xG is a measure of the chance conceded by a team and expected goals conceded from those chances to measure how leaky the defence is

It shows that Liverpools expected conceded goals reduced significantly before VVD joined Liverpool once TAA Gomez and Robertson became a main part of the starting 11

xG's value is that it gives an indication of whether a team's results are based on sustainable factors like the consistent creation or denial of chances, or whether it is down to less sustainable factors like freakishly high chance conversion or sensational goalkeeping.


xG can be thought of as effectively evaluating "chances", whereas "shots on goal" does not discriminate between a 35-yard sighter and a missed open goal from close range.

I get what you're saying Raumdeuter but the suspicious stats you quoted from that unscrupulous source aren't even backing your claims.

The stats that article provided are for two periods- the first was for when Liverpool had yet to buy VVD (the first 9 games of last season), and the other was for the remaining 29 games, which surely must contain games in which VVD played and didn't play. Definitely, it's totally bogus.

If you disagree with the simple and straightforward stats Nihilist quoted from Whoscored, provide stats of Liverpool's defence from the beginning of last season to when VVD was bought, stats for the rest of the season (after VVD was bought), and stats for this season so far.

Just provide the stats to prove your point. Don't bring another article from another dusty corner of the internet.

So far, VVD is, for the most part, responsible for Liverpool's improved defence, and stats from Whoscored proved it.
