Web Developers, Please Don't Make The Mistake I Made! by Kelvin30286063(m): 1:08pm On Dec 07, 2018
A few months ago, I got a call from a man who apparently said he saw some of the websites I developed and he liked them. He said he wants to develop a website for a college and I was immediately interested in the job. We spoke for days about his choose website and samples he has that I can work with. He gave me a particular website vcc.ca and said he wanted almost the same format. I checked the website and noticed that it has a whole lot of contents all linked together. It's so deep that you cannot completely get to the very end of the website. I bet it must have taken years to put all those contents together.
He also told me he has given the job to two other guys and they abandoned it after they have collected part payments so he will not pay me any advance until I am done with the job. Which I agreed cuz with the way he sounded, he just wanted the job done well. I was wrong!
Apparently after seeing all those contents, I knew that it will take a very patient and unresilient person to not abandon the website but I was determined to do the job.
I told him I'll take 100k which I know it's very low compared to the job but because he had been scammed before, I decided to not charge him too much.
He agreed and I started working on the site. He sent over 40 different pdf contents to me via email so I can fill them into the webs when I'm done developing it. I quickly develop the website within 2 weeks, I decided to develop it on WordPress since it's a content website.
I started editing and filling in the contents, hyperlinking everything together... It took me 2 months to complete finish that. When I was done, I asked me to check the website and he did. He commended my effort and told me he wanted me to change some things and add some things... I started working on his changes for another week.
When I finished, I told him to check and he did then asked me to make some other changes... I did. I noticed that he kept asking me to make changes on things I have done before... And even some changes he told me to make before. I felt like we are just going in a circle!
I told him to pay me some of the agreed fee since we are almost through with the world, he said he will pay 20k since we are not through. I agreed, I just needed him to commit something really.

The repeated changing of this and that went on for 2 weeks, until 2 days ago when I told him I'm done with the work. He said wow, I really tried. And my skill is commendable but he wants me to brush it up a little. That the logo looks blurry... I told him I used the logo he gave me and it was the quality of the logo he gave me. Then I told him I won't work on the website anymore until he has paid me for the work, after all, everything is done besides the logo.
He acted as if he didn't see the message but I'm sure he read it from his phone drop down.
I woke up yesterday to find out he has changed the login details of the website and the cpanel and everything and put the website on maintenance mode!
I was shocked so I immediately contacted him, he told him I couldn't give him the quality of website he wants and he has developed to take the job from me and give it to another person!
I couldn't believe it!..
I worked on this for 3 months and you were checking everyday... I'm still in shock.
Trust me guys, I developed one of the very best website anyone can find anywhere in the world for this man. I have been doing this for 11 years and I'm not a baby developer. Right now, I'm disappointed and sad cuz I don't even know how to react to this. I know I can hire an hacker to take down the website but I'm a good person.
So guys, what do you think I should do at this point?
The website is www.ecac.com.ng
His name is Abiodun Akinyele Peter
He is the owner of Emperor restaurant Lagos
His phone number is 08022618778

I have attached all our conversations to this post...

You're so at fault in all angles. How would you take on a large project like that without at least a 50 percentage upfront payment. And you say you've been doing this for 11 years. I doubt that.

This our kind of job needs deposits because you'll spend on it no matter how little. Human beings are not to be trusted. I've met clients that we've really talked everything through, and they ask for your account detail only to not hear from them again. So when you collect deposit, it will be difficult for them to abandon the project. And even if they do, the deposit will cover your cost and stress.

There's one I'm even working on right now. It's a multi-vendor e-commerce website. The client was impressed with my portfolio. So it didn't take much persuasion to agree on a price. We both agreed on 180k. But he told me that because of his expenses lately, he'll have to pay 30k per week till it is completed. And I won't hand over the project to him until the payment is complete.
So he already paid the first one. With this I really have nothing to loose.

So let's be wise with this. If a client is not willing to make deposits, then trust me he's not ready. Because when you complete it first, he'll sure find an excuse not to go on with it. He might tell you, "I don't think I'll do this anymore", or "I found a better developer" or "I don't think I'm ready yet" and all sorts of excuses.... I'm sure you've learnt your lessons

Trust me bro, I know what you're talking about. I have dealt with people like that before but I only made an exception of this man because he looks important. I searched his name and he is a chief, a well respected man in Lagos and all that. Didn't know he's an idiot.

Yes he paid 20k at some point but compared to the work, that was like paying a laborer 1k for completely building a house single-handedly

sorry bro.. sometimes it's better not to insist on a deposit to build trust and all so the only mistake I think you made was using his server (I'm assuming he had it set up already since it's not a new project) for his inspection and monitoring.. that's a no no.. learnt that from the scratch..
I've encountered clients that refuse to pay any deposit but would expect me to upload the work on their own server to 'check out/see what I've done', I refuse and send my own link to them, they grumble but check it out, change some things and eventually approve.. when it's time to pay I don't hear from them again.. time wasted truly but no knowledge is lost, also the codes are reusable for someone else's project - that's what happens most of the time..
Always use a free hosting service provider like 000webhost and co for all testing and 'inspections'.

Trust me guys, I developed one of the very best website anyone can find anywhere in the world for this man.

After going through https://cloud.zealnut.com, I honestly want to doubt your statement of "best website"... But we all have our different skill level... so, peace, out...

And point of note: Calling him names on this platform will do you no good nor help resolve any part of the issue. If you feel offended, you know where his office location his, visit it.
Re: Web Developers, Please Don't Make The Mistake I Made! by BitsMaster: 9:28pm On Dec 07, 2018
Some clients are found of doing that to outsmart Web Developers. That's how a guy asked me to build a website for him some months ago. He told me he had given the job to two Developers but they refused to do it after collecting his money. So when I asked him to deposit, he said he wouldn't until I completed half of the job. When I built the website at 80% level, I asked him to pay but he started telling stories. He asked me to come to VI and promised to pay my T-fare so that he we could discuss more on the web. Convinced by his request, I went to meet him at his office only for him to continue story-telling. The funniest thing was that he deleted all our WhatsApp chats when I kept asking him to pay me. Infuriated by that action, I just went strait to the website and took it down. He kept calling me back, I didn't give him audience till date. Programmers should be very smart.

I don't remember calling him names... But I am not surprised, you are probably one of those people that only glance through long articles. If you down my skills, I doubt your education level too cuz the work is 'is' not 'his'
And what is wrong with my portfolio website? Can I see yours? maybe I can learn from you. Since you're an island of knowledge. Olodo
Since you want me to peace out... You should (Bleep off) my post.

Seem you guys are out to demonize clients
How about developers that would collect 50% deposit and would not develop anything or do a poor job ?
I suffered that in the hands of 2 web developers in this same webmaster section
since then I started dealing with fiverr freelancers, that way they only get paid for services delivered

Just like BitsMaster said, mention them and how it went with them so that others will not fall victim.

You made a mistake of not collecting atleast 45% of the project budget and i believe you have learnt the hard way. i used to be like that before but at this point i have a lot of jobs (mostly freelancing website) so i a client can't pay me atleast 60% of the agreed fee we cancel the deal because i can't leave soneone's work and attend to another person that hasn't made payment. he should delete all your content if he is not happy with your work, if he can't he is a scammer

We couldn't proceed based on this "Do it first and then I will pay"

it's disheartening for him to put you through that stress

The time is relative to the cost and how much efforts yyou put. It can range from 1 month to a year, depending oon your location. The cost also depends oon your location.
But for you tto start making money you'll need more efforts, creating connection
