This man himself is wicked. You could give him 500 naira comfortably to go home and bury his child, but couldn't drop anything to save the child's life, despite seeing the child was dying. Typical wicked man mentality. Why couldn't you drop money for them to continue treatment on the child? IamJames: Then why are people blaming the staff there? Are they expected to drop their own money to pay for treatment? Many of these staff are also still being owed salary. Pharmacies I'm sure will not give anything free to treat anyone. It's a sad state of affairs in Nigerian hospitals, but its unfair to blame non executive staff who are also just there to earn their keep. If the drip was available, they would have used it. You can't expect a dr to continue treatment in Nigeria where there are no medicines and consumables available unless you buy them. It's not the way it is in sensible countries, but Nigerians are all in a bad situation. 1 Like |

grrr: So you expect the Drs and nurses to pay for your treatment because they swore an oath to save lives? Why dont you people fear God? They never took an oath to use their salary to save lives, they also are poor people who are probably still owing their house rent and school fees for their children. So where do you expect them to get money from to treat patients that come to them? Their oath is to treat patients with their skill/knowledge and do no harm. And not to use their own money to treat. Do you think Drs and their families don't fall sick too? Do you think they also receive free treatment from these hospitals? |

rapid101: How many Nigerians pay taxes? If not for the personal income tax which is automatically deducted from a person's salary and the taxes big companies are mandated to pay, I doubt if FIRS will be seeing up to N5m in taxes monthly. Which Nigerian will sit down and start calculating his earnings and acquisitions to deduct taxes from them? Who told you that healthcare is free in developed countries? Whoever told you that lied through his/her teeth. What they have is a detailed health insurance system. So it's the insurance company getting billed making it look like the treatment is free. What their healthcare personnel won't do is abandon an emergency situation because the patient does not have money or insurance but it happens. I watched a video of a US hospital where a woman was coughing and wheezing violently in their lobby. The nurses and orderlies kept walking past her, none bothered to check on her. She died shortly, all they did was carry her body to one side and business continued as usual. These countries you shame your country for also have their own flaws Let's be sincere with ourselves. Bad leadership aside, a lot of Nigerians are insincere and bad debtors. Most of them will be looking for ways to outsmart people and take advantage of them. Hospitals have been taught bitter lessons by people who will escape without settling their bills, they've decided to tighten their policy of no treatment without payment and I don't completely blame them for it sadly some poor people have to suffer the brunt. 1 Like |

Eyinjuege2: Now that's the problem there. This is a government funded hospital and they receive allocations, so the question is where do these allocations go to? If things are done right, one is expected to pay very little or nothing when you go to government hospitals for treatment. This is what the spy wanted to expose. |

Reference:health insurance is a scam, trust me, they will treat you like a second class citizen if you go to any government or private hospital with your health insurance card and will be given the cheapest drugs. just ask your HMO how much it pays each hospital per patient per year or per appointment, then ask the hospital the same question. |

IamJames: Allocations are used to run the hospital. Repairs, generators, pay staff, buy equipment etc. The chairs you sit on, the cards, papers they write in, everything they use there where do you think it comes from. Medical care isn't free, anywhere in the world. If you don't pay in the spot you've paid somehow prior to falling ill. NHIS is a scam. Tell the average Nigerian to pay 3k or 5k monthly " incase" he falls sick to get treatment he would tell you he would wait to be ill first instead of dashing his money out to insurance companies. If he doesn't fall sick he would definitely go to a hospital to try and get treatment for his 5k forgetting that another person might need 20k for treatment and they'll use 3 people's 5k and the sick persons 5k to make it up. We have no personal joy in this part of the world. |

It is a pity. What a country! What a country! I weep for my fellow country men and women who are hapless and helpless. Yesterday a middle aged man committed suicide by lying down on a train track in Kubua Abuja and he was crushed by train. He left a pathetic suicide note that he decided to end his life as he can no longer cater for his family. God, how did we get here? |

