asleep that the patient and his family fled from the hospital before dawn. Not only did he pay for the treatment, he was sacked from the private hospital.

Hospitals, like every other business needs money to keep themselves afloat. Expecting them to treat every patient that comes in without collecting a dime is a recipe for disaster in an already failing healthcare system.
