Got it. Having someone in Calgary to help with your landing is totally understandable. From there you can position yourself to take opportunities as they present themselves.

I am one of those people who are biased in citing Ontario as the place to be when it comes to IT. True, Toronto is a heck of a busy place to live in with the fast pace of life like one would find in any commercial hub anywhere these days. Thing is, it is very competitive in terms of IT jobs and this is unmatched by few places in the country except, say, Montreal.

Another place in the province that is growing as an IT hub is the Kitchener-Waterloo region. It doesn't have as many opportunities as Toronto but it is steadily growing its clout. The plus side is that it is still offers a calmer pace of life unlike Toronto. [s]Also with all the schools in the region babes full ground[/s]

I myself do not care much for big cities and their bustle, I generally stay away from Toronto ...except on the weekends when it is time for owambe grin For me living in the K-W region is like the best of both worlds, enjoy a calm city life and when it's time to switch it up the 6ix is just an hour away.

No one is even talking about New Brunswick.

I know few people who had moved there but had to return to Ontario. Cost of Housing is cheap but jobs are scarce according to them.

Fort McMurray is a city of about 80,000 people. It’s basically an oil city with lots of money going around. True to the fact that they do a lot of drugs here, it’s only a matter of choice for you to decide if you will join them or not. I landed in Fort McMurray from Nigeria some few years back and I can boldly tell you I never regretted it. Though it’s a work town with little side attractions, but you can be sure of making good money and can afford to take your family for nice vacations within and outside Canada if you want. Even a Janitor will make at least $50k minimal. I first worked as security when I landed and was going home with $4k in a month after tax which is on a 7 days on 7 days off basis. My intention was to get a white collar job sitting in front of a computer but as God will have it I now work as an heavy equipment operator which is sweet, you just don’t want to imagine what an HEO takes home bi-weekly. I lost all I ever had including my certificates and travel doc in 2016 wild fire(the beast) except for the cloths I put on for work and my car that fateful day. The most painful part was that then I was renting and as a Nigerian didn’t see getting a property insurance as something important. I would have been at least $100k richer if I have had that $25 monthly insurance for my property. My dear a lot have really gone by but thank God in less than a year after I lost everything, I bought my own house to the glory of God. When you come here there are lots of opportunities you just have to be flexible and discover what works in the city you live in. God will help you.

This stereotype reminds me of Port Harcourt. People outside think the residents are swimming in oil money.

Nice, I appreciate your advice, however, at the stage, I feel that is the only medium I can use to get my PR. Dont worry about the pay, if I can survive in Naija with pay of 60k, I believe I should be able to cope, or what amount of hourly wage can one live on comfortably in CA?

Hello Everyone,
So i just got PPR and planning to move in April 2019.
This is my scenario and i think i can make do with advises and suggestions as much as practicable.
I am travelling unaccompanied. Hubby is school in London. And he wont be available for a long time.

1. My plan is to do a soft landing about 1-2weeks with my kids 6yrs and 2yrs. And return home with them(leave them at my parents place).
Then leave finally the later part of next year say Sept or Oct 2019.
Hoping that i can settle properly by a years time say Sept 2020. By which time the little one will be 4 years and can start school for free and the older one will be 8 years and can help around.

2.My brother thinks i should leave in Jan 2019, look for a job and believes i can turn things around quickly, pick them by June 2019(medicals expire in Aug 2019) and that should be it. Then again, the question of handling two kids alone comes to play. Am told child care is very expensive. Am a clinical person and may need to work shifts. How do i manage that?

3. Seniors who have had similar experiences please share. I need to plan well. Planning on landing in Calgary too
Advises are please welcomed
Thank you.

My reply is based on your second option.

It's not going to be easy but doable. Your level of strenght and access to funds will go a long way in determining how well you are going to cope. .. I have seen some women handle it while others can't. The women that usually handle it well have husband sending them money from abroad or family wiring money to them. This money supplements whatever amount they earn in Calgary.

You also have to think of the possiblity of being able to get a good job before June when you intend to pick up your kids. You mentioned being in the clinical field. What type of clinical are you talking about here? Will you need to evaluate your qualifications? Note that getting a healthcare survival job in Calgary is not a walk in the park. It is competitive, and might require you to also have an HCA certificate.

Daycare cost in Calgary for low income family when subsidized may still cost circa $900 per month for 2 kids. Most daycare close at 5 or 6pm, and if your shift goes late into the night, a babysitter or dayhome might be able to fill in the gap. To make enough money to pay for total child care, rent, bills, feeding etc without funds from other sources, it will be best that your job be fulltime (atleast 37hrs per week) or part time with high $/hr.

Let's hope others also share their experience.

Hello bro, sometimes we might begin to look beyond our passion depending on the circumstances we find ourselves. I know that IT field is also very profitable if you can get into a very good organization or get a job with the government.
There are other short courses or programs you can do, that will impact positively in your career. In my city, engineering is hot cake but you know the reason you don’t want to continue in that field which I respect.
Hello pls what city are you am an electrical engineer and still confused on where to settle and I want to continue my electrical engineering

My reply is based on your second option.

Many thanks @ salford
My fear of option two is based on expiry of the medicals.
Am a clinical dietitian and it’s a long winding road ranging from various assessments to examinations to possible internships before I can practice. That aside, something close to it which doesn’t require a lisence is Dietary Technician or Aide and from the vacancies I have seen, mostly go on shifts.

That said, the struggle is real but my thinking is if the kids have assess to free education, twill be easier to handle them than paying for daycare plus after school hrs. And they are more likely to reason well when they are a bit older.

Am giving myself this Dec to think and put plans down and try and figure the best route to go based on advises too.
I really appreciate this.
Thank you.