theoldpretender:Dont give excuses for the wicked act often committed by Nigeria health workers especially in GOVT hospitals. Sometimes I wonder why God allowed them to even read medicine in the first place because they have no atom of humanity in them.70% of death in govt hospitals is caused by outright wickedness and negligence.. I know money rules all things especially in the hospital but life can never be brought back after you guys allowed it to happened without even the slightest concern in the word. Do you know if one of those people that have died out the wickedness and negligence of health workers could have been the president of this country that will change things around for good or even be a scientist in the medical line that will discover and a ground breaking vicine for an ailment? ....lives means nothing to you guys because money rule the world. I have been to govt hospital even with my money, i see the way patient are treated by health worker in the worst dehumanizing way just because they are vulnerable and at you peoples mercy...God knows the number of courses that follows health workers in govt hospitals for their numerous atrocities. I used to Admire health but my experience with them at govt hospital leave nothing to be desired. You all need proper orientation on how to relate with patient both rich and poor. |

mediaNGR: Oga you were there it happened, all you did was to give him=N=500 for t fare to go bury his child, y couldn't you pay the bills, ok I forgot, you have only 500, y didn't u raise the money, make calls, do something, talk to the doctor if he isn't listening, start a fight, find the oxygen threaten to destroy it entirely. Whatever you would have done something than coming here to post this, you would have posted of your heroic deed and not complain, we are the problem of this country, see how you have pushed it back to the government owned hospital, you would have fought for the boy's life not carrying hidden camera upandan, ok u have posted it, what have you gained? Meeeeehn, redefine your calling, we have no value for human life. The least you would have done is to beat the doctor |

Re: The Moment A Couple Lost Their Child In A Government-Owned Hospital by Cheeryfeet: 10:44am On Dec 05, 2018 |
theoldpretender:well said sir, it's good seeing things from the other side too I appreciate. But I still think that we should have value for human life, no amount of money can be compared to a human life. The hospital should simply device a way of collecting bills owed them than refusing to treat patients for lack of cash especially government owned hospitals, even if it means Creating a debt recovery department, when the patients refuses to pay you can go to thier work place, businesses or homes to claim whatever you think could clear the bills pluss your expenses, there is no reason whatsoever to disregard a human life for want of money. |

dominique:Put money aside..Some doctors are agent of death. Now take a look at this scenario. Some years back, I and my sister on our way to work , picked up a young man that was a victim of a hit and run ..he was partially conscious at that time but was pleading profusely from the head..when we arrived at the hospital..both nurses and the doctor on duty had this non nonchalant attitude toward the whole scene. There was no sense of urgency from the doctor to quickly attend to the patient, rather he just walked down the stairs like he had nothing to do at the moment..even while we cry and shouted "emergency! emergency"....it took donkey time for the nurse to come out with a stretcher to bring him in and the first the thing the stupid and wicked doctor asked from us was N10,000 for registration/cons if not the young man will not be attended to..While my sister ran to the ATM to get the money for a stranger she does not know, the Doctor on the other hand whose profession is to save life was there looking at me while the young man bleeds to his death...To cut the story short..he was stabilized after we gave the hospital the money ...the young man's family was contacted and was relocated to LUTH..he spent 4 months in LUTH..because he had a head injury and his facial bone shifted...this same boy finally contacted us when got well,to thank us...there we learnt he and his brother are the only surviving children of his parents. He continued call and show his appreciation for a long time until we beg him that it is ok. ... Money or without money 80% of doctor and nurses in Nigerian hospital are agent of death to the plain poor and vulnerable people but they very nice and good doctors to the rich....their attitude toward poor patient is appalling and dat is what pisses me off. |

mediaNGR: First of all, the author is sick in his head! Why didnt he hlp the fellow since he was there and saw that they had no cash? After the death of the baby he decided to giv him N500. He is a bastard. Secondly, frm his story, it is obvious the doctor saw the patient and placed on oxygen. If the patient doesnt have money to pay for oxygen, what do u want the doctor to do? Run to oxygen plant and carry the oxygen on his head? It is nt the fault of the doctor that the relatives at that point were nt financially strong enuf to foot the bill which lead to the death of the patient. Every little tin u guys blame doctors and nurses like they are the reason there is poverty in the country Mstchewww |

allthingsgood: The doctors and nurses don't make the hospital policies. There are usually strict policies in most centres that require payment before service. Failure to adhere, most times attract strict penalties for the hospital staff. A major means of tackling such problem is having viable, active and client-friendly health insurance schemes in place. Of course, the general economic state has to be favourable also for health services to be available to most if not ALL individuals. What the reporter saw is unfortunately, a common occurrence which plays out EVERYDAY in different health centres across the Country. |
